FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the suspicious deaths of two women in Rome.

The women were found underneath the Etowah Bridge on Wednesday by workers near Gizzard Park.

Floyd County Chief Deputy Coroner Connie Chandler confirmed the identities as: 19-year-old Vanita “Vera” Richardson, and 30-year-old Clarice Truvenia “Bean” Campbell.

The women’s bodies were “apparently dropped over the (Etowah) bridge,” GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brian Johnston told the Rome News-Tribune.

911 calls from the people who found the bodies said that they had bags over their heads and that their clothing was tattered.

A scanner traffic report indicated that the sisters were found with plastic bags over their heads and shotgun shells beside their bodies, although authorities haven’t confirmed the information.

Report: Woman struck juvenile with a golf club


A 30-year old Rome woman was arrested over the weekend on charges of 1st-degree cruelty to children and battery.

According to the arrest warrants, Truvenia Clarece Campbell struck a juvenile on the right arm with a golf club causing substantial bruising and swelling.

The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday of last week at Campbell’s residence on Porter Street.

The warrants did not list the age of the juvenile

It’s a fairly nice area. Typical large town outside a major city. Mostly safe but a few areas that I would not walk alone at night. I can’t think of a violent crime like this recently here. This was on a road that kind of by-passes the town. Fairly well travelled.

“The deaths of two stepsisters whose bodies were found beneath a Georgia bridge were ruled homicides, authorities said Thursday.

Vanita Richardson, 19, and Trevena Clarece Campbell, 31, were found dead Wednesday under the Etowah Bridge in Rome, a city northwest of Atlanta, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.”

“Once the crime scene was processed, Rome-Floyd firefighters helped investigators get the women’s bodies up to the bridge.

“We used a 70-foot aerial ladder with a four-to-one haul system with a Stokes basket to hoist the victims up over the side of the bridge and get them in the care of the coroner,” Battalion Chief Brad Beall told the paper.

Richardson was a graduating senior at Armuchee High School. According to Floyd County Schools officials, she was set to graduate next Saturday.”

I also live in Rome and I have to disagree what the other person said, Rome is not a safe town. While in some rich folks neighborhoods might be safe the majority of Rome is not a safe place, especially downtown. It’s really sad because as a child Rome was a safe place, you didn’t have to worry about your safety, you could leave doors unlocked.

Interesting that they think the car could be in Atlanta. From the dump site if you continue straight till you hit the red light you can go left and hit Cartersville and go to Atlanta from there so it’s possible the killer or killers were headed back to Atlanta. It would also explain why they were dumped there because anybody here would know that road is heavily traveled and not an ideal spot to dump bodies because you could be seen.

A preliminary autopsy ruled the women's deaths were homicides, but Joe Montgomery, the GBI Special Agent In Charge in Calhoun, would not disclose any other details about the causes of their deaths.

He said it is possible there are at least two killers who attacked Campbell and Richardson.

Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Brian Johnston says the GBI is working around the clock to develop and follow different leads.

Johnston told Channel 2 anchor Justin Wilfon that agents believe the women knew their killer and it’s not a random act of violence

Montogmery said investigators are still working on the timeline as to where Campbell and Richardson were last, and how they ended up where they were killed, how they were killed, why they were killed, "and then taken to where they were finally dumped so tragically," he said.

Investigators say it’s possible they were killed some time after 10:30 Tuesday night, and they want to figure out who was with them that night or into early Wednesday morning.
