HI HI - Honolulu, Fem UP10157, 2-4, severed fingers in dumpster, Feb'12

I suppose that there is difficulty in identifying the child's fingers ... perhaps they don't match any missing person's database. If the child was only 2.5-4 years old, if the child was not reported missing, then the mother must know ... has to know ... and is remaining silent. Is she afraid?

Is she dead too? Who really knows. This is bizarre.

Only benign thing I can think of is some sort of accident, where the parents rushed the kid to the ER, but in the craziness of the event, the actual fingers were lost and made it into the trash. That said, I feel like something like this would be cleared up quickly, unless the family no longer lived in Hawaii.

Police have checked for the ER scenario and came up with nothing.

Children have cut off fingers (on their own?? Purposely??) and parents haven't taken them to the hospital?? That I do not understand. I think I'd run the risk of having a big hospital bill as opposed to my child possibly DYING.

Even if the parents hid this, wouldn't someone else (relatives, friends, neighbors) notice a child missing six fingers?? This is so bizarre.

I had a weird thought this morning. I wondered if this wasn't part of some Asian superstition or something similar. After some Googling around I found this. . .

The powerful need to mutilate children's bodies is found in nearly all cultures in some form, and reaches back to the Paleolithic caves where handprints on the walls130 show clearly that children's fingers were cut off in the widespread belief by many cultures that the Devil (the destructive parental alter) demanded a child's finger to appease his wrath. Frazer documented these finger sacrifice rituals in many cultures, and sanctuaries have been found as far back as the Neolithic with finger bones, right up through ancient Greek times, when, Pausanias reported, finger sacrifice rituals were still performed to pacify pursuing demons.131 Finger amputation was also endemic in Ocean, Polynesia and among North American Indians.

Hmm. . .I know this is ancient history, but I do wonder if some poor child wasn't the victim of somebody, perhaps with some mental illness, that was convinced they were warding off the devil. :(

My father (I've spoken some about him here), is the kind that would do something like this. I can also say, because of the fact that I have some very odd family members, that a child that had their fingers cut off would not necessarily die from blood loss. A car's cigarette lighter is the right size and gets hot enough to cauterize a child's fingers. Infection would be the biggest risk, but blackmarket antibiotics are easy to find, if you know where to look. There is a possibility that this kid is still alive somewhere, and no one knows. How many times do we hear horror stories about kids that never had their births recorded, never went to school, never went to the doctor, and then one day when they are ten or twelve, someone notices their existence? I hope with everything in me that this isn't one of those cases. I hope there is a logical explanation, but I am having a hard time figuring out what that might be.

Interview with Experts at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command.

They were classified as fragments.

If they belong to a girl she is between 2 and half and 4 years old.

If they belong boy then he is between 3 and 5 years old.

They can not tell if they came from a girl or boy.

The fingers are dry to the touch, leathery and not well preserved.

My daughter fell carrying an UNOPENED can of soup. It was a "crushing injury."
It crushed the finger and cut it off because she landed on the can, (had a ring on her chest) the can landed on the finger. *shudder*

The little boy who had his hand amputated because Dad super glued his finger back on, had cut his off with an OPEN can trying to grab a toy.

I'm not suggesting the child intentionally cut off the fingers.
I'm suggesting that maybe the child got in the way while someone was working. Chopping vegetables or something? Using tools?
My Dad cut his thumb off with a table saw. (Yes, this is obviously a genetic thing in our family.)

Then after it happened, for whatever reason... money, CPS, simply being cheap, they weren't taken in and were just bandaged up to heal..

I know 6 fingers make it less likely, but it's still possible as far as I'm concerned. Anything is possible.
The way my daughter cut off her finger would have sounded pretty crazy to me if I hadn't seen it too.
The doctors said they see opened can slices all the time, but not unopened ones. Dull object, crushing amputations are not common at all. :twocents:

Thanks for the update s_b. I was just thinking about this as I was cutting my son's nails last night. It's so disturbing.

I keep waiting (and hoping) to hear that it's a hoax but I'm afraid it's very real.

There hasn't been any news coverage. Not on TV or local radio. If I hear anything I'll post it here.

This story was featured on NG's show tonight. The mother of 5 who found the fingers has been ruled out as a suspect. The fingers are from either a 2-4 yr old girl or a 3-5 yr old boy. No current missing child's report in the area. No leads from interviewing the residents of the apartment complex.

On the news last night here. I don't see it in print. Very short blurb.

They said DNA testing showed it is a little girl. Additional information said she could have been as young as two.

There have been no leads. Calls have come into crimestoppers but they have been theories instead of leads.

LE has no leads as of right now.

They said that the fingers may have not come from the community in which the dumpster is located and that they have no idea of the age of the fingers. (how long they've been severed from the hand not the age of the child)

Just asked for people to call crimestoppers if they had leads and such.

Found an article.

ETA: In the article it states that national media picked up the story because of the "gruesomeness and novelty". Pretty much the attitude about media here especially from the mainland. Crime's aren't reported on here as much as on the mainland. They happen here but they don't get reported on. IMHO it has to do with the main source of revenue for this island which is tourism. JMHO.

Just checking in. No news.

i wanted to say it was possible she was not dead. but then someone hopefully would notice a child w no fingers.

then i wanted to say maybe it was an accident. i know someone whos child lost two fingers whent hey got caught in a fence.

but 6? cant get around it, they had to cut them off :(

wtf is wrong w ppl!?!!!!! it makes me sick how children are mistreated this way.

My guess is either an unreported abused child or a child trafficked from another island like Guam or The Marshall Islands.

The preservation part is what bothers me the most. If a child was abused and someone decided to do that to them, would they preserve the fingers? It seems that is something out of a horror film where someone would keep the fingers as a token.
