The family-owned company said they will work the Bahamian government and nonprofit partners to ensure the cash donation goes to communities that need it the most.

"We have never forgotten the incredible kindness of the Bahamian people and the important role they played in the history of our company," said Bacardi chairman Facundo Bacardi. "We hope in a small way to contribute to the rebuilding of this great country in the face of this tragedy just as the Bahamas helped Bacardi rebuild nearly 60 years ago."

"The Bahamas will seek extensive foreign government aid and it is urgently appealing for cash donations, with assistance coming from both the private and public sector."

I wouldn't give that government a single dime in cash. Clean water, sanitation, food, shelter, generators, medical assistance, of course. But not a dime in cash.
Unfortunately, I feel that way about most nonprofits. I’m still unsettled about the Red Cross’s handling of 911. They eventually took corrective action- but pretty much only after it became pretty clear that it would be the end of their existence if they didn’t. I don’t think it was moral compass kicking in- I think they saved their corporation & jobs. Haven’t donated there since. MOO

The United Nations, which estimated that 76,000 people are believed to be homeless or in need of assistance in the Bahamas, is providing 1,000 tarpaulins to replace roofs stripped from homes. The International Organization for Migration said 449 people are in nine emergency shelters in Abaco, with 346 survivors being temporarily housed in 17 shelters in Grand Bahama.

"The Bahamas – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution in the Bahamas due to crime. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assault, occurs even during the day and in tourist areas. Although the family islands are not crime-free, the vast majority of crime occurs on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. U.S. government personnel are not permitted to visit the area known by many visitors as the Sand Trap area in Nassau due to crime. Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercrafts are often not maintained, and many companies do not have safety certifications to operate in The Bahamas. Jet-ski operators have been known to commit sexual assaults against tourists. As a result, U.S. government personnel are not permitted to use jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands."

In fairness, most of the world is Level 2 for the same/similar reasons. Department of Homeland Security has an app that makes it easy to search. Very few Level 1 locations anymore, sadly.

As of 8 a.m. ADT, authorities were reporting nearly 390,000 properties in the dark in Nova Scotia and more than 55,000 in New Brunswick. An updated power outage total for P.E.I. was not available due to technical issues, but 50,000 properties in hat province had been without power on Saturday.

As the storm moved on from the Maritimes, attention was turning to assessment and cleanup. The hurricane centre said it had received reports of winds as strong as 144 km/h and rainfall totals as high as 150 mm in some areas.

Hey everyone! It's 6:56 AM here in Eastern Prince Edward Island. We made it through the night but it was pretty scary. Did a quick check out the windows and there is lots of debris around. Our house is fine inside but we don't feel safe going outside to check on things yet. It's still pretty stormy. The power company is sending crews out this morning to assess damage, and hopefully remove downed trees and fix poles and wires. I'm doing a lot better now there's a bit of daylight. I hope you all are doing well!
Happy to hear you are ok. I remember feeling the same with some hurricanes that moved across NJ, especially during the night. It's such a relief when morning comes, the wind stops howling and everything is (mostly) still intact. You weathered the worst of it, for sure. Hope you can relax a bit now.

Carnival Corporation’s philanthropic arm, Carnival Foundation, and its nine global cruise line brands together with the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation have pledged to donate $2 million in funding and in-kind support for relief efforts in The Bahamas. Carnival Foundation and the company’s nine cruise line brands, Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises (Australia) and P&O Cruises (UK), are pledging a total of $1 million in monetary and in-kind donations in support of immediate relief and recovery efforts in The Bahamas.

Carnival Corporation Chairman Micky Arison and his wife Madeleine are matching the corporation’s commitment with a $1 million donation from the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation. A portion of the combined pledge will immediately go to support efforts being managed by Direct Relief, an international humanitarian organization that provides critical medications and supplies during emergency situations.

After less than a week since the historic event, FCCA Member Lines have already committed more than $5 million in donations as well as support including delivering provisions and engaging the local communities to ascertain needs and how to best help.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), including Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, has relaunched Hope Starts Here, the company’s hurricane relief campaign in partnership with All Hands and Hearts, and pledged a minimum commitment of $1 million dollars toward immediate short-term relief for those affected by Hurricane Dorian. It has also vowed to match donations dollar-for-dollar to assist with rebuilding efforts across the Bahamas, including debris cleanup and removal, and the delivery of supplies and temporary shelters.

