Hurricane Lane - Hawaii, August 2018

Weather Channel is reporting a brush fire on Maui...at least one woman suffered burns and was evacuated.

Downgraded to a Tropical Storm.

By the sounds of it this weather system has followed the usual pattern of storms declining in ferocity as they approach HI. One starts to appreciate why so few hurricanes (or should they be termed typhoons since we're talking about the Pacific?) hit the islands.

So far the Atlantic hurricane season has been remarkably quiet.

They did a segment on the Weather Channel explaining why Lane was a hurricane, not a typhoon. Also, I found this:

It is not until you head much farther west in the Pacific where such storms are called "typhoons".

Is Lane a hurricane? Or a typhoon? Or a cyclone?
