Give Us This Day Our Daily Thread April 1st 2026
We are starting a new month. It's April Fool's Day. What happened on this day in history? According to AI, here is a short list. Be sure and read to the end of the list because I posted a terrifying A.I. story.
1778
– Oliver Pollock, a merchant in New Orleans, is often credited with popularizing the use of the dollar sign ($) in financial records.

1865 – Union troops capture Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy, during the American Civil War. This signals the imminent collapse of the Confederacy.

1933 – The Nazi government under Adolf Hitler organizes a nationwide boycott of Jewish businesses in Germany, an early major step in the persecution of Jews.

1945 – American forces land on Okinawa, beginning the Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II.

1957 – The BBC airs a famous April Fools’ Day hoax about spaghetti growing on trees, which many viewers believed.

1960 – The United States launches TIROS-1, the first successful weather satellite, changing how meteorologists track storms.

1976 – Apple Inc. is founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne.

1979 – Iran is officially declared an Islamic Republic following a national referendum, after the Iranian Revolution.

2001 – The Netherlands becomes the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.
This woman was arrested solely on the basis of A.I. matching her face. Here is a video and the longer story in People.

UGH @ AI horror stories first thing in the morning! Those that know me know I am NOT a fan of AI. Sure, it can be fun. Sure, it can do some good things. But when it gets into the hands of azzwipes that will use it for bad... that won't be good for mankind nor the planet. I have a healthy dose of fear of it. Not a fan. :(

In the mood of Prima Aprilis :D

"The veteran Cabinet member
- now cutting a wizened figure at 19 years of age -
acted decisively to eliminate the security threat operating in plain sight on the lawn outside No10.

😸

As his Cabinet colleagues laboured over paperwork
and sat through policy meetings just down the road on Whitehall,
the chief mouser showed the kind of get-up-and-go attitude
which has made him the cornerstone of countless Governments' pest-control policies.

Never one to dwell on a successful operation,
Larry quickly scampered off looking for more mice to take down."

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY THREAD THURSDAY APRIL 2ND 2026
Thank you for the laugh @Dotta. That story about the cat is so cute.
Gemma, I'm sorry about the terrifying A.I. story. I might have a few more but I will give you a heads up when I post one. LOL
From AI here is a list of what happened on April 2nd.

  • 1513 – Juan Ponce de León lands in Florida… and believes he might be near the Fountain of Youth. One of history’s most famous “this might make me immortal” moments.

  • 1792 – The U.S. officially creates its money system… but early coins were often hand-cut, uneven, and easy to counterfeit. Not exactly the polished dollar we think of today.

  • 1865 – As Richmond falls, Confederate officials set fires while fleeing, accidentally burning much of their own capital city to the ground. A chaotic self-inflicted disaster in the final days of the war.

  • 1912 – The RMS Titanic completes sea trials and is declared ready… despite warnings about speed and ice. Just 10 days later, it hits an iceberg.

  • 1932 – The tragic case of Charles Lindbergh Jr. takes a darker turn when his body is discovered. The case sparked massive media frenzy and changed how kidnappings were handled in the U.S.

  • 1956 – As the World Turns premieres… kicking off decades of dramatic plots, amnesia, secret twins, and soap opera chaos.

  • 1982 – Argentina invades the Falkland Islands, launching the Falklands War—a real-world conflict that escalated shockingly fast over a remote set of islands.

  • 2002 – Israeli forces surround Church of the Nativity, leading to a tense armed standoff inside one of Christianity’s holiest sites.

  • 2005 – The death of Pope John Paul II triggers one of the largest global mourning events ever—millions travel to pay respects.

  • 2014 – The Fort Hood shooting reminds the U.S. of the ongoing issue of violence within military bases, raising difficult questions about prevention and warning signs.
