An unidentified, ( in line with German privacy laws) elderly man will face trial for the murders of 170,000 people at the Birkenau death camp of Auschwitz concentration camp during WW2, it was announced today.

Authorities in North-Rhine Westphalia had last week been deciding whether the man - a member of the SS Death's Head Guard Battalion who guarded arriving cattle wagons and people awaiting selection on the ramp at Auschwitz 1 - should be charged. He was also posted at the death camp satellite of Auschwitz, Birkenau, from January 1943 to June 1944.

'Defense attorney Johannes Salmen says his client has acknowledged being at Auschwitz I, but denies being assigned to Birkenau or being involved in killings.'

A 94-year-old former Auschwitz guard has been convicted of being an accessory to the murder of at least 170,000 people, at the end of what is likely to be one of Germany's last Holocaust trials.

Reinhold Hanning was sentenced to five years' jail for facilitating the slaughter at the death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, having served at Auschwitz during the Second World War between January 1942 and June 1944. He had faced a maximum sentence of 15 years.
