God bless the Cajun Navy. They were awesome during Harvey.
(I’m sitting on my hands regarding those poor pets left behind) :(
Me too. I had tears welling up. Then slowly rolling down my face. I love animals. We have two dogs and two cats and all four own us. We love every minute of it.

I have captured several pictures of the effects
of Florence in my current area in Wilmington. I'd like to post them on my blog and then post the link here. Does anyone know if there is any rules regarding posting pics that have residential homes in the back ground? I made sure no house numbers or license plate numbers were present and will not disclose the exact location. It's mainly like a window in the background of a broken tree or the backyard view of a broken fence. I just wanted to know before I post it. The one I am mainly concerned about this is of a tree that fell on someone's car. I took a picture of the front of the car to avoid the licence number. And the other of concern is of a uprooted tree that stretches across two yards. Thank you in advance!

Normally blogs are not allowed, if I remember correctly. I hope they make an exception. I alerted on your post to ask a mod for confirmation before you do link to it. Hoping they can respond soon. How did your home fare?

Try posting the link....but before actually posting it, click options then preview to see if it comes up properly meaning without a bunch of ***********'s (that break the hyperlink), that means the link/blog is not allowed.

Thank you for sharing with us from your near point of view. I chuckled at your snake story. My Grandmother water skied into her 70's, deer hunted near Houghton Lake, Michigan into her early 90's (snow and cold too) but do not even say the word snake in her presence.

I would be freaking out hearing wind howling for hours loudly (residing in Florida) and asking please for umpteen stress relievers, enough to knock me out for a few days (I have panic attacks). Please take care. I'm so glad you cared about your pets even 3 fish. Be safe.

ETA: corrected number of fish from 1 to 3. p.s. It's hard pressing the "like" button.
Thank you for wishing me well! Thank you to the other person that did as well (I'm on mobile so I can't easily go back and get your username).

Storms give me panic attack like symptoms too! Like an 'out of my mind' cabin fever. Surprisingly I was unusually calm during this one. Strange, since storms 90% of the time gets in my head too much. The wind, also surprising, didn't really get to me (except for keeping me up from the noise the first night!) until the 3rd night when it tamed down a lot. I was reading in one room and had to abruptly leave. I suddenly heard this loud water spill sound behind my chair. I thought the roof had leaked but I couldn't find water any where. As I'm staring in that direction I started hearing this tapping sound in the exact spot where the blinds were bent back slightly on the window! I was spooked! The tap reminded me of the way an Aye-Aye's finger taps a tree (nothing like being bored and undersitmulated to bring out the crazy imaginations!)

Unfortunately you were right about one fish instead of three. I lost my two goldies :'( It was a tough call bringing my fish in the first place, but I couldn't bear thinking about leaving them alone in the house and then dying from starvation. They were stressed and slowly kept getting worse. The loud noises from the storm didn't help matters. It was so sad and I feel terrible. They were about two years old. The other fish, the Betta is doing really well. RIP Scully and Pebbles the Fantails.

Addressing the snake story, I'd like to meet a grandmother that likes snakes! I'm sure there is someone out there!

Thank you so much! The main reason I thought of linking my blog was to give access to all the pictures at once. I believe each post can only link four pictures at a time if I remember correctly. I took about 50+ photos.

And sometimes 3 days to fix a 3 hour repair if line were above ground. And flooding can do it's own unique damage to underground lines, depending on the weight of the standing water and the squishiness of the soil.

H. Katrina caused breaks in something like 30% of the city's water mains and lines. People came back from evacuating to $1800 water bills, because the line from the meter to the house broke from the weight of the flood water. People had to leave NOLA, as they could not have utilities reconnected until they paid 1000's of dollars for wasted water.

Al, you have been outstanding in the information you have been posting!!!!

I had some indication of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina but you have provided many details I was not aware of. It's been quite an eye opener.

Why on earth would the water company charge for that kind of water waste not caused by owner? It sounds like something to be waived, such as my tv cable company decreased my bill related to how many days I was without service during Hurricane Irma. No wonder so many more left the area.

Thank you so much for all your posts.

terrific

What I learned in Orville was amazing .

totally relevant with the disaster

flood control people are amazing

the science of it

they can control a lot of things

by that I mean they know exactly what is gonna happen and when and where

with rain ! Storm surge now is already in the calculations, so they know where all that water is gonna go when and how much

there are gates along the way down or up !

they know exactly how much water to release

at this point in time they know what the resultant level from storm surge is gonna move and how fast

they know that if they have to do a release

they select ahead of time what areas will flood

it kind like if we release the many cubic feet of water at this rate

then we will overtop at mile market (my term!) 8 but at mile marker 8 we have 100 homes that will flood while at mile marker 11 we have 12 so we will release a little less so that by wed that will overtop and flood out at mile 12

if a congressman lived at mile 14 they def would not flood out that area

if there are vast fields of bananas worth billions that comes into the planning

that is why this week we will see exact evacations of areas that will flood ecactly as promised

if the unknown happens a gate break a breach somewhere else a bridge collapsing blocking flow etc stuff can go out of control

its kinda like picking the best place to derail an out of control train

certainly not saying anything is not possible

but it is like a well coordinated evening of theatre!

there were hair raising moments during that month and half mess for sure--Orville)

it is really like selecting your least worse nightmare

areas with $850.000 homes compared to those worth 125000 - etc etc

as far as nuclear goes.......

we are at such risk (only a matter of when ) of actual just nuclear meltdown at one of nuclear plants right now it could happen anywhere

what our dear federal govt has been doing is just blowing it off

all plants have a expiration date - when get the age they are supposed to be decommissioned

what the power companies and the NRC do is fill out a bunch of paperwork that extends the life past the manufacture date

they come up with nonsense -- ok well put on some new tires that ought to get us another 40000 miles when the reality is the car is falling apart and the steering is about go out but that costs too much money so NRC rubber stamps the extension providing the tires are put on by the year 2023

back to our dam

here is damn now :

back to nuclear ( just the way the brain works sorry !)

,,,, majority of the 99 commercial nuclear reactors operating in the U.S. have sought and received permission by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to extend their licenses from 40 to 60 years.

kind of crazy," said Tyson Slocum, director of the energy program for the Washington-based watchdog group Public Citizen. "These facilities were not designed to operate that long. The longer you extend the operating life of these facilities the more things can go wrong."

This is stuff below is on plants that have already been extended past the manufacturer's design limits
Feb 21, 2018

Bloomberg -- The U.S. Energy Department is throwing its support behind a request by utilities to extend the life of some nuclear power reactors -- keeping them in operation for as long as 80 years.

An official with the department, who asked not to be named to discuss its decision-making process, said the agency was conducting research and working with utilities seeking permission from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to allow nuclear reactors built in the 1970s to keep operating to 2050 and beyond.

Already, the utilities Exelon, Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy have said they plan to ask regulators to extend 60-year licenses by 20 years for eight reactors in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Requests for as many as as 20 more are expected to follow, according to the nuclear industry.

How did your home fare?
My house was fine since it was on higher ground. We did lose the backdoor oning. It was a small metal one. Mainly we got fallen limbs and a lot of debris. At my grandmother's house she had a window leak in a upstairs bedroom and a gutter piece that flew off.
