BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Iraq's state television has begun broadcasting ads appealing for the release of kidnapped U.S. journalist Jill Carroll including footage of her mother and a major Sunni Arab politician describing the 28-year-old freelancer as a friend of Iraq.

Carroll, who reported from Iraq for the Christian Science Monitor, was kidnapped Jan. 7 in Baghdad while on her way from the office of Sunni politician Adnan al-Dulaimi.

The one-minute long television appeal begins with two photographs of a smiling Carroll appearing on the screen.

"The kidnapped journalist Jill Carroll loves Iraq and she now needs your help," a male narrator says. "It's time for Jill Carroll to go home safely."

The appeal later shows archival footage of al-Dulaimi addressing a news conference.

"I appeal to those who kidnapped the American journalist Jill Carroll to release her. She is a woman who struggled for the sake of Iraq, defended Iraq and Iraqis," he said.

Mary Beth Carroll, the journalist's mother, spoke in English with an Arabic voiceover.

"I, Jill's father and sister directly appeal to Jill's kidnappers to free her, that young woman who worked hard to publicize the suffering of Iraqis," she said.

I sure hope the appeal has an effect, and Jill's captors release her. Extending the deadline until Feb. 26th isn't going to change anything; her kidnappers demands are falling on deaf ears.

Iraq Police: No Developments on Carroll

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi police are stepping up the search for kidnapped U.S. journalist Jill Carroll but report no new developments as the deadline set by her captors for the U.S. to meet their demands draws near. The 28-year-old freelancer for the Boston-based Christian Science Monitor was kidnapped in Baghdad on Jan. 7 and last seen in a videotape broadcast this month by the private Kuwaiti television station Alrai.

Station owner Jassem Boudai said the kidnappers set a Sunday deadline for U.S. and Iraqi authorities to meet their demands or they would kill her. The kidnappers had demanded the release of all women detainees in Iraq but Boudai indicated the group had provided more specific conditions which he refused to reveal.

On Sunday, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said an extensive search was underway for Carroll but had so far failed to find her. "Our forces raided some suspected places, but she was not there," Maj. Falah al-Mohammedawi said. "We are watching the situation closely." Since Wednesday, Iraqi security officials have been preoccupied with the grave security crisis that erupted when two bombs destroyed the golden dome of the Askariya shrine in Samarra, which is revered by Shiite Muslims.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jill and the devastated Carroll family. I simply cannot imagine the fear & terror all of them have been experiencing all these l-o-n-g weeks.

I agree that the taking of Jill Carroll's life will definitely not advance the cause of the terrorists - quite the opposite, imo. Do they have the brains to realize that fact?? Prayerfully - I hope so!

Thanks for the article update, Buzz. I'm hoping 'no news is good news'.

13th J, I was trying to think of a way that, the bombing of the Shiite 1200 year old Mosque, might defuse the will of Jill Carroll's kidnappers, such that they would choose to release her unharmed. Another deadline will not do them any good, so they are left with a finite number of choices. Of course, their Grandstand has diminished, as a lot fewer people are paying attention to them at the moment; they aren't on center stage at this time.

The term " the silence is deafening " really applies here.I thought by now someone on the news would have at least mentioned that there is no word on her fate. I know how strong the power of Prayer is,so I'm trying to remain hopeful.

Khalilzad cites Interior ministry; U.S. reporter has been captive since Jan. 7

MSNBC News Services

WASHINGTON - American journalist Jill Carroll is alive and Iraqi authorities are optimistic about her release, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad said Monday.

"The Ministry of Interior said that she is alive and that they have information with regard to where she might be held," Khalilzad said in an interview with Fox News.

"The minister announced today that he is optimistic about her release," he said.

The U.S. ambassador did not say how the Interior Ministry knew about Carroll's well-being.

A deadline set by kidnappers holding Carroll in Iraq passed Sunday with no word.

Carroll was kidnapped on a Baghdad street Jan. 7 and her translator was killed. Muslim leaders have joined her family, friends and colleagues in calling for her release.

"We are doing all we can to help bring about her release and we'll persist with that," Khalilzad said.

More than 200 foreigners and thousands of Iraqis have been kidnapped since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Raids but no results

Iraqi police on Sunday conducted raids in search of Carroll.

The 28-year-old freelancer for the Christian Science Monitor was last seen in a videotape broadcast Feb. 9 by the private Kuwaiti television station Al-Rai.

Station owner Jassem Boudai said then that the kidnappers had set Feb. 26 as the deadline for U.S. and Iraqi authorities to meet their demands or they would kill her.

The kidnappers, a formerly unknown group calling themselves the Revenge Brigades, have publicly demanded the release of all women prisoners in Iraq, but Boudai indicated the group provided more specific conditions that he refused to reveal.

On Sunday, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said an extensive search was under way for Carroll.

"Our forces raided some suspected places, but she was not there," Maj. Falah al-Mohammedawi said. "We are watching the situation closely."

Appeal for other hostages

Also Sunday, the Arabic-language Al-Jazeera satellite channel broadcast a tape it received from the family of another hostage, James Loney of Canada, appealing for his release and that of three colleagues abducted with him in Baghdad last November.

"James is a loving, compassionate, selfless man," said a woman relative who appeared on the tape. She did not say what her relation to Loney is, but may have been his sister-in-law since she said her husband and his relatives were scared for their brother.

Loney was one of four members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams seized Nov. 26 in Baghdad by the previously unknown group calling itself the Swords of Righteousness Brigade. The other three are a Canadian, an American and a Briton.

Since Wednesday, Iraqi security officials have been preoccupied with the grave security crisis that erupted when two bombs destroyed the golden dome of the Askariya shrine in Samarra, which is revered by Shiite Muslims.

The destruction of the site triggered a wave of reprisal attacks against Sunni mosques and clerics and pushed the country to the brink of civil war. Stepped up security - including daytime curfews and vehicle bans in the capital - have eased tensions somewhat.

Three Iraqi journalists were slain Wednesday while covering the shrine bombing.

The last I saw on CNN last night, the Iraqis think she is alive and are trying to find her and negotiate. Hope it's not just a rumor.

Yes, me too, MarthaTex!

The first segment on Nightline last night was all about Jill. The head of 'something' (LE related) said he had the name & address of Jill's captors - that his own sister had been kidnapped previously. She was held for 14 days. He said something about Jill being 'traded' to another group - that he 'knew' she was alive and felt she would be released. He seemed quite convinced of his information. One can only hope!

I wish I had seen the entire segment complete with names, etc. I'm sorry that I didn't.

Edited to add: Holy cow! I inadvertently taped it. It was an exclusive interview by Terry Moran of Iraqi's Interior Minister, who is also the man in charge of Iraqi's police force - Bayan Jabr Al Zubaidi.

The Interior minister would not say whether a ransom had been paid for his sister - but said that Iraqi's are kidnapped daily for ransom.

He thinks that Jill has now been sold to a more radical group. His view is that they will NOT kill her. There may be additional demands for Jill's release. Possibly specific male detainees. Recently 400 male detainees were released.

So, they just sell 'em to different "groups", kind of like we sell mortgages here? Ain't that just great.

According to the story above, Jim Cook (a Monitor editor in Washington), said Jill has talked to her father and she's healthy!

Also heard she is being medically examined presently!

Glad to hear this. It's great news at a time when there sure isn't much of that.

Her life has changed forever as has everyone who has been involved in any way in this situation.

I hope she gets good support and proper emotional and mental health care as she has been through so much.
