This is from my local newspaper: Vermisster Fabian ist tot - Erneute Spurensuche am Fundort

There are 6 photos all of which, except the final one of candles outside a church, are from today.
The police thought they'd finished searching the area around the little pond, but decided to go back. They're not disclosing reasons for that atm so as not to jeopardise their investigation. They also said they will be remaining tight-lipped.

Another article from today Güstrow: Ermittlungen zum Tod Fabians – Tümpel wird abgepumpt
with a little 50-second film, some of it may not be from today, I'm not sure.

The articles shouldn't be paywalled. Sometimes articles from this newspaper do get paywalled but usually only if you read regularly, and then it tends to be local news, which Güstrow and area is not.

They pumped a lot of water out of the pond today - you can see that in the photos - to make their search easier. They also chopped a bunch of bushes and small trees down near the pond for the same reason.

The parents of murdered Fabian (8) were supposed to take a last look at their dead child at the forensic medicine department to identify their beloved boy.

What, excuse me, but that is not how identification of people is supposed to be done anymore 1) to spare the family from more trauma and 2) because people don't always get an identification right, even of a loved-one. Authorities should have to use something like DNA anyway. Even rapid DNA technology is available.

(Of course if a family really wants the closure of seeing their loved-one, that's different.)

It wasn't a random person who found Fabian's body. It was Fabian's father's ex-girlfriend.

That's quite a coincidence! But it could just be a coincidence.

To answer my own question about whether the ex-gf lived near Upsahl....I saw a reference to an RTL article that mentioned that she lived 15 km away. ....so it is even more coincidental now that she was the one who found him.

I am trying to find the direct RTL link.

I did find this quote though:

In an RTL interview, Dorina L. wonders why the woman who had been with her child's father for four years found the dead eight-year-old in the woods. "I can't imagine she was just walking there by chance—why there? She has a forest right on her doorstep," says Fabian's mother. "Something's not right."

Fabians (†8) Mutter meldet sich nach brisanter Enthüllung

Further to the above and from the same link, the ex-gf said the following:

"I don't understand why I'm the focus now," she says. "Fabian was like my own child. I was his foster mother, so to speak, for four years."

I could understand the 'coincidence' if she was a minor player in Fabian's life and if she lived in the immediate area. But....I guess stranger things have happened?

ETA: and the ex-gf just split with Fabian's dad in August, so pretty recent. Brisante Enthüllung! Ausgerechnet SIE fand Fabians (†8) Leiche

OK, I've been mulling this over and I think about why the ex-gf happened to be out for a walk in the area where Fabian's body was found. One other possibility (among others) is that her friend wanted her with them when they walked to that specific area.

From what I can see and understand, this area is not an area where many people from outside the area come to walk.

Here's a view of the area.

This isn't a place you just stumble across. IMO.

It's a quote from Bild, may or may not be true that the parents were meant to identify the remains by looking at them. The general facts in a Bild article are probably correct but it's not one of Germany's quality newspapers...
IMO and many other people's opinion too.

Actually as far as I remember they were going to use DNA to identify him.
Yes, it's in that article, first para: "Eine DNA-Analyse der am Dienstag bei Klein Upahl gefundenen Kinderleiche hatte ergeben, dass es sich um den Achtjährigen handelt..." ( Translated into English by me: A DNA analysis done on the child's corpse, which was found on Tuesday near Klein Upahl, showed that it is the 8 year old...)

Thank you, seaside. I'm glad they used DNA and will take the rest as Bild's "opinion" (I am also a bit familiar with Bild and not a fan at all.) JMO.

Sounds like there is a potential vehicle that LE is interested in, according to this BILD article.

Shortly thereafter, the woman was approached by a police officer. "He wanted to know if I had seen a pickup truck with a trailer," she told the BILD reporter. The car was said to have driven along the road that runs directly through the village of Klein Upahl, population 330, toward the fields.

What role did a pickup truck play in Fabian's murder?

Because there would be so few vehicles that would drive in toward that pond, I'm guessing that any vehicle would stand out.
