Human Predators Stalk Haiti's Vulnerable Kids

From i.b.nora's link:
"At the time, Mr. Puello introduced himself as Jorge Torres, and had a letter of introduction from a synagogue in Canada

It fits. One of the things US authorities say he's wanted for is bank fraud in the US and Canada.

Try Google Image Search using various permutations (full and partial) of the versions of his name mentioned in the articles. ...
Thanks, but Texas Mist just posted the set of pics I was thinking of and hoping to find.

Found an interesting article out of the UK - here's a snip:

According to David Key, director of Baptist Studies at Emory University's Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, that sea change has come at a time when the convention has been increasingly focused on domestic social and political issues as part of the Christian right, which has led it to sound a strong note of American superiority. "Anyone under 40 years of age will have spent their entire life in the America First model of evangelism," says Key.

That may help understand the predicament of the Baptists arrested in Haiti, but it doesn't make the child care workers of SOS Children's Villages International feel any less angry about what happened. The aid organisation is looking after the 33 children retrieved from Silsby and co in one of its purpose-built compounds outside Port-au-Prince.

The kids arrived there with their names written on pink tape attached to their clothes. They were hungry, thirsty and in some cases dehydrated. By the calculations of the organisation, up to 20 of them had parents who had been sweet-talked into letting them go.

A girl aged nine told an SOS worker that she could not wait to be reunited with her family. But she added that she wanted to be with her father, not her mother "because she gave me away".

Georg Willeit, a member of SOS's emergency team in Port-au-Prince, says several of the children were depressed and confused because they too were having to deal with the shuddering *realisation that their parents had willingly handed them over. He was baffled why the Baptists would have consciously inflicted such deep trauma on vulnerable kids.

"How can you rush into a family and tell them: 'You are so poor you cannot care for your child'? How can you say: 'We know what's best for your child, it's God's gift'? That takes away the dignity of the parents. It is against all human nature," says Willeit.

Just as Silsby's story morphed by the minute, so does Puello's. Why is this reminding me so much of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", the classic comedy where the cons con the cons?

And where was the orphanage to be? i.b.nora linked to a site which listed Playa Magante. FWIW, that's about 45 miles away from Sosua, where Puello has been mentioned. I found this on an earlier link:

http://chattahbox.com/us/2010/02/01...d-to-gather-100-haitian-orphans-cross-border/

"The link to the New Life Children’s Refuge, since removed, revealed the ambitious and careless plans of founder Laura Silsby, to “rescue Haitian orphans abandoned on the streets, makeshift hospitals or from collapsed orphanages in Port au Prince and surrounding areas, and bring them to New Life Children’s Refuge in Cabarete, Dominican Republic.” Silsby just recently incorporated the New Life Refuge in November, and there is no evidence that the organization has a website, telephone number or the financial resources to operate an orphanage in a foreign country."

So, Sosua, Cabarete, or Playa Magante?

Texas Mist--That's a great viewpoint. Make sure you watch the video I linked to as this shows the absolute disregard shown the children by other so called "charity workers". It is abysmal and disgusting.

From i.b.nora's link:

Is it any wonder that Silsby and Torres/Puello found each other some way? Conflictive is a good adjective for both!!

"At the time, Mr. Puello introduced himself as Jorge Torres, and had a letter of introduction from a synagogue in Canada, Mr. Rudman said.

Mr. Rudman said he heard over the years that Mr. Puello had grandiose plans to build a hospital and a Jewish city close to Santo Domingo's airport, but nothing came from these plans.

Mr. Rudman's impression from his one meeting with Mr. Puello was that he was very "conflictive," he said. "His attitude was 'the Messiah has arrived'" said Mr. Rudman."

Also from the WSJ linky that i.b.nora posted it says that Puello was (allegedly) hired based on a Google search!! I wonder if Mr. Ham found Puello's now offline website & decided that made him credible....Having a web presence is a *very* common tactic of scammers & cons because it lends 'legitimacy' to their persona or claims -- and often there's 'fake' info on the websites but gullible people do not do their homework & verify what's on it....how coincidental that site's offline, right?

What would you bet that John Duarte from Canada crossed paths with Puello/Torres at some point either doing his "charitable work" or while he was awaiting extradition? Maybe this was one of the other "situations" which Mr. Puello referred to in explaining why he would not charge a dime. This article is dated Oct. 21, 2009. Not long ago.

http://www.windsorstar.com/news/Win...+alleged+child+abuse+Haiti/2129327/story.html

"A former local priest, who founded a mission to aid the poor in Haiti, has been arrested in the Dominican Republic and is awaiting extradition to Canada to face charges of sexually abusing teenage Haitian boys.

