I'm wondering if the jury will believe SC did this. Its one thing to believe he had the motive but this was a truly terrible murder. Its not for the faint hearted.

The police believe that he did this.
His former friends believe that he did this. (Drew and Kurt Kaiser, Kyle Knight, Adam Gaines)
Taylor Farner, his ex-girlfriend, believes that he did this.
Cass, his more current ex-girlfriend believes that he did this.
Charli's family members believe that he did this.
Charli's family friends believe that he did this.
SC's former co-workers and supervisor believe that he did this.
Many/most of us Websleuthers believe that he did this.

IMHO, a jury will believe it, too.

It's conceivable that SC took a dead pig to Paraquats in response to KK's talking about the smell of decomposition wafting up to the hwy. I'm sure I remember Loo saying pigs weren't usually seen in that area, but I am not inclined to review the trial
videos.

I think small black pig. Loo testified it was not a place pigs were normally found. So a baby pig would be even more odd if that is accurate.
Excellent pondering that maybe he DID put the pig there to explain the smell.
I didn't think that far. I was just thinking that this other guy said that's how he would hide a body, but that the Paraquats pig would have been to small so not the case here.

"Jones said he continued searching about 50 yards up the river towards the bridge and noticed that there was a decomposing boar that appeared to have been there for “for a long time.” from Maui Now

So what is a long time? Seems decomposing happens fast in that environment. Was the pig placed in a convenient manner? How small was it actually?

Is the trial not back in session yet after the bad weather? I keep looking for the videos on youtube but can't find anything.

You're still up, Maisebelle? Must be about 4 am in England.
Trial resumes, I believe, on the 17th.

Well MamaM now I'm sitting here pondering this pig. Where exactly was it? Closer to the bridge MJ said. How close was that to the cut tree location and the river? To the other items found?
Man I wish someone could draw a diagram to show this.
Could Max really tell how long the pig was there?
Because really, who would pick up a decaying pig thinking it had anything to do with any of this?
Hypothetically if SC did place that pig there, almost as a preverbal stop sign to not go further, there could be a search area just beyond the pigs location.

It is! I've been unwell and keep falling asleep through the day. Unfortunately it means I am wide awake during the night. I forgot the trial was on hold for two weeks. What was the reason for this?

Sort of a sacrificial scent

I don't know, HGO. Hoping that better fact finders on this thread will chime in.
"Small". "Been there for a long time". "Closer to the bridge". All sounds so vague now, doesn't it?

Ok I know I'm reaching here. Where's that pig farm again? The one down Hana Hwy? We keep wondering why he drove towards Hana.
Where would one get a sacrificial baby pig?

People raise pigs. Shoot the Moma capture the Babys. Pigs everywhere here. I saw Wild Pigs out back of Target a couple weeks ago.

SC probably didnt know you couldnt get gas at night so maybe he was hoping. 1/4 tank is maybe 5 gallons plus a reserve. He could have made it

Well, I'm stretching here, too. Possible from "friendly" wild boar hunters, such as guys in the RustyBoar.com?

Oh, I'm editing because I just saw your post, PT. Your explanation sounds more likely than my guess.

I thought the same thing when I first heard about the dead pig, MM: Could Steven have placed a dead pig there to account for the smell and head people off at the pass when they rappelled down from the highway bridge to investigate?

But I dismissed the idea because of the testimony that the pig carcass looked old and sunken in. But now that we're revisiting the idea, I think it could be possible that he'd stumbled upon a dead pig carcass somewhere, and put it in his vehicle, then tossed it off the bridge so that if anyone investigated, they'd see it and go "Ahhh, there it is: the source of the rotting smell."

Or, the pig was there all along and died naturally, contributing to the stench that was permeating the area by Wednesday.

Moxie, my money is on the dead carcass placed there to explain the smell.
I don't think the pig was there all along, as Loo said he was surprised to see a pig in that area......not typical.
When did Max and Loo see the dead pig/boar? Do you recall? Was it after KK mention the strong smell at the bridge?

It was Thursday evening that Max found the small boar up near the bridge, I believe. That's the day after Kyle brought the rotting stench to Steven's attention. I've been theorizing that Kyle's words are what made Steven dismember & remove the body on Wednesday night so that the remains were gone by Thursday evening when Phaedra, Max, & Molly went there. Maybe he tossed the pig down there too, to account for the smell that was being discussed, and keep people from going any further downstream.

Moxie,
Yes, do you recall if the area where the pig was spotted was ever rechecked by detectives/investigators when looking for Charli's body?
And, if SC did throw a dead, decomposing pig into his vehicle perhaps that is why he was using bleach while cleaning his car. We suspected Charli's dismembered body/parts were why, but it may well be the pig instead.
Would the cadaver dogs have checked the area of the dead pig? Is that area very removed from the crime scene, do you know? If not, Charli's remains might be there.

Good thinking re: the bleach. I keep getting hung up on the fact that there were two bleach bottles in front of the vehicle - why two? - but it could just be as simple as a Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale. Ha!

I know that both Max & Molly hiked upstream and only smelled 2 rotting smells: the blanket and the small pig near the bridge. The bridge is about 150 or so feet from the place where the blanket was found (although Molly overestimated & said 300 ft). I don't believe SC would put the dismembered remains anywhere in the vicinity of the pig or the bridge. I think he put them away from there...because otherwise, what would the point have been to remove them in the first place from the crime scene?

SC may have remembered seeing a pig's carcass on some road somewhere, and when Kyle started freaking him out by commenting on the rotten smell, he went and collected the carcass before returning to Nua'ailua that night to remove the remains. And tossed the pig down there to account for the smell.

Or the pig could be totally unrelated. There are a lot of pigs on Maui, someone could've thought it'd be fun to toss a little pig off a bridge. There's a lot of indifference to animal suffering in Hawaii in general among certain segments of the populace.

Juror question for Molly Wirth:

Q: Did you conduct any searches at Nuaʻailua besides walking along bay and searching between river and dirt road?

A: “We definitely have gone back since. I believe a few times, even for work looking for miconia. We’ve searched pretty much the whole area since then. I feel like I know that area very well now.”

I think the whole area has been scoured very well by searchers & police back in Feb '14, and afterward, and I don't think the remains are there. JMO.

But I do think it's very possible that SC tossed that old pig carcass over the bridge.
