This just published on the site of SkaiTV, one of the biggest TV channels in Greece. Τα άλυτα μυστικά: Πάλεψε για την ζωή της η βιολόγος στην Κρήτη

(Google translated, minor corrections by me)

The unresolved secrets: The biologist in Crete fought for her life

Pending first results from forensic laboratories, the Authorities continue the suspected admission of suspects

Suzanne Eaton resisted and fought vigorously to save herself from the hands of her murderer, who was reportedly believed to have "stabbed" her with some knives. An ELAS (police) official told Cretalive that there was a fight. It seems the perp was only able to "neutralize" her by using a knife. However, it is a great mystery about where this took place, how the perpetrator approached her and where it was originally conveyed to complete his brutal work, causing her suffocating death.

At this stage, the data and objective findings available to the competent authorities are very specific. A woman leaves the Orthodox Academy's premises at 2 pm (it says 2 pm here, I thought it was 3 ?) on 2 July for walking. Something similar had done the day before. The security cameras located outside the facility do not catch it, so they do not know exactly what direction it was moving in. They do not even know if Sue deviated her course and went somewhere in the fields to observe something.

As for the findings, the place where the corpse was found (which was scrutinized) is not the place of the crime. Additionally and importantly, they have the findings of the forensic scientists, expecting the first answers from forensic laboratories to have the first concrete evidence in their hands. Experienced officers are talking about an extremely difficult crime because valuable time was lost before reporting the disappearance, the body was in advanced sepsis, yet they still believe that the case will find the way to its discovery.

"There are many unresolved mysteries that we have to deal with and many working hypotheses," commented a police source. Experts try to frame the murderer's profile and search for suspects from the wider region, as it is firmly convinced that the man who grabbed, killed and unloaded Sue's body in the labyrinth of cave is a good acquaintance of the area. They do not, however, rule out a second offender, but this is also a working hypothesis.

Pending the first results from the Forensic Laboratories, the Authorities continue to continue the admission of either local or foreign residents living in the area and engaged in agricultural work.

For ELAS, it is crucial to create a "bank" of genetic material samples for the comparison and identification process. "Everything that moves in the area is being brought in" (he literally says "everything" not "everyone" in the Greek original, to stress that they're bringing in absolutely everybody) an investigating officer told Cretalive, knowing that the more the suspects circle (for obtaining genetic material, fingerprints, deposits, etc.), the more likely they are to reach the target their.

Great weight is given to (people with known criminal records and to the personal history of people brought in). Among other things, people who may have shown violent behavior in the past, have a psychiatric background or are described as "strange" on the basis of information arriving at the Authorities. At the same time as bringing people in, police officers are also looking for findings that may prove critical. For example, Authorities are looking for the knife used by the perp to stop the unlucky biologist when she reacted.

They may be looking for a rope and definitely a passenger car that is supposed to be transported from the point of killing to its tracing point. As Cretalive has written, the authorities consider it a more likely scenario that she was transported by car to the cave for practical reasons (it was easier for the perpetrator) and why there are findings that support this version.

Specifically, traces of passenger car wheels were detected, since the right and left branches of the route had been broken down to a low height. At the same time, the authorities "sweep" farmhouses, pens, suburbs in the wider region. They are looking for the crime scene, the place where the perp drove Suzanne before transferring to the cave.

At the same time, the family of the injured American do not hide their respect and appreciation for the police . As they have said, despite their crash and suffering, they keep track of developments, are informed by the leaders about the course of the investigations and show total confidence in the institutions.

If she was wearing her morning conference outfit when played the piano, and wore running shoes when she was found, that changes the time from 3PM playing piano, to 3:30PM after changing, 4PM if she showered.

Suppose she left her room at 4:30 PM to go for a run, but no one saw her after 3PM? Why not?
She could have left early, after a quick change. Or she changed and stayed in casual clothing for a while, in her room or went outside, but from a distance people didn't recognize her since she wasn't wearing the orange dress any more. Did other attendees/hotel staff notice her in her jogging outfit the previous day? What happened to the key to her room? Is it missing?

If they are local to the area, there's a good chance that the perp(s) will be found. Cell phone pings, DNA, tire tracks and probably more will give the answer.

Can you spot/guess the bunker location on this view of the area? It must be somewhere on the left half of the picture.
Google Maps

The inside and outside of the artificial cave look yellow on most photos, bec. of limestone. If you rotate the map the right way, this is what you get:

They may be looking for a rope

That's a new bit of information. Was she tied up? Maybe kidnapped while running, tied and put in a car, and killed at a more remote location.

That was my first guess too, but I wasn't sure since the reported distance from the road was 100m.

