Loio, thank you so much! That is the visual I needed to rule out the stream disposal possibility. I could not get the visual of the dog "snorkeling" in the stream out of my head.

The dogs were brought back to the area a month after the murders and were still able to pick up the scent. They are amazing.

The dogs didn't alert to human remains at four other search locations in East Maui that day, Gajate said.
The search areas included an area where there were depressions in the dirt near a guardrail at Mile Marker 19.5 on Hana Highway and another location near a guardrail where police reported bloody clothing had been found, Walden said. "There was no indication of human remains" at those locations, she said.
When both dogs and handlers returned to Maui on March 8, 2014, the dogs again alerted to the spot at Nua'ailua Bay with the tree and rock, Gajate and Walden testified.

http://www.mauinews.com/page/conten...-describe-dogs-separately-detecting-odor.html

However, they didn't pick up scent at any of the other locations they were taken to. So... either the dogs were not taken to the place where SC transported the remains, SC was able to mask the smell with bleach/heavy bags/tarp with zip ties/something else, or any combination of those things, or he was able to carry the remains to the ocean and dispose of them there, which I still think is possible.

MOXIE:
Websleuth forum linked the pics in the 2nd post. They don't show on the page, rather they open up in a new page. Not my doing.

PARKING BY THE BAY: Highly doubt it, even back in 2014. Charli's 4runner wouldn't have made it all the way to the bay. SC's 4runner made it to the same halfway point as Molly's truck. If you care about your axle, I don't think driving down to the bay is worth it. Just walk in. It's a 20 minute walk from the gravel road. The thickest vegetation is also higher up. That's not to say all of it isn't thick - just the forest changes as you get closer to the ocean. Less trees, more high grass, more scattered rocks.

CRIME SCENE: Impossible to get to at this time if it's still there. The stream was running very high, recent rains caused huge boulders to scour the banks and felled a lot of trees. The mud was ankle deep 10-15 ft from the stream.

CHARLI AND JOSHUA MEMORIAL: At the bridge on the highway is a little patch of trees with momentos, candles and well wishes. Whenever we visit we leave something for baby. Handmade leis hang from the trees. It's beautiful. While walking down the path I collected flowers and left them on a pile of rocks at the shore. Charli's presence is there. I don't feel it at the memorial up on the highway but rather down at the shore. It's so beautiful out in the sunshine. I'm not trying to be a weirdo but she hates the dark places and hangs out in the bright, open air until she's found. That was the overwhelming calm I felt sitting on the rocks while our little ones played in the pool. My eyes were constantly drawn up to the cliff walls, particularly a drop along the highway that was thick with trees.

Anyway go visit for yourselves. It's a beautiful place, pay your respects. Leave everything intact, don't even take any pebbles home. Don't go looking for the crime scene, it's disrespectful, macabre and not there anymore.

.

I have a question: does anyone know if a strong hack of a machete can slice cleanly through a bone?

Probably not all the way through. I use a Machete a lot on our property in Haiku. It would more splinter and break I think. Unlike say a Meat Cleaver that has a lot of weight behind it.

Thank you very much for the thorough response.

In your second picture post, I can see 2 of the pics but when I click on any of the three attachment links, i get an error message. It's ok though, I guess they work for other people so maybe it's just my browser or something. ;-)

I was moved by it as well. I want to make a lei for Charli and Joshua. I'm not sure when I will return to Maui, but Charli is originally from California, so maybe it's OK to make it here.

Evidence Specialist Earles is still undergoing cross-examination. They are discussing a disposable camera and cell phone in a black cloth case... found near the Ace rewards card?

There were no fingerprints recovered from the Ace rewards card.

ES Earles report says "Other evidence recovered: disposable camera and cell phone in a black cloth case."

They also found, but did not recover a black fanny pack buried in the soil. It was 25 feet to the west of the black bra.

Found at Nua'ailua crime scene:
Ace loyalty card
Disposable Camera
Cell Phone in black cloth case
Blood Donor card (heavily soiled)
black Fanny pack, heavily soiled
and numerous other items.

