Davis Samuel Cortez, Jr.
Cortez, circa 2000
Cortez was last seen at his workplace by a fellow employee between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. on April 15, 2000. He worked nights at the Amfac/JMB Lihue Plantation sugar cane processing plant in Lihue, Hawaii.
When he failed to respond to a call for assistance from a supervisor, Cortez's co-workers went looking for him but there was no trace of him. They found his midnight snack, coffee mug, car keys, and street clothes in the break room. His vehicle remained in the company parking lot.
The day after his disappearance, a shredded green shirt and a mangled rubber work boot in Cortez's size were found in a cane juice extracting machine, located a mile away from the processing plant. The crime lab tests conducted on the boot were negative, although blood was not expected to be found, as it had been washed in the cane-cleaning process.
Cortez's family speculated that he fell or was pushed into the cane-crushing equipment inside the factory. Authorities however, do not believe a person could fall in by accident because of the way the crushing machines are designed. A six-week investigation by the Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSHA) concluded he did not fall into the crusher, but his family disagrees with this conclusion. He has never been heard from again and it's unclear what happened to him.
