The weirdness of it all.

I go to the store, mask, gloves. And see an acquaintance, she has no mask, no gloves. She tells me that she borrowed her daughter's car, and didn't have her masks.

So, was she being a "mask apologist"? Or? Another friend, thinks that this whole thing is some sort of media drama/frenzy. And tells me that I am "stupid" to buy into the drama.

Half the people I know are "maskers", the other half are not.

I don't know. But I will be on the side of caution.

A man actually attempted to ridicule my dear sweet sister-in-law (who is also a nurse) for wearing a mask in the grocery store. The ignorance of some is such a shame.

This is what she publicly posted about the incident on FB:

"A guy in the grocery store today asked me “isn’t that a bit much” about me wearing a mask. Don’t I watch the news? It’s a cold. I didn’t know what to say. It was so unexpected that I though he was talking about the dog food I had grabbed or my cart. I don’t get confronted for a reprimand in public on the regular. All I could say was, ‘I wear it to be sweet to others.’ I wish I had said, dude I’m a nurse. I’m wearing it to protect you and me and whoever I can. I’m just not sure I get why he felt the need to make me feel bad about trying to do something to protect others. Goodness people. Just be sweet. Kindness goes a lot further."

At the church on Saturday, they hosted a food bank distribution. You check in, they give you a number.

This one lady walks in without a mask. The sign clearly states in 3+ places that you are not to enter without a mask. She raises her voice and says to the check in lady “I have 2 reasons I can’t wear a mask. You can’t make me wear one.” Check in lady nods, quietly gets up, goes over to the head guy. Head Guy goes over to rude lady and tells her to leave the building. When it’s her turn, she can walk around to the other side of the building. They’ll hand her a food bag. She apparently thought the rules didn’t apply to her. She’s clearly miffed. Her friend who she was with, went outside to stand with her. I think they both missed their turn.

It’s not that I mean to discount whatever invisible ailment she suffered from. Other than her lack of gratitude. She wasn’t on oxygen either. She just thought she could waltz in there, make a spectacle of herself, spread her germs and everyone will bow to her. Nope.

A guy comes to the door. He stops just inside the threshold. He does not have a mask. He’s polite. Check in lady explains the rules and process for picking up food. He thanks her and waits outside.

A lady comes walking thru the parking lot as I’m leaving. The attendant asks her if she has a mask. She says no. She’s peeved too. Decides she’s going up to the line anyway. No doubt they set her straight too.

Mask issues stem from inconsistent, mixed messaging coming from local, state, and/or national officials. For some people, wearing a mask denotes weakness, and they don't want to be seen as weak, and those who do wear masks should be shamed. Sad that some people value appearances more than health and well-being

Exactly. Either everyone should be wearing a mask, to send a consistent message or? Well, the crux of this situation is really the mixed signals that we have received, even from Dr. Fauci. I believe that he stated that we didn't need to wear masks, and that they did not help, back in March.

You are absolutely correct: we in this country were told that masks didn't help-- so we believed that and didn't wear masks. Little did we know the underlying reason we were told this; it was because they were afraid that we the people would buy masks and that medical personnel would not be able to get them. When you think about it, that was really a very bad message from the "scientists" including Dr. Fauci-- that message set the stage - so when people were now told that masks were necessary to help prevent the spread of the virus people got confused and some said the heck with it. Then you have some people at the highest level of government who don't wear a mask, giving another message.
It comes down to using your common sense now. Ask yourself, even if the mask doesn't help the spread of disease, can it hurt? of course it can't.

After a 10-week hiatus due to the pandemic, I returned to physical therapy this morning (bursitis in right hip). There were three female patients, myself included, waiting for 11:00 appointments. Half of the usual seating in the lobby has been removed, and there are large Xs marking the floor for social distancing in front of the reception desk. Two of us went into the gym with our respective therapists, and the other woman went into an interview room for new patient evaluation. Masks are required, but they didn't take my temperature and only asked a few questions about my health, whether or not I'd been exposed to anyone with the virus and if I had traveled out of the country in the last few weeks.

The therapy gym is large, so patients and their therapists can be well-spaced. It is going to be very hot here today, and it seemed warm in the gym. I rode a recumbent bike for five minutes to warm up, and then I did a series of therapist-directed exercises/stretches. I thought I might have lost ground since I wasn't particularly diligent with exercises at home during the 10-week gap in treatment, but I actually did quite well. I will make sure that I do my stretches daily when I'm not going to therapy twice a week. Even though most of my treatment is stationary, it was difficult to exercise with a mask, and I had to remind myself to breathe. After each set of stretches, I lowered the mask and took a deep breath of fresh air. I wiped my hands with disinfectant wipes when I was finished with my therapist, and even though I was thirsty, I waited until I got in my car to have water from my own bottle.

