Earlier today, DH received an email from our subdivision management company. The Board of Directors of our homeowner's association has apparently decided to have a subdivision-wide garage sale next weekend - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Homeowners wishing to participate are instructed to contact the neighbor who is hosting the event, contacting local media, purchasing balloons for homes participating, etc. WTF!!! A garage sale during a pandemic?

DH and I never participate and, quite frankly, we loathe garage sales. There's no way of knowing where "shoppers" come from, and we don't like having vehicles parked up and down the street with folks meandering through our lovely neighborhood. That our Board would sponsor a garage sale during a pandemic seems irresponsible. Yes, it will be outdoors, but people do tend to congregate on driveways and walk in and out of garages to view the wares. I rather doubt that everyone will wear a mask and practice social distancing. I don't know that a subdivision garage sale would necessarily be a "super spreader", but we will definitely keep our distance from neighbors who participate.

I'm curious about what fellow 'sleuthers think about this. Do you think it's a good idea to have a garage sale during the pandemic? Would you participate? I look forward to your thoughts on this.

Probably not the world's greatest idea. I don't have "garage sales", if I have stuff to get rid of I take it to Goodwill.

I usually call Purple Heart for home pickup. They call when they're going to be in the area, but I haven't heard from them in months. I always keep large trash bags and/or boxes with items to donate. I hope they'll resume pickups in the fall.

I love going to garage sales. But I wouldn't go to one now. I think it's a terrible idea. This is the weekend the Worlds Longest Yard Sale is held. They are still having it this year. I think that's a terrible idea too.

Our community hosted one several weeks ago and I felt the same exact way that you did. I'm not a garage/estate/lawn sale person either so I would not participate in a normal environment let alone now. Definitely think it is a bad idea.

I tried to take 2 bags of clothes to a local church that normally has a donation box outside, but the box was all taped shut with a note that they were not accepting donations at this time.

People have been doing that around here and I think they’re nuts.

Yikes. Handling money. Unknown people.
Kids touching everything.
Nope.

How do you social distance at a yard sale? Do you spray paint a do not cross line?

Our subdivision had their huge annual garage sale 2 weekends ago. Tonight there is at least one huge yard party, no social distancing, no masks.

We have ONE local thrift store who isn't requiring an appointment to drop off donations. They are bombarded! They have FIVE of those commercial truck bed/cargo thingies that people use for storage sheds in their back lot- FULL! upload_2020-8-7_21-24-23.jpeg

Bbbs actually comes From about 30-45 Minutes away (I think we’re about the furthest they go?) nobody local here picks up. Mayyyybe Salvation Army I’ve heard. Eh. Big brother does take books, toys (not always) and Small household so I’ve gotten rid of a ton of stuff. I have a dumpster coming this month. Sooo looking forward to that. How pathetic is my life lol :D

Thanks for your thoughts about a neighborhood garage sale. The last few times that there has been a subdivision-wide sale, very few homeowners participated - maybe 20 out of 108 homes. Still, this tends to generate a lot of traffic through the sub, usually starting the night before the first night of the sale. Potential shoppers drive through the neighborhood to see what kinds of items might be available while homeowners are setting up their sales. Once the sale starts, there is generally very heavy traffic first thing in the morning. We don't have sidewalks, so instead of walking up and down the street with moving cars and vehicles parked on both sides of the street, shoppers will traipse across lawns to get from one house to another. DH has already said that, if folks start walking on our lawn like they have in the past, he will turn on the sprinklers in the front yard zone as a deterrent :D

I'm kinda jealous. We need a dumpster in the worst way.

So I just came home from running some errands and a quick grocery stop for pie crusts that I forgot yesterday (chicken pot pies) my boyfriend requested, he is a better baker than I but he is working today so no homemade crusts and I came past a fast food restaurant hosting a Car Show. Ton's of people hanging out, lawn chairs in parking lot, people not wearing masks... Makes me shake my head and think we are going to be in this for a very long time.

This. Exactly. Our leaders really missed the boat on this :(

I don't know anything about pricing, but there are many dumpster-rental companies in these parts. Neighbors have rented dumpsters to get rid of "stuff" before moving.

A lot here too. My motivation isn't matching our need.

FYI, on renting a dumpster. The city will bring one to your house and pick it up, if you pay for garbage. In our city it was $100.

But, make sure you are ready. Because, you want it off your property by the end of the day. Otherwise, kids might go "dumpster diving" in there at night, and if they get hurt, there goes your homeowners insurance.

This was a sad lesson learned by some friends of mine.

i think a subdivision wide garage sale is irresponsible for so many reasons, most of which
have been mentioned already--think about this--in the time of a pandemic buying
stuff and taking it home--people's hands have been a!l over those items--- that is just
stupid-- i love sbopping for clothes but i wont go to my favorite stores cause i dont
want to touch clothes other peop!e have touched

I'm on the board of our 300+ homes HOA. We decided to forego our neighborhood garage sale this year. We're also trying to make people practice social distancing at our park, playground, swim area. It's not easy and people become a little over-confident, but we have to do it.

Our local public school system has decided to allow students to return to school if they wish and I fear its going to trigger a major outbreak in our city.
