Heather Caras is missing from her home in Linton, North Dakota, since 11:00 AM on Friday, January 24, 2025. The next day, her vehicle was found abandoned on Beaver Bay with the keys in the ignition. She may go by the last name "Wagoner" and she has ties in Colorado, Utah, Nevada and North Carolina. She is described to have brown hair and blue eyes. Heather has two boys who need her, one of whom has special needs and requires constant care. It is completely out of character for her to leave them behind.

LE seems to believe she left willingly with the help of someone. She might have taken steps to avoid being located

Heathers FB
She posted many many songs one after the other, on the same date. Just an observation, I find it strange.

Heather, like me, has a soundtrack to her life. I have been known, on occasion, to fill my feed, sometimes all day, with what I am listening to. I call it falling into the youtube vortex and often I will drag my facebook friend list with me when I do so.

Now, unlike Heather, I do not do that every day. But it appears as if that is her normal FB posting style. Every day all day, the music on her mind or listening to, she shares. She has a very wide range of genres that she likes and listens to. On January 17th she mentions her grandmother and how she had an amazing playlist and love of music, and talks of missing her.

I don't see anything jumping out at me as alarming on her FB. I hope Heather is located okay, sounds like her kiddos need her.

ETA, ah, she plays guitar (old photo posted in 2022 of her playing), now her love of music makes even more sense to me.

Nothing on her where she lives now but a lot of cases, assaults, and drug charges from when she lived in North Carolina. I did not have time to check Utah, Colorado, or Nevada. A brief overview from N. C. Judicial System:

Nothing new, just another source reporting. Per the article:

Investigation has found Caras may have been in contact with an acquaintance living out of state to assist her in leaving the area and may have taken steps to avoid detection or being located.

According to this update posted by KVRR News 1 day ago by, she may have been seen in Fergus Falls.

I feel so bad for her boys.

Link to news station's facebook:

i wonder what made her want to leave, and how the police found out about it so quickly
Why does anyone do anything? Power, sex, money... Pressure? Escape? New life?

I imagine it was reported quickly because it was so out of character, especially when she has a son with special needs who requires constant care.

I sure hope they can locate her. Soon.

When I saw that she has a special needs child who needs constant care, that's what I thought might have made her leave. She may have caretaker burnout and may have taken things to the extreme of walking away. There is so little support in general for caretakers. Of course her child's needs are most important but I do wonder if she cracked under the pressure. MOO.

This is the police announcement out of Fergus Falls Minnesota .

If an ATL has been issued, doesn't that mean it is police looking FOR HER, rather than this just being a missing person case report?? I gather that is why the extensive language of protecting her kids. moo

I found it strange as well,, though I am sure many may not....
But it is just so regular...3 minutes apart for sooooo many.
Is there some automated way this can be done?
It's possible to schedule posts for some time in the future, though I've never done it myself. Not sure why she would want to do three minutes apart, but it might be some reason that makes sense only in her head. MOO

Since the ATL came out of a district in North Dakota, I did a specific court record checkm both criminal and family courts, there. No open charges, a small fine for a marijuana possession infraction (less than ½ oz) from 2023 and a couple of minor speeding tickets.

Petition for Appointment of a Guardian

There's not enough info in the case summary to determine if she was petitioning FOR guardianship (not sure why she would have to do that unless she wasn't the biological or custodial mother) OR she was already the guardian and petitioning to something related to that. Maybe one of you who has a background in family law can make sense of the events and orders of the courts notes. https://publicsearch.ndcourts.gov/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=5291085

As to the ATL:
Sometimes an ATL is simply for a missing person, but typically I’ve seen it as an attempt by Law Enforcement to locate someone with a bench warrant for arrest (fugitive) or when someone is wanted for a crime. An attempt to locate is sometimes considered an instruction from a police officer to other police officer to arrest someone on sight (for the cases involving active warrant).

In an attempt to locate the police may instruct other officers to arrest someone if they see them if only to take a statement regarding the crime in question (hearing that persons side of the story, not uncommon in domestic cases where one party is saying one thing and the truth is different though I don’t think Heather’s is a domestic case outside of the concern for her children because as the ATL stated “Heather may have taken steps to avoid detection or being located”.)

IF the person is indeed considered a “fugitive” NOT verified in this case at this time, the FBI may enter the name and identifying information of a fugitive into the National Crime Information Center and may also place a "stop" on the fugitive's fingerprint

Note: The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is a computerized database maintained by the FBI that allows access to criminal records and missing person information across all law enforcement agencies in the United States, to enable a nationwide search for the person in question - gg

So I was thinking what if she just left and didn't tell anyone, meaning she left kids/pets/house without making sure her responsibilities were taken care off. That would explain the ATL, at least for me. Because she is not really wanted but a warrant(at least from what I can see) or maybe they are waiting to have her in custody to charge her? See what her story is before charges are file.
just thinking out loud.
I do hope she is found and gets the support she might need.

Family law person here. It appears she was petitioning to be named guardian and that was granted after a hearing in April 2024. There was a standard assessment of the person needing guardianship, appointment of a GAL etc, and then it appears her petition was granted but no further court involvement on the case after summer of 2024 when some financial accounting paperwork was filed, which is pretty standard stuff. She may be the mother or related to the person but once someone turns 18, if they still need help managing finances or daily life or other issues, you need a guardianship to do those things on their behalf, especially if they aren’t competent to assign that power to you under a power of attorney, since they are then an adult.

I'm asking myself, who would want the guardianship of an incapacitated 18yo, if the guardianship has been to the mother all the time? Why now after the son's reached adulthood? And why would HC think, it makes sense to disappear (IF she is thinking like that)?

That is the question. Why obtain guardianship and vanish without a trace?

From a special needs mom point of view.. It takes a lot to gain guardianship of our special needs children after they turn 18. Once 18, we as parents no longer have any legal rights if something happens medically. We have no educational rights. Most children are on an altered educational program and remain in school until 21. We have to prove them incapacitated, serve them with paperwork, then take them to court, and prove to an ad litem and the court that we- their mother/father, ARE the best person to care for them after they become of age and not the state. It is a very emotional process, but one that is done with love and determination to do what is best for our children. It also takes a long time to complete, with most states having parents start filing at age 15½, to ensure guardianship is in place by 18.
Looking at the documents objectively and not as her friend, she became his guardian with no issues and was able to care for him in whatever way he needed per the state of ND.
Looking at the other tickets- the ½oz fine was paid in full as well. No outstanding anything.
All the old stuff from NC is also closed.

My thoughts are along the same as yours.. why go through all that just to vanish?
Are there any activities in her bank statements?
With so much social media.. so much digital footprint.. how can someone just up and disappear?
What about ring cameras, restaurant/store cameras/traffic/gas station cameras?
Did anyone see her or something the day of or the night before?
There has to be something, somewhere that was missed...
Jmo.. I miss her.. and pray she is safe. 🥺
