Hey My Florida Friends...I agree with Cariis, not much good about today except you are alive and can read this post. [emoji4]

NHC advisory at 8:00 hasn't changed much overnight. The storm is currently running a tick east of the forecast.

See next post with GFS model that it's currently running on.

(Which barrier island is atasteofhoney on? Is she hunkering down?)

'ATasteOfHoney' posted back there in the thread somewhere that she was near CARIIS now, which is in the Orlando area. Orlando is not out of the woods by any stretch, but it seems like a much better decision to go there than to have stayed on the island.

Hopefully, both of them and everyone else will ride this out safely.

Though there are many of us who are not in Irma's path, we all feel deep care and concern for those who are. Especially our WS 'family.'

I couldn't be here last evening, but definitely was in spirit. Worrying for anyone in harm's way.

I can't begin to imagine the anxiety they must be experiencing. I hope they will all check in when they can and keep us posted. They have many friends here they've never even 'met.'

Some insist on riding out Irma at home

Carl Roberts has Chinese food, a case of water and a million-dollar view in his 17th floor Gulf front condo – all he needs, he says, to weather the massive storm coming straight at him.

oh lord

I cannot be paid to live on beachfront property. Good luck to that guy.

GFS 6:00 model run showing the storm movements forecasted across FL into GA today through Monday 6ISH PM.

The fact the eye appears still intact in GA shows the intense power of this storm.

Hurricane Irma Makes Landfall on Florida Keys

by Saphora Smith and Kalhan Rosenblatt

Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida on Sunday, raking the lower Florida Keys with 130 mph and soaking the southern part of the state with torrential rains.

Irma touched ground in Cudjoe Key at 9:10 a.m., the National Hurricane Center reported.

The system, which has already knocked out power to almost 500,000 customers across the state, was expected to churn-up life-threatening storm surges of up to 15 feet along parts of southwestern Florida and on other parts of the coast, forecasters warned.

Storm surges were beginning to impact Key West just before 4 a.m. ET Sunday, with water levels already two feet above normal.

"Life-threatening storm surge is occurring now in the Keys and is expected to begin this morning in Southwest Florida," Florida Gov. Rick Scott tweeted early Sunday.

More than 490,000 customers were without power in Florida early Sunday, according to utility companies including Florida Power & Light...

Did you check if she is in a flood zone?

Here is the Charlotte County emergency management page: https://www.charlottecountyfl.gov/services/emergencymgmt/Pages/default.aspx

It broke my heart last night reading stories of the elderly trying to flee to Germain Arena, the shelter of last resort.

Your mom is in my prayers.

Thank you Jersey Girl. My mom is in Zone B and had mandatory evacuation (which she refused) yesterday. I really appreciate your prayers. Yes, there are several other elderly in her building who did not go to the shelter. Does anyone know where the best place to ride out the storm is: bathroom or closet? When I last spoke with her she was insisting on closet.

That wind is really whistling now and getting stronger.

And I have Elvenking playing on Youtube (seems appropriate for this weather):

The latest forecasts project Irma will hug Florida's western coast off Fort Myers through the day Sunday, with the eye wall reaching the Tampa Bay area by the end of the day.

It's not just about Irma's eye. Hurricane force winds will cover the entire state. @FoxNews pic.twitter.com/xoxk1HTWNu

Interior room with NO windows is best. My hidey hole is a walk-in-closet. moo

Some areas of Jacksonville (extreme north east Florida) have had 5 inches of rain over the last 24 hours. My gauge shows "only" 2 inches.

As this Hurricane makes landfall on the keys my thoughts keep going to the Hemingway house where all those 55 cats are. I feel so bad for them. :(

I just visited the Hemingway cats in April. I really believe they are in the best place to survive. I watched a program where the caretaker explained how it's the safest building and 18 ft above sea level. Several caretakers are with them and brought them inside. They will go to top level and hide. Prayers for all the animals in the path.

Does her building have multiple stories or one level? Made of concrete, brick?

Most importantly, she needs to stay away from any windows, especially if there weren't boarded up or have hurricane shutters.

I guess some people have to experience it to respect it. Hope he lives through it.

Yes, the building is on the highest plot of land on Key West, 18 feet above sea level.

Anyone out there from Port Charlotte area? My mom refused to evacuate and now I can't reach her by phone. So frustrating. She also was unable to get water(sold out) but reassured me she bought Sprite since it's also clear liquid. (!) Dear God. She is elderly and not in best shape. She wouldn't go to shelter even though she went through Charlie and barely survived. At least my brother was with her then but has since passed away. She said if it's her time so be it. Very upsetting. TIA for any info.

Is your mom totally alone, or is someone at least near her? This has to be so very scary for you. I hope and pray it turns out all right for your mom.

This is the latest I could find quickly for Port Charlotte, , recently updated Iprobable power outages):

Because of the hurricane's sheer size and magnitude, Charlotte will not escape at least some impact from the storm.
The threats remain for very heavy rain, gusty winds over 30 mph and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. Due to the aging Charlotte tree canopy, it is reasonable to assume that there will be some downed trees.

However, coastal flooding will threaten both sides of the coast as a storm surge is expected to slam Tampa Bay, Miami and Melbourne. Some of the highest surge will affect Naples, Bonita Springs, Port Charlotte and Fort Myers.

We have a small walk-in closet right in the center of our apartment - it's where the water heater is. We cleaned it out two days ago, picked up some things off the floor and onto the high shelf inside the closet.

My folks are in South GA in transition of cat3 to cat2 in a house with no plywood or hurricane shutters. They still are saying it's not coming their way. They've had 3 days to prepare and they "think" they are.

The only thing we are truly 100% accountable for is our life. I can't make them do anything. I hate that they will experience the terror that I've experienced before.

Once you experience it, you will respect it and do everything in your power to never experience it again.

I hope you are all prepared and safe, my friends.