It was nice to be out and have human contact other than DH. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 is a great schedule, and I can have that time slot as long as necessary.

Exercising with a mask is not easy. Hard to breathe properly with mouth and nose covered. I was afraid of getting dizzy and/or fainting

You know how the weather in Michigan goes Ten days ago, we needed to turn the furnace back on because the house got too cold with it off. It warmed up for a few days and then got cold again. We didn't want to turn the furnace on again and opted for the gas fireplace to generate some heat. We seem to have skipped spring and moved right into summer. It's been in the upper 80s and very humid for the fourth day in a row. A/C running throughout the day. I hope it's not going to be this hot all summer. I don't do well in extreme heat

Montana is the same. Heat on one day, AC the next day. It is supposed to be 90 this weekend.?

I was super hot and sweaty under my mask this weekend. I can't imagine wearing a mask in Vegas, Florida or any place that is hot and humid. I guess people will adapt.

While not a personal experience, I think this is something that we can all relate to. DH talked to one of his Ohio customers this morning. Restaurants in Ohio opened over the holiday weekend, and she and her husband went out to eat at their favorite place. The ambiance was apparently quite uncomfortable with diners spaced carefully, plexiglass partitions between booths, servers wearing masks, etc. They did not enjoy the dining out experience and will not return any time soon.

As much as DH and I would like to go out for an anniversary dinner next month, we won't go unless we know that Picano's (favorite Italian) takes absolutely every precaution to keep patrons safe without it becoming an unpleasant dining experience. We've been going to Picano's in Troy since they opened in January, 1985. We go there more than any other restaurant and have always had amazing food and service. They were not offering carryout until last week, so even if we're unable to have dinner there on our anniversary, maybe we will get takeout to enjoy at home.

I keep hearing media reports about how anxious people are to return to some normalcy in their lives, but I have a feeling that not everyone is willing to endanger their health by rushing into environments that might not be safe. Restaurants are high on my list of places to avoid, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Considering the great care and concern that people here have shown with their own grocery shopping and food preparation, I think we all know that keeping professional kitchens and dining rooms safe from virus contamination is going to be a major challenge. DH and I will not even consider going to a restaurant if we can't be certain that we will be safe.

Hi: recently our air conditioner went out so we had no choice but to get a repairman in our condo: when he got to our door he did not have a mask- i was ready for that and gave him a mask before he entered our condo. Both my husband and I wore masks. He was in our condo for 2 hours and i have to tell you i was freaking out because he had to vacuum the drain and then run the air -- i was concerned that if he had the virus the air conditioner would spread the virus around the house. That occurred on Thursday and it is now Tuesday. I was surprised he did not have a mask and i am glad i did and made him use it. Sometimes you just have to do the best you can and hope for the best. Chances of him having the virus is low in my opinion, but of course he could haVe had it: when you let a repairman in your home your are letting every person he has been in contact with for two weeks, and that is a lot of people. Good luck. I was surprised he had no protective gear on when he arrived at our home. I am pretty confident though that the mask really makes a difference.

I had 3 bids for an A/C system back in Nov. I’m having the one guy come out tomorrow to finalize the project. I live in SWFL so A/C is a necessity. My plan is to wear a mask. I do not know if they will be wearing them. I didn’t think to ask. I also will clean well with my alcohol wipes after they leave.

ETA: I am having them include the UV light. Well worth the $250 and because it will be a new system with that light, it will not allow anything to grow. I feel this is a great investment since I’m a cancer patient and my daughter and I have bad allergies.

it is more important for him to wear a mask then you, though you should wear one too.
we are in southwest florida too and as you know it has been really hot and humid for

We had a plumber come in and it was their company policy that employees wear masks. They left it up to us if we wanted to wear one but they sent out a picture of who would be coming so we had an idea when a masked guy knocked at our door.
At the lab it seems most outside venders are requiring their employees to wear masks when they are in field locations but again aren’t asking us to wear them in the lab.
We don’t wear them in the lab with our small group but we all wear them in public elsewhere. There are only 5 of us total.

There is no way around it-- it is scary letting a stranger into your home-- but
sometimes there is no choice-- it is best to think positive thoughts-- that is what
i finally did to get some peace of mind.
