''An extensive search is underway in the area of Cannon and Ottawa streets after Hamilton police say a suspect may have fired at officers.

Staff Sgt. Catherine Lockley said officers will be in the area Saturday, going door-to-door, continuing the search for the male suspect.

Police were in the Barton Street East and Ottawa Street North area Friday night, responding to a call about a suspicious man.

When officers approached the suspect, they say, he fled and flashed a gun at police.

The suspect "is believed to have discharged several rounds in the direction of pursuing officers," police say.''

''The suspect is described as a white male, in his 20s, wearing all black, about five-foot-seven to five-foot-10, with a thicker build.

The man was wearing a blond wig at the time of the incident, police say.

Staff Sgt. Lockley said if anyone finds any items on their property that may be related to the search, do not touch it, instead call police immediately.

If you see the suspect, police ask that you immediately call 911.''

''Area residents were advised to take safety precautions as police continued to search for the man Saturday night.

"Please stay inside your home with doors locked (Saturday) evening, exterior lights on, don't open the door to anyone you don't know and if you see something suspicious please call us right away," said Mason.

Police are also asking residents to check their external cameras and call the east-end Staff Sgt. at 905-546-2963 if video of the man is found.

"We'd like to come and collect that video," Mason said.

The suspect is described as a white male, in his 20s, approximately five-foot-seven to five-foot-nine, with a thin build.

If anyone finds discarded items on their property that may be related to the search, do not touch them, instead contact police.

Anyone with information can contact Det. Mario Rizzo at 905-546-2918 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-522-8477.''
