All the more amazing that the store in Islamorada still has power!

My photog and I are watching him, but if he goes down, there's no lifeguard.

UPDATE: a man's dog ran into the water to try and save the surfer. Poor baby doesn't realize he went out there on his own merit.

The wind is so strong, I can barely stand or open the car door. #HurricaneIrma

Was able to fall asleep with hubby's arms around me last night - I need to get dressed - windy and raining out and the lights just flickered....

I'm sure they are running on a back-up generator.

I don't think they are. Video Guy said there was no back-up generator at the store, that they still had power.

I'm really surprised by how little Irma has moved overnight.

Hi guys. I'm from the Miami area but made it to Charlotte NC. I drove 36 hours in bumper to bumper traffic. I'm still having nightmares from leaving for real. This is nuts. Worried about people and family on West Coast. Then my home being under water when I get back. I'm so glad to know this thread is here, thanks to Bird of Paradise. I will check in and see everyone else status now I can see the list. It's so nerve racking. I really think this one did me in and don't want to return even if my place is ok.

It is going to be such a sad scene when this is over. I don't blame you for feeling so stressed, her. Life has been turned topsy -turvy for sure. I wish I had encouraging words for you. But we are here to surround you with love and hope and compassionate care.=, the best we can. :grouphug:

So what comes after TERRIFIED? Hernando here, I saw the update last night, and this is even worse for our West Coast than it was before. Still confident we will be fine, just worried for the entire state and our West coast. It is very calm here, no wind, and muggy. Very quiet. I have been here long enough and many storms to know why this is. So hugs guys!

Skully, I don't even know what I can say to you. I hope you made the right decision, but I am so stressed for you. I cannot imagine what it must be like, nor how you can get through this intact. You stay safe and be smart and aware. I hope you survive on little sleep --- I cannot imagine falling asleep, to be woke by devastation. Wear clean undies ... you never know where you may end up --- up a palm tree, perhaps?

I missed the "end", heard a bit of audio of them asking if they were alright, what happened?

I missed it as well. Firefox kept freezing - too many windows open I guess.

I'm really surprised by how little Irma has moved overnight.

We I went to bed late last night she was moving at 4 mph, this morning she is moving NNW at 8 mph.

My sister in Houston lives off of FM 1960 in Champion Forrest did not flood but couldn't get out of her neighborhood for a few days. I have a brother in Victoria, Texas. Both had vacation homes on the coast with minimal damage from Harvey. Have a granddaughter at Ft. Hood, Texas.

I posted here on WS in 2008 about my brother in Pinellas County on the waterway. I have a niece in Big Pine Key, Florida. She went up to my brother's and now the hurricane is to be bad there also!

I'm in Louisiana where bad weather inevitably happens frequently.

I think my whole family needs to just move to Alaska or somewhere. We are all emotionally exhausted from worrying about each other. I'm worried about my brother and my niece because they did not evacuate and are in a condo on the second floor of the building. As long as they have their beer, rum, and their Jimmy Buffet music, they are happy campers. I just talked to them a little while ago and told them to let me and the rest of the family know if they survive. I was being only a tiny bit sarcastic. I'm more worried than they are.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the path of Hurricane Irma. Take care all of you!

*I almost didn't post on this thread except to say my thoughts and prayers are with all Floridians. What are the odds of having family in both Harvey and Hurricane Irma?? I'm moving to Alaska. I mean it!

Maybe my Michigan is better .... we get all kinds of weather, but never have had anything close to this! These storms (that isn't even a strong enough word, but what I want to use would be bleeped out) have affected everyone is some way .... whether by only watching and holding our breath for those we know in the area affected or by actually being there.

LaLaw, you are welcome to keep coming eureka and posting. I hope your family is able to check in with you once these move out of their area. What a nightmare this is for all.

[h=1]Some insist on riding out Irma at home[/h]
Carl Roberts has Chinese food, a case of water and a million-dollar view in his 17th floor Gulf front condo – all he needs, he says, to weather the massive storm coming straight at him.

oh lord

The media certainly has picked up quite a few instances of people riding out the storm. I suppose that it is because of the human interest element, but it's not helpful, imo. I suspect that there will be some people who will not protect their lives, because they see instances of others with similar poor judgement.

There are plenty of genuine cases where people simply cannot get out of harm's way. There is no need to bring attention to those who choose to stay because of some misguided thoughts of glory.