NCLH is also coordinating with local Bahamian authorities to bring needed provisions to the affected areas, “as quickly and as humanly possible.” Tomorrow, Norwegian Breakaway will depart Miami with hurricane relief supplies donated by NCLH and its employees, in addition to items collected by the City of Miami, Baptist Health South Florida, the 305 Gives Back foundation, and other Miami-based organizations, to be delivered to Nassau, Great Harbor Cay, the company’s private island Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. – including Azamara, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International – has committed $1 million to disaster relief for Hurricane Dorian, with an additional $100,000 to be donated by ITM Group, its partner in the Holistica joint venture that is developing the Grand Lucayan resort in Freeport, while also pledging to match donations by guests and employees to PADF and use its ships to deliver supplies such as generators, water, cleaning supplies, clean sheets and towels.

“The Bahamas has always been more than a destination for Royal Caribbean and our guests,” said the line in the announcement. “For more than half a century, we’ve made many friends and many memories. The Bahamas is also home to more than 500 of our colleagues who work at Perfect Day at CocoCay and the Grand Bahama Shipyard.”

The Walt Disney Company, led by Disney Cruise Line, has made a commitment of more than $1 million to help relief and recovery efforts in The Bahamas, including, but not limited to, a $1 million donation to non-profit relief agencies who will be undertaking recovery and rebuilding efforts, as well as the provision of supplies such as food staples and basic construction materials to those in impacted areas.

Additionally, Disney employees with immediate needs in The Bahamas will have access to a range of resources. Disney Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in The Bahamas, employs more than 60 Bahamians from Abaco and Grand Bahama, as well as several employees from other Bahamian islands.

“We stand with the Bahamian people,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Cruise Line. “As the needs in these communities are assessed, we are prepared to aid the relief and recovery efforts through funding, the provision of supplies and by providing support to our Bahamian Crew Members.”

MSC Group. One of the world’s leading container shipping and logistics conglomerates as well as the parent company of MSC Cruises has pledged support from across all its businesses for Hurricane Dorian relief in The Bahamas. In addition to providing and delivering goods of primary necessity, MSC Group’s efforts will initially focus on semi-permanent prefabricated modular housing for the population as well as making available MSC geared ships for cargo relief service from the U.S to the Bahamas.

A high-level delegation comprised of members of MSC Group’s U.S. senior management team as well as leadership of its philanthropic arm, the MSC Foundation, also scheduled meetings in Nassau with local officials, community leaders and key relief and recovery organizations. The objective, to promptly identify first-hand and through engagement with local officials, community leaders and key relief and recovery organizations, the most timely and urgent relief needs in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (BPCL) has announced a two-fold support initiative following Hurricane Dorian’s impact. The company is accepting monetary donations online through its partner, Mission Resolve, as well as donated supplies at its Riviera Beach warehouse.

“Our hearts go out to all of those impacted, and we felt it was imperative to issue a rapid response, demonstrating our support through action,” said Oneil Khosa, CEO of BPCL, who is engaged in direct communications with the Bahamian government, including Deputy Prime Minister Kevin Peter Turnquest, to determine specific areas of need and serve as a liaison for those looking to assist in the Hurricane Dorian recovery effort.

BPCL has also planned a humanitarian cruise on Grand Celebration, which will be loaded with food, water, and other supplies, as well as first responders and volunteers. Departing September 7, the ship will transport the supplies, volunteers and Bahamian residents who were stranded in South Florida with no cost for any volunteer or Bahamian resident, before its planned return with Bahamian residents who wish to evacuate to the U.S. and have proper documentation.

Hey guys. It's 2:20 AM here. This storm is no joke. I'm trying to sleep but it feels like the whole world is blowing around my house. It's an old house, but I can feel the wind coming through the walls. I don't think I was prepared for all the noise. We're sleeping downstairs tonight so that we are all together...and I don't know if it's my anxiety, but I'm afraid our roof might blow off. It seemed calm for a little while, but now it is worse than ever. Still no power, our well is on an electric pump so we have no water...but we picked up some water at the store a few days ago so that will be okay. Thanks for the news updates. Trying to get internet on my phone in the country is hard enough on a good day so it's nice to come and check in and read news updates all in one place. Take care everyone, will check in again when I can.
Oh, @pugmom. Your anxiety comes through your post. I'm so sorry this beastly storm came through at night; it's so unnerving. And yes, the noise - it's like nothing you've heard before and don't want to hear again. I hope it moves out of there quickly for you and that you all remain safe and well.

