UPDATED | Body found Friday identified as missing Jefferson man
JEFFERSON — An inquiry into the death of a 28-year-old Jefferson man missing since mid-November is still in the early stages, Ashtabula County Sheriff William Johnson said Tuesday.
Village police, however, have followed "hundreds" of leads since they began searching for Garrick Sowry in January, Chief Dave Wassie said.
"We've been investigating quite a number of people," he said. "We have a lot more contacts to make, yet. Until such time that we actually have a cause of death, we're going to keep investigating it."
County sheriff's investigators, following a tip, found Sowry's body Friday evening in a pond adjacent to an uninhabited home along Tompkins Road in Lenox Township.
County Deputy Coroner Tom Despenes said Tuesday investigators used fingerprints to confirm the body was Sowry's and his death is being investigated as a homicide. The office has yet to rule on the cause of death. Despenes said on-scene Friday that Sowry had been dead for some time.
Johnson wouldn't say how the body was discovered or by whom, as the investigation remains active.
"We're still waiting for some of the evidence to come back," he said. "Now we've identified him, so we're going to start on the investigation and figuring out why he was there, who he might have been with and what happened."
Despenes said Tuesday that a toxicology report will be part of the autopsy and his office is waiting for the results.