John Duarte, 43, former leader of the Windsor-based Hearts Together For Haiti, was picked up Tuesday in the city of Puerto Plata by Dominican authorities on a warrant issued in Canada, according to a statement released by the Dominican Immigration Office and National Drug Control Directorate."

Silsby said that she had acquired land in Magante and that is where she intended to build her "orphanage". However, along comes the earthquake so she puts her plan in action and gets help leasing the parts of that hotel/getaway/resort/ near the beach in Cabarete for 6 months, from the Catholics. So, the immediate plan was to spirit the children away to Cabarete.

The "web presence" you describe was mentioned by one of Silsby's former employees of Personal Shopper, IIRC. Same tactics.

I'm impressed with you sleuthers; there sure are some well tuned 'hinky meters' here. Way to go.

Does everyone know that a Jorge A. Puello and his wife (wife, not girlfriend) had a house in Broward County, Florida that was foreclosed on? And there is a foreclosure sale on March 4, 2010?

If you check out a map of the North Coast of the DR, you'll see that Sosua (where Puello brags about being President of the Sephardic Community), Puerto Plata (where Duarte was arrested for sex abuse and held for extradition), Magante (where Silsby originally planned to build or "manifest" her orphanage), and Cabarete (Silsby's Plan B/rent from the Catholics--see Duarte).

Remind anyone of Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game"?

"We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game"

i.b.nora--(I'm kidding here.) Why yes, we all knew that and we were just waiting for you to find it on your own!! LOL

I did note in the link that TM posted that he and his "life partner" were in some trouble. I've also seen her described as his common law wife and a partner in the trafficking scheme. I've wondered if she's the procurer? All good pimps have one. Hmmm

I think this ties in with the translated version that TM posted above. My head is starting (starting???) to spin with the names:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/miami-dade/story/1477970.html

"Alejandro Puello -- who said he is licensed to practice law in the Dominican Republic -- said he challenged his cousin when he learned Torres Puello was lending legal advice to the American church group.

``I said, `Jorge, how, if you're not a lawyer?' '' he said. ``He told me, `I hired a lawyer for them in Haiti.' ''

During the press conference Friday in El Salvador, police said they will seek Torres Puello's extradition if evidence shows he is indeed the fugitive and accused child trafficker Torres Orellana.

ORELLANA'S CHARGES

Charges were filed last year against Torres Orellana after three young girls escaped captivity and led police to the house where they had previously been held.

Also charged was Ana Josefa Galvarina Ramirez Orellana. Though it is not clear how Torres Orellana escaped, Ramirez was convicted of trafficking humans between El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua."

Oh yeah, the girlfriend is in prison.

i.b.nora--I'm confused about the woman listed on the foreclosure and Ana Josefa. Which is Puello's life partner? Or is that the most naive/stupid question in the world?

Just as I said that the Mohler blog taught me so much about the history of Mormonism and the Texas Serial Rapist caused me to learn everything I could about pendulum clocks and the current street value of mounted deer heads, I'd have to say I'm getting quite an education about the history of Jews in the Dominican Republic. Don't EVER let anyone tell you that we aren't expanding our brains!!

  • #398
So Martha T. Puello is the wife. I wonder if she knows about the life partner, Ana, who's in jail? Anything else Mr. Puello has been keeping under his hat?

  • #399
My understanding is that Ana Josefa Galvarina Ramírez Orellana is the girlfriend or partner in crime. If you put Martha's name in Google, you will come up with some other information that identifies her as the wife of Jorge A. Puello. Since she so far isn't accused of anything, I will leave it at that.

I know we've looked at this article but I hadn't seen the name of Mr. Puello's wife before. Do they amend these articles or was this there and I just missed it?

From the NY Times article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/13/world/americas/13adviser.html

"Asked about his identity, Mr. Puello said that he had been married to Valerie Velasquez and that their home address in the United States had been in Plantation, Fla. Public documents and court records seem to tie, by name and birth date, Mr. Puello and the Florida street address to the suspect in the Salvadoran case."

and

"On May 26, 2009, the Salvadoran police said they had uncovered a well-organized sex trafficking ring, arresting Ana Josefa Galvarina Ramírez Orellana, who remains in prison, and charging a male suspect who is at large.

The suspect was working with Pablo Nasser, the former deputy director of the Salvadoran immigration service, to get the foreign women and girls into El Salvador, the authorities said."