Hurricane Dorian: silence, devastation mark Bahamas town

  • #111
One silver lining has emerged in the wake of Hurricane Dorian's destruction in the Bahamas: Two university presidents—friends and former colleagues—have arranged for students at the devastated University of the Bahamas to attend Hampton University in Virginia tuition-free for a semester. As the New York Timesreports, William Harvey of Hampton called Rodney Smith of the University of the Bahamas to see how his friend had weathered the storm. And while Smith and his family were fine, his school was not. The next morning came Harvey's offer: Free room, board, and tuition for any of Smith's students for a semester, and the opportunity to stay on at regular rates after.

That adds up to $20,000 per student, and the Times notes that 22 had sounded interested within a day of the announcement. "Hampton has been the educational choice for many Bahamians over its long history," a Bahamas native and recent Hampton grad tells CNN, and he welcomes "this demonstration of kindness and humanity to my home in our time of need."

It's so good to hear from you this morning, @pugmom! I know last night must have been terrible. The National Guard is sending troops your way to clear the roads so that power companies can get to work. Please stay inside until you feel completely safe. The wind can gust out of nowhere for some time after the main storm passes. Glad you're okay!

The Norwegian energy firm said the size of the leak from the South Riding Point terminal is unclear, although satellite images show the onshore plume area being nearly a mile long.

Equinor said there are no indications of continued leaks from the tanks or of spills from the terminal to the sea or beaches, while further examination is underway.

The company first issued a statement on Thursday saying it had discovered the spill.

The terminal has a storage capacity of 6.75 million barrels of crude and condensate. At the time the hurricane hit 1.8 million barrels were stored in three tanks.

Resources are being mobilised as quickly as possible to safeguard people, the environment and the facility, the company said.

Totally agree, the only folks "going down there" are for rescue and humanitarian efforts.

I just can't believe they are encouraging tourism when people are dying. Its incomprehensible!!!!

I can. I've seen interviews with people who live on the islands who have said the same thing. It's their livelihood.

Thanks, and thanks for the update! We don't have a radio (adding that to the list for God forbid, next time) and the internet still isn't great on my phone...so we're kinda in the dark. Last night was terrible, never ever want to experience that again. It's still dreary and a bit windy but daylight makes a huge difference! Thanks for being "here" for me!

Freeport, Grand Bahama – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Exercise increased caution in Freeport, Grand Bahama due to Hurricane Dorian.

The Bahamas Travel Advisory
The rest of Bahamas still level 2 though.

This morning I’m just weighing it all in & trying to keep perspective. This is a story just beginning to unfold & I’m trying to temper my tendency to judge it by reminding myself there is MUCH we don’t know yet- and will not know for years, if ever.

I wish Bahamian officials had issued mandatory evacuations for everyone. With predicted category & known elevations, that should have been a no-brainer, moo. I wish they would have offered evacuations FREE. I know there is financial corruption in Bahamian government- been reading articles for years. But then I think about the vast levels of financial corruption here in USA & not sure we are much better- if at all. And am reminding myself that this is the first time ever that a hurricane of this caliber has ever hit there. And no one’s ever experienced a Cat 5 over their home for 2.5 days- anywhere. When it hasn’t happened before, response- both emergency & public communications- are going to be flawed & in need of learning & improvement. JMOO

I also do have compassion for the remaining islands of Bahamas. The only thing that could make this catastrophe even worse is if every family & business in the whole island chain goes bankrupt, can’t feed their family & crime gets worse.
Would I take my family there right now? Honestly no, because we stick to level 1 travel advisories as a rule- there are many areas within USA we will not go for safety. Others are not bothered by level 2 areas & feel ok about it. To each his own.

All I’m feeling this morning is to GET EVERYONE out of Abaco & GBI, sort the documentation issues later & asap, donate carefully, & hope these people- and the nation as a whole heal.

JMVHO
