If he had empathy for anyone INSIDE his family, I would think it was his daughter and that’s it. He brought her into “his world” as far as his business and the only reason he probably wanted to see her do well is because he sees her as an extension of himself since she is his only biological child. The simple and sad answer is that he (and other men like this) just hate women. They see us as objects for their pleasure - whatever that looks like to them - and they don't see us as complex human beings. The fact that he targeted sex workers also makes me think he thought poorly of them and maybe saw them as less of a "loss" because of their line of work. Its extremely depressing.
ETA: anybody capable of these crimes also is likely to be a psychopath and just completely lack empathy, especially for those outside their families.
I bet the relationship with his wife deteriorated over the years into more of a roommate situation rather than a loving marriage. He probably controlled all the finances and hid a lot of their money troubles from her. He seemed to be out of the house all hours of the day and night and she probably never questioned it because she was conditioned not to or just didn’t care anymore. She traveled a lot without him. It’s surprising sometimes how two people that live under the same roof can live vastly separate lives. I bet she became a shell of the person she was when they first met.
