Hurricane Dorian - August/September 2019 #2

Maybe, but now is not the time. I can't imagine anyone going down there right now to have a good time. Lord knows I couldn't.

Totally agree, the only folks "going down there" are for rescue and humanitarian efforts.

I just can't believe they are encouraging tourism when people are dying. Its incomprehensible!!!!

Going to try my like button again on this page. So many wonderful, heartfelt posts. Too many now to go back and like/thank them all. I do have to say tho the response from the Bahamian Government came as no surprise to me. Sadly.

"The Bahamas will seek extensive foreign government aid and it is urgently appealing for cash donations, with assistance coming from both the private and public sector."

I wouldn't give that government a single dime in cash. Clean water, sanitation, food, shelter, generators, medical assistance, of course. But not a dime in cash.

I have a local agency that I give to. They airlifted supplies the second day. Generators, chain saws, water. Blessing Buckets by the thousands. They have everything, first aid kit, pop top food, water, feminine products, snacks, clothes wipes, bath towel/wash cloth, soap, razors, cleaning supplies, flashlight, batteries, toys in kids, and much more. It is a 5 gallon bucket completely full, all the same. Today they had a major drive to fill another tractor trailer.

I know my money, time and contribution is well used by these folks. They go everywhere.

Very smart, indeed.

??

They are dealing with dead bodies everywhere right now, hundreds trying to flee, people in contaminated water, hungry children, debris everywhere. They’re not thinking about tourism right now. They’ve just suffered a HUgE incomprehensible tragedy. I’m not sure what this means but those guys are going through HELL right now. Aint no party time, don’t know what you mean?

It was a response to the Bahamian official who invited us to come down and party and spend money to help their economy. (On the southern islands that weren’t hard hit, of course, but still a very tone-deaf invitation, in my opinion.)

"The Bahamas – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution in the Bahamas due to crime. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assault, occurs even during the day and in tourist areas. Although the family islands are not crime-free, the vast majority of crime occurs on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. U.S. government personnel are not permitted to visit the area known by many visitors as the Sand Trap area in Nassau due to crime. Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercrafts are often not maintained, and many companies do not have safety certifications to operate in The Bahamas. Jet-ski operators have been known to commit sexual assaults against tourists. As a result, U.S. government personnel are not permitted to use jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands."

The Emergency Field Hospital is going to be set up on Grand Bahama Island according to this news video from yesterday: FOX8’s Neill McNeill reports from the Bahamas as NC-based Samaritan’s Purse delivers emergency field hospital amid devastation

Hopefully they are already setting it up.

Hurricane Dorian Updates: Field Hospital, Water Filters, Shelter Plastic Sent to the Bahamas

The first plane load left Greensboro, North Carolina, around 9 a.m. on Sept. 4 and arrived in Nassau where it was unloaded. Onboard were emergency shelter materials, household water filters, and two community filtration units that turn saltwater into drinking water. Reports say 70,000 people are homeless following the storm.

Samaritan’s Purse is also using a small plane and helicopter to support our work on the islands and to allow team members to access hard-to-reach areas.

Currently they are on Nassau and traveling by air to GB. We'll see....

These folks are wonderful!!!

Hey guys. It's 2:20 AM here. This storm is no joke. I'm trying to sleep but it feels like the whole world is blowing around my house. It's an old house, but I can feel the wind coming through the walls. I don't think I was prepared for all the noise. We're sleeping downstairs tonight so that we are all together...and I don't know if it's my anxiety, but I'm afraid our roof might blow off. It seemed calm for a little while, but now it is worse than ever. Still no power, our well is on an electric pump so we have no water...but we picked up some water at the store a few days ago so that will be okay. Thanks for the news updates. Trying to get internet on my phone in the country is hard enough on a good day so it's nice to come and check in and read news updates all in one place. Take care everyone, will check in again when I can.

So sorry you are enduring this. I'm sure the sounds are causing much anxiety. Stay safe and know we are all sending prayers this passes quickly for you.

I was thinking earlier that perhaps @Lexiintoronto stayed offline before the storm to avoid the negative news.

I think if I was awaiting Dorian, reading what we heard about the Bahamas today would not be a wise choice.

Just thought I’d share that thought cuz I know some were worried about her absence.

Bahamians don't know how many bodies might be under rubble in Marsh Harbour

From CNN's Paula Newton in Marsh Harbour

One of the areas most affected by Hurricane Dorian's fury is known as the Mudd, a small town in Marsh Harbour in the northern Abaco Island.

There, concrete walls were smashed entirely and roofs were blown away, making it difficult to even locate one's own home.

Local authorities are worried that many victims might be under rubble, but they can't determine how many. In addition, recovering these bodies, the government says, will be a difficult task.

Most of the residents of the Mudd are Haitian migrants fleeing poverty and some of them are undocumented, who are too afraid to seek help in Nassau out of fear of deportation.

Hey everyone! It's 6:56 AM here in Eastern Prince Edward Island. We made it through the night but it was pretty scary. Did a quick check out the windows and there is lots of debris around. Our house is fine inside but we don't feel safe going outside to check on things yet. It's still pretty stormy. The power company is sending crews out this morning to assess damage, and hopefully remove downed trees and fix poles and wires. I'm doing a lot better now there's a bit of daylight. I hope you all are doing well!

The U.S. Agency for International Development on Saturday announced $1 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help Bahamians, bringing USAID’s total funding to more than $2.8 million so far.

The United Nations said eight tons of food supplies were to arrive by ship on Saturday at islands devastated by the hurricane. Some 14,700 ready-to-eat meals as well as logistical and telecommunications equipment are being delivered, said Herve Verhoosel, spokesman for the U.N. World Food Program.

“The needs remain enormous,” Verhoosel said.

The British Royal Navy, American Airlines, the Royal Caribbean cruise line and other organizations have also contributed to the aid effort.

Marvin Dames, security minister in the Bahamas, said authorities were striving to reach everyone, but the crews can’t just bulldoze their way through fallen trees and other rubble because there might be bodies not yet recovered.
