Why do you guys think Jose Ibarra chose a bench trial over a jury trial?
That’s pretty interesting to me, and I think it’s a good learning experience to watch a bench trial so the public can compare/contrast that with a jury trial.

I think his lawyers believe that trial by judge is likely a better option given the attention that this case has garnered nationally over the last few months and the likely impact on the public and, hence, on jury members. A judge is less likely to be swayed by this kind of media attention.

On Friday, the man charged with her murder will have a bench trial before a judge in Clarke County Superior Court. Bench trial verdicts are decided by a judge and not a jury.
Jose Antonio Ibarra, the 26-year-old suspect, requested the bench trial. Jury selection was just a day away when it was announced in court on Tuesday that Ibarra had waived his right to a jury trial and would submit himself the decision of Judge Patrick Haggard.

In the nine months since Laken Riley was killed while jogging at the University of Georgia, her death turned into a lightning rod over crime and illegal immigration and cast an ominous shadow over the college town of Athens.
Data from the smartwatch Riley was wearing will show that her encounter with Ibarra “was long,” and “fierce,” said Ross. Riley placed a 9-1-1 call at 9:11 a.m. and her heart stopped at 9:28 a.m., with no more movement from her watch, the prosecutor said.

Right.
Circumstantial? With DNA and fingerprints and her blood on his clothes and his blood on her clothes(blood was on somebody’s clothes) and and and.
I’ve watched the first three hours+ of the trial and this feels like another case that should never have gone to trial.
At least the defense isn’t claiming a vast conspiracy by LE or something similar.

He is so vile. His expression looks like he thinks everyone is stupid.
My thoughts on the bench trial is that there is less emotion. He knows he is guilty and he only has one person to see how guilty he is.

I watched opening statements today. Haven’t closely followed this case, so I was stunned by the amount of evidence they have, particularly the video portion. Thank God for technology.
A jury would convict him so fast, no one would have time to leave the courtroom for lunch and come back. So will the Judge, IMO.

In their opening statement, the defense casually said it was just a circumstantial case, which it clearly isn’t.
I thought it was strange that the only cross examination in the three hours I saw, was to of one of her roommates. Following up on a question the prosecution asked about the clothes Laken wore running, the defense wanted to know if she ever took off layers of her clothes when she was running, specifically, “the layer between her bra and her jacket”…..her shirt. Why would they ask that!? Are they going for a blame the victim defense in some way? I certainly hope not!

I just started watching yesterdays testimony this morning. What a bright light Laken was and she had so much to offer this world. Learning this piece of trash had nearly 20 minutes to change his mind and just walk away is especially difficult.
