Honolulu Mother And Her Partner Charged In Daughter's Abuse Death

Now Sarai’s mother and her partner have been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. Janae Perez and Ashleigh Utley also face a host of other charges in Sarai’s death and the alleged abuse of the three other children.

Janae Perez and her girlfriend of four years, Ashleigh Utley, are accused of killing 3-year-old Sarai Perez Rivera, and also starving and abusing her three siblings for years.

Sarai died on June 13, 2024. Officers were called to the family’s home in Kapolei where, according to police, first responders found Sarai “malnourished and pulseless with ashen skin and bruises to her legs, hips, arms, face, back and head,” said Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s homicide detail during a press conference Thursday.

When officers found Sarai, they said Janae blamed her five-year-old son for her death, telling him it was his fault.

"Janae and Ashley would primarily hit the children with their hands, sticks, paddles, slippers and belts to all parts of their body," Thoemmes said.

Asked if the children were denied food, Utley replied, “Hell, no, did you see our cabinets? We have a lot of food,” the complaint alleges.