I'm getting frustrated hearing about the disposable camera and cell phone and items that Earls never investigated further!

I know! Especially the cell phone! I wonder if it belonged to that officer that never found his.

Two hiking boots and a green tank top were also found and not tested.

Apo is suggesting that pig hunters mark their trails by making cuts in trees.

Earls said earlier in the week, the decision on what to process and test is in hands of lead investigator, not himself.

Rivera said on Wed he wanted to be feeling better Fri because of FOUR off-island witnesses coming in. One is from a lab that ran the DNA. Surprised Earls was not bumped.

Apo missed his calling as a fiction writer for the worst kind of novelettes.

I remember an officer getting his sunglasses knocked off by a tree branch and someone finding it later, but I don't think i've heard someone lost their cell phone out there. If that happened, I would assume the one they found is that one.

My lord...I'm really just so annoyed.

Wet black ski-mask found...not tested.

Fanny pack lodged in soil & Earls just left it buried in the soil after photographing it. Never opened it. Unbelievable...

pair of rubber Toad Climbing shoes....no further testing done.

Cell phone & DISPOSABLE CAMERA - apparently no testing or anything was done on these items!!!!!!!

WTH??? This is the reason Maui PD has a reputation for being dull-minded and dropping the ball.

Did Charli have a blood donor card & did she keep a fanny pack in her car?

Who uses a disposable camera in this day and age?

Soooo many questions now. The evidence collected was so much more extensive than we originally thought. We heard about the miscellaneous items that Phaedra/Max/Molly found on Thurs night.....and we heard about the biological evidence & cut marks.......but we never heard about all this other stuff until now, AFAIK.

Does anyone think there's a chance that SC did NOT do this, based on these new finds?

Not me. I don't think there is the slightest sliver of a chance that anyone else did this. I will only list my top 3 reasons for brevity.

1. Motive. Nobody else had a reason to kill Charli.

2. Nala. A random rapist/robber/psycho killer would not be likely to approach a woman accompanied by a large dog. He would find a more vulnerable victim.

3. Mace. Charli carried Mace in her car. She would have sprayed a threatening stranger.

I'm still convinced it was SC as well, but my brain is racing wildly trying to place all of these new items into their proper context within the crime.

So Steven would've worn: the ski mask(?), green tank top, dark jeans, toad climbing shoes, gray zippered hoodie. Brought a back pack with a change of clothes. When he was done with the crime, he undressed as he hiked back through the brush, then stopped to put on his change of clothes from a backpack he'd brought.

Some of those items might have been from others who went hiking in that area. The disposable camera might have been from the previous century (do they even make those any more?) The green tank top could have been a 2X. The shoes might not have been his size. Maybe there were valid reasons that some of these things were not tested. Maybe it was a financial reason - DNA testing is expensive, maybe PD put its resources into testing the items they thought had the most bang for the buck, so to speak.

Apo is just throwing up a smokescreen. Look over here, don't look over there at my obviously guilty (IMHO) client.

Umm ladies, hold on a second. We found a pair of board shirts size 30, a ripped and torn sleeping bag and other random items clearly washed down by the rains. MPD is not the garbage man. They picked up items that were probably not buried in the mud or aged indicating that they'd been there for months.

Well the site is only a small way downstream from the Hana Hwy bridge - it's not near the coast. My thought about the disposable camera, Red Bull can, etc. is that tourists would have gotten out and looked down from the Hana Hwy bridge and dropped or tossed items down from the bridge into the stream below. There may be random debris that has collected over the years all along the length of the stream as items get snagged or water recedes. That is, IF these items were found close to or in the streambed.

Regarding hikers, this was not a popular hiking spot and there were no hiking trails, the trees/brush from the dirt road to the stream is extremely thick so there would not be a lot of people hiking there. I think it's likely that Steven brought items from Charli's 4-Runner to dispose of there before he torched it. I assume some of these "numerous items" originated from her vehicle.
