Suffolk County, New York, authorities on Friday identified a Gilgo Beachmurder victim known as “Fire Island Jane Doe” as Karen Vergata, an escort who went missing on Valentine’s Day in 1996

Suffolk County, New York, authorities are expected to identify a Gilgo Beach murder victim that has gone nameless in the over decade-long case, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The source said authorities in a press conference Friday morning will name Jane Doe No. 7, whose remains were found in 2011 along a beachfront parkway during the expansive Gilgo Beach investigative search and later linked to remains first found on nearby Fire Island in 1996.

View attachment 438993Karen Vergata, 34 years old, although this must be a much younger pic. Looks like highschool? In the 70s?
Looks like they got her nose pretty well, looking at the recon. It's long and prominent. Her actual nose flares more at the bottom, but that's soft tissue, so a lot of it is guesswork. As for the browline, with that long fringe covering her eyebrows in the school photo, it's impossible to tell how close the artist got. We'd need another photo, but I have a feeling that if they had another of her as an adult they would have used it. Maybe not, though. Her adult photos may be mugshots, and today, it was right to use a photo that humanised, not degraded, her.

I didn't expect this. I expected a superseding indictment for the murder of MBB or an identification of another victim but did not think it would be Fire Island Jane Doe from 1997, 27 years ago. This is really good imo. It demonstrates that they are really drilling down on all of the unsolved cases. They are on a mission!

Am I correct in remembering most victims were last seen on/about a holiday (or at least a noted US calendar day)? Labor Day, 4th of July, Valentine's Day, etc??
There's not necessarily anything sinister in that, people often see friends and family on holidays. But if it's a public holiday, it may also suggest time off work for a predator. (So Valentine's wouldn't count.)

Hoping "Peaches", her baby and "Cherries Doe" can all get identified soon as well! Wondering if the paper scraps found with Cherries came from a Bible? (hence, looking for a Bible in the search warrant)

That DoeNet page you linked says the paper was likely from a calendar, and had words and phrases in Spanish written on it. So, not likely a Bible. Perhaps from something like a day planner though? Those have calendars in them.

It really does give me hope that we are going to see IDs for ALL known victims in the near future. So many people are going to get to go home. I'm honestly in tears I'm so happy.

I know that LE was able to determine that RH's innocent wife was out of the country during the murders he's been charged with, but do we know if LE has determined all of the wife's trips? I'm thinking of an overlay between her known trips (which correspond to his vile opportunities) and known missing persons (specifically missing sex workers), there might be so illuminating (horrifying) overlap.

Karen Vergata was identified as Jane Doe No. 7 in the Gilgo Beach killings.
  • Remains found on April 11, 2011, along with the body of the woman dubbed “Peaches” was linked by DNA to a body that was found 15 years earlier on Fire Island. On April 20, 1996, skeletal remains of a young white female were discovered in Davis Park on Blue Point Beach. Two sets of remains, collectively known as “Jane Doe No. 7,” have been identified today, cops are expected to release details at a presser this afternoon.

Agree ^ they are totalling drilling down on getting all ID'd.
Getting these cases solved !

Seeing a dozen clever people on the steps declaring "their find" gives me confidence.

I can only imagine how many clever LE people are behind the scenes working on these cases now!

Gives me hope !
