If they are on the actual Traumpfad here, count me out. I'd take the low road anytime.

On some positive notes:

First, JF wasn't found here, despite the new and detailed search, let's assume that he isn't there, and whatever happened to him, did not happen on the most risky part of the trail.

Second, if het lost his cap, it is hard to see how he would have lost it on this trail for someone else to find.

So let's assume that the cap and JF are still together.

I wonder if the hospitals in the wider region have been alerted? and if JF was used to hiking and drinking beer during the hike before he started on the Traunpfad?
Thinking heatstroke here, a heatstroke that made him dizzy and disoriented so he went in a different direction.

Why do you find it hard to imagine? Maybe he clipped it on his pants or bag and it came loose and he didn't notice.

Search for Canadian Jeff Freiheit - Update Sunday, August 19, 10am:

Even though the official search for Jeff Freedom was temporarily suspended on Friday evening, volunteers are still out on the trail looking for the Canadian who went missing on August 2. Search teams have been formed via the Facebook group "Volunteers searching for Jeff Freiheit".

Two weeks ago, a young Canadian went missing. His trail is lost at the Brauneck. The Wolfratshausen company Air Bavarian GbR organized a private helicopter search flight today. A camera drone is also used. Currently the helicopter is in the air at Vorderriß.

Birkarspitze, Fuchs- and Klausgraben are taken under the magnifying glass. Others were on the north side of the Schrödlstein. Help was provided on Saturday by the Wolfratshausen company Air Bavarian GbR, who organised a private helicopter search flight. A camera drone was also used.

At the moment, a team of six persons from Benediktbeuern is heading towards Tutzinger Hütte.

The weather was sunny all over, he should have been wearing that cap to protect his brain. As an experienced hiker, he knew that. If not, chances of a heatstroke are UP.

Didn't he have two caps with him? I thought I read that ...

That's right Elainera, one was black - the other white. Same writing on each of them IIRC.

ETA: They are both in pics on his IG Jeffrey David (@freiheit3434) • Instagram photos and videos

They say "Ernie Freiheit Construction Dauphin, Man"

What is your point? There is no evidence whatsoever that he lost his cap, only a suggestion. And I do not think that it is likely.

I am referring to the cap that he was seen wearing in his last video. This cap would have been seen the next day in Jachenau. Given the circumstance I do not think it is likely that JF lost it on that narrow track. Because he should have been wearing it as protection, and he was seen wearing it, and next, the trail is so narrow that chances are high that something that is lost, falls into the abyss next to it. Also, but this is personal, if the cap was lost and if it was still on the path and if it was found by someone, would this male person have put an unknown, worn cap on his own head? Yuck!

That person still has to come forward btw. Until he does, I do not think JF lost his cap.

All this is IMHO.

Thanks for clarifying ZaZara. Gotta love Hanlon's Razor.

IF Jeff lost one hat, may time tell but noting there shouldn't be anyone else in all of Europe with either of those caps.

Just trying to help. lol.

Let's be excellent to each other eh!

What is your point?

The point I was trying to make (not very clearly though) was that he could have worn one and lost one since he had two caps. Sorry for the confusion.

MSM video from from Friday Aug 17 with Jeff's wife and mom (English subtitles if you click on "UT" in lower right of video).

Video "Wanderer aus Kanada in den Alpen vermisst" - BRISANT

Jeff was looking forward to his hike across the Bendiktenwand to end up at the Tutzinger Hutte. They are pretty certain he had lunch at the Tolzer Hutte (nearby last Instagram post). His wife tried to reach him that afternoon but was unsuccessful (MOO I think he would still have been in cell range). Local LE says they've searched meticulously but you would have to look under every tree and bush.

That other guy's razor, I may hope! Whatsisname... Ockham.

That last video on Instagram has me worried. If I understand it well, JF chose to walk to the Brauneck, instead of taking the sky tram. Sky tram is there for a reason! "For the ascent the Brauneck cable car is a real relief, because with the high trail to the Benediktenwand we still have a demanding path ahead of us that will challenge our condition."

To me, JF looks like he is overdoing it with first not taking the sky tram and second finishing in one hour ten minutes for a two-hour climb. Maybe this was his usual look after exercise but I wonder if he got enough protection from the sun, and enoughs fluids to stay hydrated. And if he drank water before he drank beer.
Temperatures in the area (Bad Tölz) were 30 - 33 degrees C at the beginning of August. It would cool a few degrees once he got up the mountains, but still he would have started at 30 -33 degrees.

I have been reading trail descriptions and there appear to be various points where JF might have taken another route or even a different direction.

Von Lenggries zur Benediktenwand
Shortly after the summit of the Latschenkopf the path to the Benediktenwand splits. Since the variant over the back of the Achselköpfe requires absolute surefootedness and freedom from vertigo, we choose the simpler route. We therefore follow the sign "Benediktenwand-Tutzinger Hütte-Längental-Arzbach" to the lower right.
From here the path is marked with a red dot and leads us underneath the steeply towering rock faces of the Achselköpfe.
On this way there are two possibilities to descend to the right down to the Probst-Alm, Längental-Alm and Arzbach - but we stay on the path towards "Benewand". Shortly before the Rotohrsattel the two variants meet again.
From the Sattel we continue on the Benediktenwand circular trail Ostaufstieg towards the summit. This path is now secured in places with wire ropes and requires our full concentration once again.
If this climb seems too dangerous, you have the possibility to hike over the Tutzinger Hütte to the summit.

If JF lost his cap and someone found it, I do hope this person comes forward to tell where he found it.

Would William of Ockham say he has fallen???

FB post & photo regarding yesterday's (Saturday 18th) private air search from Isar-Loisachbote (local German newspaper). Just putting their link on our radar in case they might be inclined to post additional information this weekend.

Would William of Ockham say he has fallen???

Probably, since we're in the mountains....

I guess that is a reluctant yes, and I don't like it. They did a very thorough search of the riskiest part of the trail, and he wasn't found.

Would Ockham say he wasn't found because he wasn't there? and in a different location when he fell?

I have followed cases here where "thorough" searches were done and later the person was found just there where they had searched. So idk. This is very very difficult terrain to search, I don't know how thorough it can be searched without putting searchers in danger.

OTOH Germans are really thorough in everything they do, if they say they searched thoroughly I tend to believe them.

They were abseiling into the abyss, looking for an adult male with a backpack, and they managed to find an object as small as a bath slipper in the dense undergrowth. Pretty thorough IMHO.

But still.....

I wonder about JF's phone movements, what was the last location where it pinged? And did they check the hospitals? Would love to ask @ksand but he has not been back, and no notice of verification.

Missing Manitoba hiker's family pleads for help
In the absence of answers, the Freiheit family is holding onto hope that their brother and son, 32-year-old Jeffrey Freiheit is alive, and could possibly be lost in the Alps, and be found soon.

“We won’t give up. And we’re doing whatever it takes. Today, my mom hired a private helicopter,” said Amanda Devigne, Freiheit’s younger sister.
On Friday, Devigne and her father visited the offices of Winnipeg MPs Jim Carr and MaryAnn Mihychuk and also sent a letter to the Prime Minister’s office asking for the Canadian Armed Forces to be involved with the search to bring Freiheit home. Devigne said office staff at both MPs’ offices told them the information has reached Ottawa and the Prime Minister’s office.

Probably unrealistic, no idea if it has been tried before, but would it be possible for a plane or air balloon to fly around the area with a banner advertising that JF is missing and showing his photo?
If he is stuck somewhere and sees it, he will know people are looking for him and give him hope when he may need it most and to bring awareness and attention to his case.
