Grocery shopping tips during Coronavirus quarantine

I was just telling husband last night. Most of those panic buying people ain’t ever gonna bake bread. They’ve never baked bread ever. They’re getting takeout.
( I worry about how much food will go to waste from that first week or so of panic buying )
(No offense meant to any legit yeast using bakers. I hear it’s being used for brewing also? Idk )

I have plenty, if you would like some. For some reason, I bought a giant package on Amazon a month or so ago. It is seriously, like a pound of dried yeast. Red Star. I wasn't paying attention when I bought.

Or, you can make Irish Soda Bread, start a new sourdough batch.

Imo I’d go with safety glasses.( I have some around here hmmm). A face visor needs a mask worn under it anyway.
( or that’s how I’ve seen it worn in a healthcare setting CDC should have a good info page for ppe specifics for specific situations )

I wonder if a DIY face shield would work for trips to the store?

My first thought was that they should wear a mask under the shield as well. But I wonder if this would still help for those who cannot get any masks or for when we eventually run out of disposable masks? My DH and I only have about half a dozen N95 masks we bought in the past for painting. So far I have been leaving my mask hanging up in the garage and reusing it only after 3 days or more have passed. But I was thinking eventually we will be forced to find a cloth mask or use a scarf and those might be less effective without something else like a face shield...

Hmmm. I will have to see if I can dig up my safety glasses for shooting. I have some wrap around motorcycle style sunglasses similar to this:

The last time I went to the store I wore those sunglasses with an N-95 mask, rubber gloves and a headscarf to cover my hair (wrapped similarly to the way Muslim women wear a hijab). Few people were wearing masks and everyone stared at me like I was an alien. I was thinking it might be the unusual headscarf, mask and the sunglasses combo, LOL. The sunglasses also reduced my vision in dimly lit corners of the store and the headscarf was way too warm to wear out in the summer-- I was roasting by the time I was done shopping! So I've been thinking about alternative head gear. Here's another, more fashionable, one I could easily make at home but I also question how effective it would be and how to clean it:

I'm on the hunt for Lysol wipes. My husband now all of a sudden wants one to put in his car. I gave him an extra spray bottle of Lysol kitchen cleaner and a roll of paper towels in the meantime.

I wasn't "panic" buying yeast. I was actually getting some special yeast to make dough with higher sugar content. I make cinnamon rolls for my husband. I just didn't realize that it was a giant block of yeast.

I am sure that you were not calling me out...just wanted to clarify. All good.

My elderly mother is one of those people, LOL. She bought a bag of wheat flour and she hasn't baked bread or anything from scratch in decades. She does know recipes for things like homemade noodles and biscuits that she could use it for, but she has bought mostly ready made products since her retirement. My mom told me she probably will end up giving the flour to a food bank or a neighbor that bakes, so it won't expire and go to waste. I think it was a reflex for many people to buy flour when the bread sold out. The thought process is they could make their own bread if they had to and they wouldn't starve. I ordered extra brown rice flour so I could bake gluten free more if I had to but so far my gluten free bread has stayed in stock in stores. Flour is also good for making pancakes, cookies, pie crust, etc.

I just checked Amazon, in December I bought the yeast for $4.49 the entire package 1 pound. Right now, it is $17. Wow.

Bringing over from another thread. Low carb cake in a cup.

2 Tbsp spoons of Almond flour
1 Tbsp spoon of cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon of baking powder
1 Tbsp Swerve - low carb sugar
Blend these, then mix together
1 Tbsp mayo
1 egg yolk
1 tsp water.

Let sit 1-2 mins, then microwave for 50 secs, it's very good!

Went to Petsmart for different flea meds for my furever buddies. Passed through a grocery store on the way home. Toilet paper. Yes. Yeast no. I went for baking powder bc my bananas need to be baked into bread. No powder. Cornstarch yes. Oil yes. Milk yes. Meat yes. Donuts? H E L L yes! I grabbed bear claws. Kolaches.

Ohhh, a bread machine! I still use my mom's old glass Pyrex Bake-A-Round Bread baking tube.

DH took a lunch break yesterday to go to Salvaggio's and got everything on our list. 3# boneless/skinless chicken breasts, 3# bag Halos, bananas and berries, fresh veggies, Kosher salt, half & half, Arborio rice, swordfish, and a large green pepper so I can make chili tonight. DH also got a beautiful bouquet of yellow spray roses to brighten up the kitchen Changes being made in the store, i.e. acrylic shields between cashiers/customers in checkout lanes, no self-serve bagels/croissants/rolls, etc. in bins, many customers and employees wearing gloves and masks.

DH will make a trip to Costco in the next couple of days. We always have a running Costco list and take advantage of monthly specials on products that we use all the time. We don't get much in the way of food at Costco because the packaging is more than two people require, but we do like health/beauty aids, cleaning supplies, and paper products for the convenience of not getting them too frequently. I also love my Perrier, so we get a couple of cases every month

Beginning April 3, members will only be allowed to bring one guest inside the store with them. Previously, Costco members could bring two guests per membership card, as well as their children.

The big-box chain explained the decision on its website, saying the move is designed to control the amount of people in the warehouse at one time.

At this time of year, we always have a bunch of tulips in the kitchen. There were no tulips yesterday, so DH got spray roses. Salvaggio's has a nice floral/gift department, and which ever one of us goes there for weekly grocery trip gets fresh flowers.
