Quake Jolts Hawaii as Hurricane Nears

HONOLULU (Aug. 14) - Hurricane Flossie was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane Tuesday but stayed on course to brush the Big Island, where schools were closed and residents were urged to stock up on food and water.

As if the storm wasn't enough, an 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolted the Big Island of Hawaii during the night.

The eye of the storm had maximum sustained wind of 110 mph, hurricane specialists noted in downgrading the storm from the earlier Category 3. It was expected to pass less than 100 miles from the islands, lashing the shores with strong wind and up to 10 inches of rain, meteorologists said.

The National Weather Service placed the Big Island under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning. A flash flood watch was also issued for the island through Wednesday.

They say the eye will pass roughly 60 miles South of the Big Island. Winds are to be only 50-60 miles per hour on the mainland. They said the rain should be welcome as Hawaii is experiencing a drought.

Aloha all!
So far all quiet on the eastern front..
Some sudden downpours not lingering and moving on quickly. The wind gusts have stopped.
Left work about 1000, called the feed store in town (30 miles away) to reserve a bag of dog food, they warned me that the store was closing early, at 1100 due to the storm. They agreed to hold a bag for me and I got there just in time.
Lots of stores closing or closed, same with gas stations. The mall looked like it was shut up tight and windows taped. The gas stations that were open not necessarily jammed but steadily busy. I topped off and ventured to Borders (I think), I never go in because the parking lot is always overflowing. I noticed the "starbuck" part of the store was dark and an annoucement confirmed that
"starbucks" area was closed and their products could not be purchased.
Grocery store next stop, for human essentials.
Same as the gas stations, steady, lines moving quickly, shelves well stocked. (Real time note, big rains now) I filled my basket and chatting with the cashier, she says today is steady and organized, but YESTERDAY was a mad house throughout the day and then after the earthquake the store got even more hectic. Unloading my cart quickly because that was my last stop in town and I wanted to get home! A young "bag-boy" came up to me sounding very concerned, " Ma'am no need to hurry, I am here to help you, relax!" I thought it was sweet of him to say something in such a caring way.
OK, so thats my update for now, local stations updating every hour on the hour and some of the waves are lookin big!
Aloha and thanks again for the interest.

Stay Safe from an old Florida Lady. Don't miss those storms since moving to Colorado. You seem to be prepared. Now just go home and hunker down. Report when you can.

Still quiet here, a few passing torrents, wind is calm and humid as heck.
When I was in town earlier, see my last post, I saw quite a few vehicles with surf and boogie boards heading towards the eastern beaches. Krazy Kids!!!
Also on the way home from town I stopped to fill water jugs at the county spigots, which I thought would be bombarded, but nope. Others must have done their stocking up earlier, so I filled em and got on my merry way.
Aloha.

Thank you Buzz! I think it will be a while before we know for sure where Dean is headed. I was freaking out for a little bit this morning but then I checked out some historical maps and I think we will be okay here. Of course, if it were my choice no one would have to worry.. I think we'll know more about Dean next week.

Aloha-I hope you are doing okay. I also hope those boogie boards and surf boards never make it into the water-that is a terrifying thought to me. It is entirely too dangerous for anyone to be out there right now!
Kind of off topic-isn't taping the windows completely useless?? It might keep the glass from going everywhere, but it's still going to break regardless of tape, right?

Thanks for asking! All back to "normal" here. The storm threat is over. The schools and some businesses are still closed. No reported damage from the hurricane on the news. We had a little shaker this morning, they say it's Pele, the volcano Godess, bidding farewell to Flossie.
About the tape, I am not quite sure why it's done. Saw quite a few windows boarded that seems the strongest way to protect windows and buildings. I didn't tape or board up my 6 sliders. I always thought just leaving them cracked a tad was the thing to do.
Hope everyone has a good day.

The tape simply prevents it from shattering all over.
Leaving them open a tad is really meant to avoid implosion from air pressure usually associated with tornadoes.
Never heard of that for a hurricane.
We have metal shutters that fit into a track over all of our windows.

Aloha girl I am glad to hear your doing ok:) I was thinking of you every time I read an update on the storm:)
