Marijuana is HIGHLY illegal in Guatemala. It truly is considered an evil drug. Pot is so far from becoming legalized here, it just won't happen.

Yes, it is illegal, but I have to mention the area is a known hippie haven. If you are looking for a good time, you go there.
There isn't a fear of getting arrested for drinking, smoking a J or hitting the hookah into wee hours of the morning. Within reason. MOO

I did find some additional quotes regarding that situation though:

"The owner of the hostel where Miss Shaw was last seen claimed the young backpacker had given cookies laced with cannabis to guests.

The boss of Eco Hotel Mayachik claimed she herself had fallen ill and had nightmares and hallucinations after trying the biscuits.

The Austrian woman, who did not want to be named, said: ‘They came and put a box of cookies on the bar and said: “Everyone, have some.” I tasted two and an hour later, I was completely under [the influence of] drugs. I think these cookies had drugs in them.’

After the alleged incident the woman claims she told Miss Shaw to leave, adding: ‘I confronted her. She said: “It’s just love. It’s just nature.” The hotel has a strict no-drugs policy.’

The Lake area is a hippie haven and lots of drugs. Cops are easily paid off. It is a gorgeous place but too much weirdness there for me.

One has to be in a strange frame of mind to leave pot laced cookies at the bar of a hotel and tell everyone to have some without warning them that they are laced. Something just seems very off in this case.

Wow. That is 100% spot on.

I do think she subscribed to a unique metaphysical philosophy and spiritualism that not everyone would understand, IMO.

And she was recently in California and Mexico where marijuana is legal. The UK recently legalized medical marijuana in 2018.

Her stance on pot was : “It’s just love. It’s just nature.”

I can see how people would be upset by that, but there are plenty of people that embrace marijuana and detest big pharm and vice versa. /shrugs

Oh I know but I would be beyond pissed if someone fed me drugs without my consent. I had a friend whose supposed friends put LSD in her food. She ended up in the hospital and they were prosecuted. I am not against marijuana at all. I just want to make the choice for myself.

Exactly. I agree with you on this. And to provide it at the hostel to guests (and the owner of the hostel)? This could've put the owner in jeopardy- for breaking the law, for causing a bad reaction in a guest (lawsuit), possibly even someone under the influence becoming ill or getting into harm's way. . Not the best idea, I'd say. Not everyone shares the same idea of love and nature, and should be able to decide for themselves. JMO

Can someone please explain this to me? I thought, due to the cookie incident, she was asked by the manager to leave the hotel. However, she is seen several times on camera the morning she went missing. It’s easy to assume she was still a legitimate guest with a room. Something isn’t adding up.

I was reading this as Cat's traveling friend Elena was the one who supplied the cookies and was asked to leave. I don't think Cat was asked to leave.

I just went back and re-read the wording of the article that described the cookies incident.

"Her dog was found shivering and crying by tourists three days later at the top of the Indian Nose, overlooking Lake Atitlan.

The Austrian owner of Mayachik hotel, who did not want to be named, claimed the backpacker and a pal had handed out cookies with cannabis in them... The hotel owner said he had asked her to leave last Monday, following the incident."

Cops believe Brit backpacker was murdered on Guatemala volcano

The sentence describing the dog is referring to Cat as the owner of the dog. Then it goes on to say "the backpacker and a pal" had the cookies, which to me, seems to say Cat and a pal (presumably Elena is the pal) both had the cookies. In this article, the owner said he asked "her" (presumably Cat, the backpacker) to leave. I wonder if he also asked the pal (Elena) to leave, too.

A previous article said Elena checked out on Tuesday morning, which would make sense if the owner asked them to leave Monday night, for example, but gave them until Tuesday morning to find a new place to go.

(MOO!)

From the article, it seemed that both girls provided the cookies and Cat was specifically asked to leave but what time did she say that? Did that mean leave right now, putting them out on the street bc they were a duo or maybe the next morning, letting them crash there that night?
Did Cat sneak back to the room where they were staying with multiple other people (5 or 6?) hoping to not be spotted?
If they were spotted by staff, would they have really gotten in trouble? I don't know. I wonder what Elena would say went down, but at this stage of the juncture this aspect feels like a moot point, IMO.

Who is your hinky alarm directed at?

So interesting. Are there any drugs that are legal or decriminalized? Is there a big drinking scener, bars, etc? Thank you for your info. Having a local is so helpful.

I’m feeling the same way, mrs. Grueby.

Guatemala as a whole may take a stand on drugs largely due to the violence related to drug cartels, but the Lake Atitlan area is known for the party scene and is lax.
There are plenty of liquor stores all over Guatemala, and there are drunks passed out on the streets. It is an issue. MOO

I’m just curious if this story about Cat is accurate or not. I guess the point is moot, as it doesn’t change anything at this point. I’ll wait to hear who is arrested before I venture to share my own thoughts on this. MOO

Apologies if I missed this in previous articles, but she checked into the hostel the night before, on Sunday March 3. Where was she prior to that? In another local hostel? I know she had been to Mexico before Guatemala, but did she arrive in the Lake Atitlan area on March 3 or had she been in the area for some time? I'm just wondering about her familiarity with the area and how long she had been around for.

Another thing I just noticed is this article talks about her staying in a camper van, not a hostel. I'm confused about that.

"Lucie Blackman Trust chief executive Matthew Searle told the Sun Online that Catherine went missing overnight. He added: "She was staying in a camper van with a friend who raised the alarm when she woke in the morning, and saw she wasn't there. "Her belongings were all left in the van.""

Mystery as missing Brit is 'caught on CCTV leaving Guatemala hotel at 2am'

Is that just a factual mistake? All of the other articles talk about sharing a room inside the hostel with 5-6 other people, the hostel holding onto her belongings until Elena came back on Thursday and got them, the video of Cat and Elena inside, etc.
