Germany - Car Plows into Christmas Market in Magdeburg, Multiple Dead/Injured

At least 11 people dead - reports

At least 11 people have died following the attack at the Christmas market, the German newspaper Bild reports.

This says he is 50 years old and a doctor from Saudi Arabia

A doctor of all people, someone who has spent years of training and working to save lives ending up taking lives in a terrorist attack, what the hell is going on these days

Too many of these attacks, they seem to happen on an almost annual basis, surely it is time authorities put up concrete bollards in areas where markets are taking place with not enough gaps to fit a car through or hold them in sports stadiums/arenas etc where a car could not make a difference

Apparently, many do.

Many Christmas markets, including the one on Breitscheid Platz in Berlin which was the target of the attack in 2016, have installed extra security including traffic bollards, in an attempt to prevent it from happening again.

HOLY SHUCKS!!!!!!

I just saw this video….he rammed through the ENTIRE LENGTH of people???????

A doctor. What does that even mean anymore, when someone feels they are “called” to do this by their religion? (I speculate on the reason due to what has happened so frequently).

I swear I almost skipped this thread because a car running down people at a German Christmas market was, I thought, something from last year.

Fox News is saying there were “barricades,” but as of now they’re uncertain as to what type of barricades.

Clearly they didn’t work.

Looks like a horrible potentially terrorist incident in Germany tonight

The death toll keeps rising it - according to Daily Mail 11 now confirmed dead including a toddler

Yet another heartbreaking reminder of the growing despair and unrest in the world. It’s chilling to see that there’s multiple bright and talented people in high profile cases right now, throwing their lives away in a moment of destruction. It feels like we’re slipping towards a dystopia, that people have less hope and are acting on that lack of hope for the future. I wonder if our global system is pushing people to their breaking point.

How do we create a world where people feel that their lives are worth living, and one where people don’t feel so hopeless to throw their lives away on these acts of violence?

All MOO.

Bbm.
This ! ^^^^^

Early reports are saying more than one fatality (one is bad enough !), but not surprising.
The car looked like it was speeding excessively.
So sad at an outdoor festival where people were starting Christmas celebrations and buying gifts for loved ones and maybe having a hot cocoa and cookie snack.
Sickening if this was intentional and not a car malfunction.
The driver appeared to keep going so prob. intentional ?
Omo.

Sorry @MassGuy I didn’t see your thread so created one - they’ve been merged now.

This is why I’ll never go to Christmas markets anymore (I haven’t for about 5 years) in the world we live in today I just don’t feel they are safe.

My thoughts are with the deceased families and my prayers are with those injured

From my country's MSM:

"According to 'Die Welt',
he is from Saudi Arabia, born in 1974.
He was supposed to rent a car shortly before the attack.
He previously worked as a doctor and was not known to the services.
Luggage was found on the passenger seat."

RIP to the victims :(

Not just a doctor, he was a PSYCHIATRIST (talk about a lack of self-awareness) and according to the Daily Mail and other sources, there was also a suspected explosive device in the car.

I'm not sure where the 11 confirmed dead is coming from? I live in Germany and everywhere I've checked says 2 confirmed dead including a toddler. Except maybe Bild but Bild is gutter press, and I can't access it anyway.

The death toll may well rise because so many people are injured, unfortunately.

After seeing the video and the way the car literally ploughed through so many people I'm expecting double figure deaths. It will be a miracle if not. However, seeing the reports of an explosive device in the car, the dead and injured could have been much higher. Thankfully it didn't go off. Horrific non the less and awful just days away from Christmas :(

As a side note, I noted after the rise of such attacks my local Christmas Markets (UK) installed huge concrete barriers, narrowed the walk ways and increased police presence. I hope any further markets held in the next few days will take extra precautions
