Woman Still Missing on Molokai | The Molokai Dispatch

Molokai Police Detective Kyle “Ikaika” Bishaw-Juario said police have conducted multiple searches for her in the Kalae area with no results.

A $500 reward has been posted for information leading to her whereabouts.

Moments before her disappearance on June 24, her speeding vehicle hit Pala’au Park caretaker Jerry Rich, who was working near the side of the road. He was uninjured but said he believes she was trying to harm him. She continued driving to the lookout parking lot, where she abandoned her car, along with her phone, purse and other belongings, and fled into the woods on foot. That was the last time she was seen.

Bishaw-Juario said because of the possible hit and run incident, a criminal investigation is underway and the initial police search on foot of the area that day involved Reid as a suspect in the case.

However, when she was not found and days passed with friends and family not hearing from her, police initiated a separate, missing person case five days later, Bishaw-Juario said. That triggered a search by helicopter of the cliffside area and a day-long foot search of the surrounding area.

“We’ve had past encounters with her, we know she’s done stuff to hurt herself, so we knew we really needed to start looking for her,” said Bishaw-Juario of initiating the missing person case. Reid is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and her mental illness has caused unpredictable behavior in the past, according to family and friends.

The search brought no answers, however.

On July 28, about a dozen police and some additional fire personnel conducted another search focusing on the south side of Kalae Highway from the Phallic Rock trail to the old mule ride barn, said Bishaw-Juario. The day-long foot search followed a grid pattern for comprehensive coverage from the edge of the road to about 600 yards into the woods, he said. Searchers also circled back and looked along the cliffs one more time.

Cadaver Dog Joins Search for Missing Woman | The Molokai Dispatch

The search continues for Gianina Reid, a 25-year-old woman who disappeared at Pala’au State Park on June 24 – now with police again taking the lead and community volunteer searchers “standing down.” Last Friday, police brought in a cadaver dog from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency to search the Kalaupapa lookout area. Though the area had been extensively scoured by police and volunteers in the past, this was the first time a trained dog had been brought on the case.

“There have been eye witness reports and other evidence leading away from this area but recent findings have brought us back here,” said Molokai police detective Kyle “Ikaika” Bishaw-Juario. “We utilized HIEMA’s cadaver dog to recheck the area. Because this is an ongoing investigation, there is certain information that we cannot release. We appreciate the public’s efforts in assisting us in search efforts as we will continue to investigate this as best as we can.”

With police reigniting the search, community volunteers – about two dozen of whom had completed a search of the Pala’au State Park area two weeks ago – say they are awaiting further need.

“Molokai Police Department is continuing the search for Gianina Reid so we, the ‘volunteers,’ are on “stand down” until police exhaust their methods, manpower and funding,” wrote Kimberlyn Scott on the Find Gianina Reid Facebook page she created. “Then we step back up if Gianina has [still] not been found.”

Woman Still Missing | The Molokai Dispatch

On Saturday, Sept. 25, members of the Search Tech Advisory Team, a nonprofit search and rescue organization based on Maui, came to search by drone. However, the $32,000 drone experienced technical difficulties and the effort again found nothing, according to Kimberly Scott, a Maui-based search and rescue coordinator who has been assisting with volunteer search efforts at the request of Reid’s family. She added they plan to return for a continued drone search.

Community members with experience in the park’s treacherous terrain gathered on Sept. 4 and 5 to conduct a volunteer search of Pala’au Park and nearby areas. The intent was to find Reid’s remains or signs of her last known location. Searchers found no significant evidence during the two-day effort.

Police had previously conducted multiple searches of the area on foot and by drone and helicopter.

The original article raises interesting questions. <modsnip: rumors> Unfortunately I do not believe she is still alive, whether by her own hand or by anothers.

Reid was last seen in Kaluakoi, Hawaii on June 24, 2021. She went to Pala'au State Park that day, and struck the park caretaker, Jerry Rich, with her vehicle, knocking him down. He was uninjured. Afterwards Reid left her car in the Kalae parking lot at Kalaupapa Lookout with all her belongings inside it, Rich saw her running into the woods. She has never been heard from again.

Rich knew Reid because she visited the state park often in the year prior to her disappearance, and he had spoken to her at length. He said she was driving very fast when she hit him and he thinks she hit him intentionally and was trying to kill him, but he doesn't know why.

Reid has a long history of mental health issues and had had multiple police encounters as a result. She had been making progress prior to her disappearance, was taking her medication, and had gotten approved for disability payments. She had been living in Hawaii for about three years before she went missing.

Due to Reid's mental illness, her family fears she may have taken her own life. Her case remains unsolved.
