Vernon Baker was staying at the Hostel where bag was tossed with Mary Beth's wallet. He was assigned a dorm with 2 women, who did not know him.

“He wasn’t normal like the usual people that come through are very nice,” Varady describes. “He seemed very too himself and didn’t really want to talk.”

Baker called Mary Beth for a ride a week before her death. Her ex-husband was with her at the time and Baker seemed agitated during the ride.

The man who pleaded guilty to murdering a Makiki woman four years ago was sentenced Wednesday.

Vernon Baker was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for stabbing Mary Beth San Juan to death in 2013.
