Firefighters Fight Fast-Moving Fire In East County

SAN DIEGO -- Approximately 300 firefighters battled a fast-moving fire burning in the East County area Sunday.

Cal Fire said the vegetation fire was 500 acres wide and was west of Harris Ranch Road and north of Highway 94. The Santa Ana wind-driven fire had 35-55 mph winds from the east that were pushing the fire to the west, authorities said. The fire crossed Highway 188 Sunday afternoon.

According to Cal Fire, current evacuations are from Potrero Park Road to the south, north of Highway 94, west of Harris Ranch Road and east of Potrero Valley Road. Highway 94 was closed between Forest Gate Road and Highway 188.

The Red Cross asked all evacuees to head to an evacuation site at Steel Canyon High School, which is located at 12440 Campo Road in Spring Valley. Authorities said earlier the evacuation point was Twin Lakes Café at 25275 Potrero Valley Road.

The county said it will post fire updates at www.sdcountyemergency.com. Residents should call 211 for all non-emergency calls related to the fire.

According to firefighters, at least one structure was destroyed. The fire started at 9:23 a.m. and the cause is under investigation, Cal Fire said.

For you Aussie's.......Olivia Newton John was evacuated from her home in Malibu today~
................................
The famous Malibu Pier that appeared in the 1990s television series "Baywatch" was being sprayed by country patrol boats to protect it from the blowing embers.

Southern California has been on "red alert" over the weekend due to the high winds, temperatures of near 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) and persistent dry conditions.

Malibu, around 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Los Angeles, is home to celebrities including Sting, Jennifer Aniston, Mel Gibson, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Richard Gere, Martin Sheen and Whoopi Goldberg.

Director James Cameron and Australian singer Olivia Newton-John were among those evacuated from their homes, celebrity site TMZ.com reported.

PS Just found out we have a fire starting here to East of us and just below Julian. This is where my daughter Annie and husband own a house....at Warner Springs. I sure hope they can put it out. We can smell the smoke here at the beach and the sky getting a little gray and little embers are in the air. We are a long way from this place ( 1 1/2 hours) but guess the wind must be blowing to the west!

Breaking news below from San Diego Union Trib.

10-21-07 (today)
2:25 p.m. The Hwy. 78 Fire has burned 3,000 acres. The Sheriff's Dept. is issuing an advisory evacuation for San Diego Country Estates in Ramona. The evacuation point is Poway High School at 15500 Espola Road.

My best friend just got off the phone with her niece who is being held in the cafeteria. They just now let them go to their dorms and grab some valuables and come right back. Her niece couldn't decide what to bring. She had just bought some $150 jeans and thought she should grab them LMAO! Kids!

Good decision ! ;)

Local firefighters head south to help fight fires
By Scott Marshall STAFF WRITER

A team of 22 Contra Costa-area firefighters was mobilized this afternoon to be sent to help fight wildfires in Southern California, possibly to a fire growing larger near San Diego.
Heavy, off-road fire vehicles from stations in Walnut Creek, El Cerrito, San Ramon and the East Bay Regional Parks Fire Department were ordered to gather at the San Ramon Valley Fire District's station 31 on San Ramon Valley Boulevard for the trip south, said Contra Costa fire Battalion Chief Dave George.
The firefighters are being sent to Prado Regional Park in San Bernardino County and could be deployed to Malibu or another fire in the San Diego area, George said.
They could be gone as long as two weeks.
Driven by powerful Santa Ana wind, fire threatened a university and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes in the Malibu Hills today, authorities said. Flames destroyed a church and several homes, one of them a landmark castle.
About 500 firefighters worked to protect Pepperdine University and some 200 homes in the upscale Malibu Crest and Serra Retreat neighborhoods, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Sam Padilla.
The blaze that started in Malibu Canyon had charred at least 1,000 acres. But the San Diego fire became more threatening this afternoon.

In this image, the third house from the right, with the tennis court behind it,
is possibly one of the houses that has been on fire.

I.b. nora.........I saw this on TV.......think it's the forth and fifth house that were burning......a a few more on the left. BUT that big house probably started on fire too. No fireman there, they're just burning! Their having a terrible time because this fire is moving so fast that even when they water from a plane the wind blows the water in a different direction!

Wow....this is a terrible fire! Thanks for posting that photo!

Think of all the hardships that are created by fast moving fires like these fires. All we can do is pray for the people and the animals, that everyone stays safe, and that they can relocate if necessary.

This is the fire down here, near Warner Springs ........where my Annie and hubby own a house. Don't know why they call it the Harris fire. It's near Julian and Ramona.......and right between those two places is Santa Ysabel on state Route 78 where we alway's stop and buy a Julian Apple pie, about 3 miles from Warner Springs. I don't know why my whole post didn't show up. This is the fire that we're smelling here at the beach!
