It was also said that they are in the dining room part of the building and the standoff is not expected to end anytime soon.

Hello Floh,
They just said in a news report with a Sgt Kimberly Snyder(Capital Police Spokesperson)the the woman taken out and put in the ambulance was a result of a panic attack.

After all said and done it would appear it wasn't such an appalling event as many may have feared to to be (altho i don't mean to belittle the lady who had the panic attack).

it was good to see the authorities are well primed should something really devastating occur.

altho . . . altho . . . will there ever be anything as devastating as 9/11?

surely hope not.

thanks for all the updates everyone and just to say my cauliflower cheese for dinner was very nice indeed.

off for a nice cup of tea now. :)

It was said that it probably is not as serious as first thought. It was also speculated that it could be a surprise drill to test the response to a real scenario and to let terrorists know that emergency prepardness is followed by protocaland response is swift.

If this is the case, I think the authorities did an outstanding job in response.

Law-enforcement sources at the Capitol said Friday that suspected sounds gunshots heard in a House office building were made by a mechanic using a pneumatic hammer on an elevator, security expert Mike Brooks reported. Nevertheless, police were continuing a room-by-room search of the Rayburn building, where some members of the House have their offices.

That is the word that they used.I am as confused as you are.I think that it is an emergency prepardness drill.
The reporter used the word "standoff".

Cos the reporter was going stir crazy without informatiion and thought they'd throw that hat in as a chance remark which would make their name should the word 'standoff' come to pass?

news-by-the-minute-round-the-clock-competion produces this sort of stuff, IMO. :croc:

No the whole thing was not an exercise as far as I know. The last I talked to her she was heading down there to check it out. She does all that disaster/ emergency planning , drills etc.

Christine you are so very welcome, thanks for the post.:)

JBean was good about giving the explanation for the whole thing.
Congressman Jim Saxton apparently heard gunshots what he thought was gunshots (it was constuction workers) while in the elevator. He reported it and it went on from there.
