I'm starting a thread, and linked to related threads, to include these cases as the Church acts on them. That way, hopefully we have a central location here to follow them. (Mods, if this thread isn't appropriate in this subforum, please move it to the right one!)

Here's the one I saw from today (Oct. 13, 2018):

Pope Francis defrocks two Chilean bishops for sex abuse of minors

An abuse and cover up scandal has engulfed Chile's Catholic Church, with a probe identifying more than 160 abusers.

Pope Francis has defrock two retired Chilean bishops caught up in a sexual abuse crisis rocking Chile's Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican named the two men as Francisco Jose Cox Huneeus and Marco Antonio Ordenes Fernandez, archbishop emeritus of the cities of La Serena and Iquique respectively.

A statement on Saturday explained that the decision was taken on Thursday and cannot be appealed. The notice also referred to a canonical measure relating to "manifest abuse of minors" as being the reason for dismissal.

Defrocking, officially called "reduced to the lay state", means they have been expelled from the priesthood.

It is the harshest punishment the Church can inflict on a member of the clergy and such action has rarely been taken against bishops.

In early October, the religious order to which Cox belongs, the Schoenstatt Fathers, said the Vatican was investigating an accusation against him relating to the sexual abuse of a minor in Germany in 2004.
...

The defrockings come one day after the pope accepted the resignation of a US cardinal who was accused of covering up a sex abuse scandal in Pennsylvania.
...

Allegations of abuse and cover ups have dogged Chile's Catholic Church for years, but in recent months, an unprecedented investigation has ramped up efforts to identify victims and perpetrators.

More than 100 clergymen are under investigation in what is now the largest clerical sex abuse probe in Latin American history, spanning all of Chile's 15 mainland regions.

Prosecutors have raided church offices in five cities, uncovering evidence of abuses that were never reported to authorities.
...

The searches have so far identified 178 victims, 79 of which were minors at the time of the alleged abuse, and charged 167 members of the clergy with carrying out or covering up abuses.
...

In a shock move in May, all of Chile's 34 bishops resigned en mass over Francis' refusal to accept the resignation, following a crisis meeting.

So far, Francis has accepted seven resignations, not including the two bishops defrocked on Saturday.

A papal visit in January was marred by protests and calls for the pope to accept Barros' resignation, which had been offered several times.

Chile investigating 158 in Catholic Church over sex abuse

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Chile is now investigating 158 members of the country's embattled Catholic Church - both clergymen and lay people - for perpetrating or concealing the sexual abuse of children and adults, prosecutors said on Monday (July 23).

The cases relate to incidents dating back as far as 1960 and involving 266 victims, including 178 children and adolescents, according to public prosecutor Luis Torres.

Coverage from San Bernardino, California. (Sept. 2018)

Local Catholic diocese releases list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino, which includes Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, released a list of priests credibly accused of child sexual abuse since 1978 – many who spent time ministering in or near the Coachella Valley.

The list includes 34 church officials, of whom 14 are deceased. Five were permanently banned from the priesthood, and an additional 14 were permanently banned from ministry in the Diocese of San Bernardino. The list was based on what the diocese is calling credible accusations, drawn from their own records of abuse reported to diocesan personnel.

In September, eight priests were added to another existing list of alleged sexual predators released by the Diocese of San Diego, eleven years to the month after 144 claims of abuse by 48 priests resulted in settlements totaling more than $198 million.

A Washington, DC, cardinal resigned last week. He had ties to the Pennsylvania grand jury investigation.

Oct. 12 story:

Pope Francis accepts Cardinal Donald Wuerl's resignation as D.C. archbishop

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Donald Wuerl from his post as the archbishop of Washington, D.C.

In a letter released Friday by the Vatican, from the pope to Wuerl, the pontiff confirms he has accepted the archbishop's resignation and lauds Wuerl for putting the church's interests over his own personal defense against claims he protected abusive priests.

Wuerl, who led the Pittsburgh diocese for 18 years, was implicated in a recent Pennsylvania grand jury report and had faced increased calls to step down over allegations he covered up for so-called "predator priests." He also has been accused of failing to act on accusations against his predecessor in Washington, former Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick, who resigned in July over abuse charges.

Justice Dept. launches clergy abuse probe in wake of damning Pennsylvania grand jury report

The Justice Department has launched an investigation into alleged sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests throughout the Pennsylvania dioceses in wake of a damning report by a state grand jury, a person familiar with the matter said Thursday.

The action by the federal government, which has rarely pursued such inquiries, comes after a Pennsylvania grand jury in August concluded that church leaders protected more than 300 "predator priests" in six dioceses across the state for decades.

The report went on to assert that church leaders were more interested in safeguarding the church and the priests than defending victims.

More than 1,000 young victims were identifiable from the church's own records, the report found.

The federal investigation is based in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, said the person who is not authorized to comment publicly.

Pennsylvania church officials acknowledged Thursday that they had already received subpoenas seeking information.
