GA GA - Two AWOL Afghan soldiers (one found), Moody AFB, Valdosta, 7 Dec 2015

Uhm...could someone tell them their plan didn't work?

With respect, Afghan trainees are certainly not the only people on bases all over the country to go AWOL -- and though the bases know that it will happen, it is a difficult problem to control, seeing as trainees are not inmates.

OT-ish: I had a friend who went AWOL in Hawaii and showed up a year later in Oregon. He managed to get off an island without being caught!

I understand, but they shouldn't be touting they had a plan in place in case it did happen when it is obvious the plan didn't work. (It was a tongue-in-cheek comment from me anyway. My sarcasm icon must not have been showing. LOL)

Just a thought and I apologize if it's already been mentioned. If the two are planning something here wouldn't they already have contacts here? Possibly with the money, a place to stay and transportation. Maybe also weapons. I hope I'm wrong but considering that the 9/11 terrorists were never suspected before the attack it still worries me. As for the ones in SB, FBI knew that the male was contacting a known terrorist online and they never did anything.

Great questions, SweetG!

I think it is the part of not knowing the answers that concerns some...myself included.

You are absolutely correct, and they certainly could have contacts already here since they have been at Moody for sometime now. If our government hadn't made so many blunders/errors/ineptness in recent years about Islamic terrorists, I may be more comfortable in assuming these two want to live here. I am not sure now that anyone was ever properly vetted coming into our country. And look at the dismal failure rate TSA continues to do? I really don't think any of these government agencies have protected us. Many of these so called protective government agencies have really sucked in the past few years. IMO

But if true and they plan to live here how do they expect to do that? Wouldn't they have to work somewhere to make a living? I doubt they were loaded with cash unless someone was sending it during their time at Moody. I did read an article yesterday about those coming into our country and how they can get any kind of (fake) paperwork/documents they need that looks very authentic for only around 1K.

So if that is their plan then how are they going to live? Wherever they went they had to take some type of transportation themselves unless someone was waiting for them at the gate or at another undisclosed place in Valdosta. Did someone agree to hide them out? Just questions I have on my own.

Going AWOL brings about great shame for those doing so. It may even lead to charges if they are found and they can even be dishonorably discharged. I am sure they had to take some kind of oath like our own military here does and was expected to follow the military code of ethics and honor their contract until they graduated. I wonder how their own military looks at AWOL? If found and returned will they also face hardships there? Just more questions I have.

I am sure the investigators are looking at all camera footage in the area. They probably already know what time they left base and what day. If it was Saturday morning that is a lot of time to travel far away before they learned they didn't report for duty on Monday morning.

To be a military aircraft mechanic one has to have a government security clearance. Some are high levels of security. Most in the military who are pilots know they are the ones who stand on the shoulders of giants and that is their mechanics/flight crew. They know if they don't have extremely competent, trustworthy, and ethical aircraft mechanics that makes sure the aircraft is mechanically safe to fly then the pilots and crew members' lives could be in great peril.

If there is one thing I have learned since ISIS and other Islamic extremists have declared war on the infidels (the western world) and that is they are very patient terrorists. When reading about the ones the FBI have been able to stop just in 2015 alone showed that many of them had hid in plain sight for years.... some even for decades. Some had even become citizens and came here in the early 90s. Yet many years or decades later they were caught plotting and planning to do terrorists attacks on our own soil against us. Its really creepy to know how long some are willing to wait before they plan to carryout terrorists attacks. But you know the FBI cant stop them all nor track them all down.

I really want to believe these two guys only want to stay here but until we know that was the motive for certain it leaves an uneasiness due to the Islamic terrorists who are right here on our soil already per the FBI. I don't want these two falling through the cracks. Maybe if found and they want to become citizens here then maybe there will be someway for them to do so. It looks like if that had been the case though they would have contacted the government for assistance.

I'm not so sure that could happen now. After the Ft. Hood mass shooting security has become tighter than ever on military bases. So getting weapons on to the base (sight unseen) which would be able to shoot massive amount of victims in short order is very unlikely now. IMO

And here in Colorado Springs, one of the trails my husband and I like to walk our dogs, is called The Santa Fe Trail, which Used to go through part of the Air Force Academy, up until May of this year.

Snipped By Me...

"Santa Fe Trail to remain closed through Air Force Academy."

"...USAFA remains on threat level Bravo, which it has been since May when it was specifically identified as a potential target for a terrorist attack."

Homeland Security: Visas revoked for missing Afghan airmen

"You've got a variety of electronic information, physical information that when people travel, they leave clues," said Bryan Cox of the Department of Homeland Security.

The U.S. State Department on Friday revoked the missing men's visas, giving DHS and agents at the Atlanta field office the green light to take over the search from the Air Force.
...
"There's no specific information that I have leading me to believe that these individuals are of any particular threat."
...
DHS said that at this point, authorities have no reason to believe that foul play was involved in the missing airmen's disappearance.

Listening to hearings in Congress since Dec. 2, 2015, these two airmen with revoked visas will just be added to the pile of revoked visas that DHS already has stacked up in their offices.

As I understand it, they aren't airmen. They are plane mechanics. I may be wrong.

I can't believe they haven't found them yet either, and I can't believe we haven't gotten any kind of update. They were briefly mentioned when their class graduated, but other than that - as far as I can google - there's been zero actual updates.

Afghan trainees still missing

Bryan Cox, spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Monday the two are not in custody and the search is continuing. In a prepared statement, Moody officials stressed “the men do not pose any apparent threat.”

The men were screened prior to their arrival in the U.S. more than a year ago and have trained alongside Americans since February, according to Moody AFB.

Several media outlets have released images and names obtained from Facebook posts.
[snip]

Moody Air Force Base personnel have not verified the images and have told The Valdosta Daily Times the U.S. Air Force has a policy in place to not release any identifying information of any Afghan trainees, citing security concerns. The Times has taken an editorial position the images should be officially released.

There will be no updates because the government does not acknowledge terrorism, from the top down. Nor will they release a list of people from Muslim majority nations that we've lost track of after they have entered the US.

IMO if there are no more updates it's because the two trainees met with some dangerous locals.

I guess they didn't meet with "dangerous locals," and all that specialized training, room and board was a waste. Your tax dollars at work!
