GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY THREAD FEB 2nd 2026
Can you believe we are in Feb already? My apologies. I did not start the new thread yesterday. Between the two threads talking about the situation in Minnesota I pretty much lost my mind and have yet to find it.
It's GROUNDHOG DAY!
February 2 — Fun Facts
Groundhog Day didn’t start with groundhogs. In Europe, people used hedgehogs and badgers to predict the weather before German immigrants brought the tradition to the U.S.
The famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil has been making predictions since 1887, and folklore claims he’s the same groundhog every year.
Ulysses by James Joyce was first published on February 2 because it was Joyce’s birthday.
The Battle of Stalingrad, which ended on this day in 1943, is considered the bloodiest battle in human history by total casualties.
February 2 is also Candlemas, a Christian holiday marking the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
In ancient Rome, this date aligned with purification rituals meant to cleanse the city and prepare for spring.
Groundhog Day gained a huge pop-culture boost after the release of the movie Groundhog Day, which turned the date into a metaphor for repetition.
On February 2, 1990, South Africa took a major step toward ending apartheid when political bans were lifted, reshaping global history.
Weather lore says that if the day is sunny, winter will last longer — a belief older than the United States itself.

I know that there was a persistent rumour one of them had survived the crash for a short time and crawled away because he was found some distance from the wreckage. Many years later, the family actually had him exhumed and examined by a forensic pathologist of some repute, who was able to reassure them he had been killed instantly. I read his book.

It was actually Bill Bass who did the exhumation of the Big Bopper, if anyone is interested. I should have remembered that, but I read several books by forensic scientists at the same time, and I thought it might have been William Maples.

Good afternoon, everyone.
Busy day on Websleuths.
I have a question...do you speak a foreign language?
If so, would you mind if I added you to our "Verified Members" list as someone who speaks a foreign language?
It is rare, but sometimes we need a person to translate a media article or video.
I just started this today with our first member, SRWCF. She speaks Italian.