Depends which road they meant, the main asphalt road or the dirt road? The entrance could be located at the further left end of the yellow bit, that would make it ~100m from the main road. It's hard to locate the ventilation hole, as this video shows the hole to be semi-covered by trees, and the Google images are from 2014 anyway.

@Snoopster did you see my previous post? There was a link to the exact location on Google maps: Google Maps

I found it by visually checking the satellite map for road bridges since there aren't that many of them in Kolymbari. It's clear this is the same bridge seen on the video where you see the area that's been cordoned off by the police. That's as close as you can get to the actual spot, the Google vehicle didn't get any closer cause it's a farm and construction site.

@otto Greek islands are not unsafe for women to travel to for conferences or otherwise. I've frequently travelled to conferences there myself (both Crete and other islands) and I know many other women scientists who have travelled to the islands solo, for conferences and work.

Hi CityDancer!
Yes, I just checked it out. It is one I had "looked at", but had dismissed because the road drops instead of rises. In the crime scene videos you can see LE 'climbing' the early stages of the dirt road toward the gate. The terrain didn't look quite correct. And, if you look south, under the bridge the road doesn't take as noticeable a jog to the right as the crime scene videos show. I may be wrong but I don't think this is it, even though it's extremely close in looks. Perhaps it's just the angles of the google maps streetview that makes it look different?

I'm just heading out to work so can't link comparative images to show you what I mean. Maybe you and others can have a closer comparative look.

Thanks for sharing the google map link.

ETA: corrected...look south, not north.

Υou're welcome! Well, that is the only road bridge in the area, and it looks just like the one on the video. So all my money would be on that spot being the road right next to the crime scene, and the yellow bit of ground being the site of the cave. If anyone can come up with a better suggestion, please do. I have to go too, catch you later.

CBS this morning show did a story but I can’t copy it here yet - not really new but they did show the tunnel - I think she was deceased when they brought her to it (I think more than 1) JMO

If this was a random psycho, they wouldn't have a clue how accomplished she was. Academic background doesn't prevent you from being a

ETA: right. But sharing in case it WAS NOT a random psycho. Nothing is off the table and nowhere did I say academic background doesn’t make one a victim.

I’ve wondered the exact same thing. She could’ve even opened the door if someone knocked, and they rushed the door, giving her little time to react, especially if they had a weapon. I have no clue. Ugh.

That's a new bit of information. Was she tied up? Maybe kidnapped while running, tied and put in a car, and killed at a more remote location.

I have doubts that she was rushed by her room mainly because there hasn’t been signs of a struggle mentioned in her room ( since it seems she put up a fierce struggle) the door would of probably been unlocked or even open as he dragged her out, and given it was recess time, there was a high probability others were in their room to rest, call loved ones etc and would of seen or heard something.

According to the conference schedule, lunch/afternoon break started at 1pm and ended at 4:30. She could have been eating lunch between 1pm and 2pm. If she really skipped lunch altogether, did she have other plans involving a meal for the afternoon?

Reports on the time of death (that I've seen) aren't consistent. Some quote time after the last meal and others time after leaving the conference venue.
How to know how long after she left the conference venue that she was attacked and died? Evidence, such as food in her stomach, allows the time to be narrowed down. Digestion would stop after death obviously. I know this is not new news. But what isn't known is exactly when she last ate. Maybe she left the venue to eat if she missed the meal time there. She could have put on her running (walking) shoes and left to go eat somewhere. Any possibilities? She never made it or else someone would have seen her in a cafe or restaurant, if the case. All MOO

This article refers to Dr. Eaton taking a 'daily' run: Oakland native found dead during scientific conference in Greece

This article: "Authorities believe Eaton left her room to go for her daily run somewhere between 3-5 p.m. Her passport, phone and wallet were left in the room. The only item missing was her running shoes". Source: Suzanne Eaton: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com
It was stated the conference began June 30, meetings in the evening. If she arrived that day, would she have run? Maybe not if tired from travel. Or did she arrive a day or 2 ahead of this. It's been reported she ran the day before (July 1) and then on July 2 she ran (maybe) and was murdered. IMO daily run implies that it was her habit wherever she was to run for about 30 minutes each day, or at least to make the attempt.

I think I've got it.

Here's my google map identifying road entrance, bunker entrance (100m in from road) and highlighted general area where bunker hatch is likely located.
Dr Suzanne Eaton - Crete - Google My Maps

I based this on:
  • curve of the road going under the highway bridge and the scenery through the other side;
  • rising road in to bunker;
  • a likely looking spot 100m in for the bunker entrance;and,
  • a hunk of cement/rock, lying on the bridge buttress, that appears in both google maps and in the crime scene video here: @WADIBIG on Twitter
