My heart goes out to all. Please stay safe. Absolutely devastating to read of the destruction thus far.

So sad :( DH and I have visited St.Maarten/St. Martin many times on cruises. Such a beautiful island. So many memories. :(

Antigua & Barbuda's PM Browne: "#Barbuda's communication network is 100% destroyed"

All radio communications from St Maarten are now down as Irma barrels across the northern Caribbean

I was following several msm and a couple of private accounts last night. Between 12 and 17 hours ago they stopped tweeting as Irma passed through. Barbuda went first, then St. Maarten.

Was quite eery as we've never lost 100% communication here in the U.S. Food for thought...

Anyone here familiar with spaghettimodels.com? Lots of great info there on Irma.

We live about 2 miles directly east from the Gulf - no evacuation orders yet for Sarasota or Manatee Counties yet though I imagine the islands (Siesta Key, Casey Key near Nokomis, Longboat Key, et al) will probably be the first to evacuate.

This hurricane is getting a little too close for my comfort...

We are in Canada but sold condo in Bahamas after Matthew. Felt terrible as Port Lucaya area just doesn't bounce and rebuild as other more popular Islands. Crime rate was way up and the last winter we spent time there before Matthew there were 3 break ins despite a gated community. We loved the quiet and tranquility. So many of these Islands rely on the tourist industry. Sooo very sad. Not to diminish what Texas, Florida and other States may experience.

See 5/6:00 pm models. GFS is consistent with noon version. The eye crosses land in South FL and between Savannah and Charleston for a second landfall.

The noon EURO model is fairly consistent with GFS only a tick west.

Clearly the message from NHC (National Hurricane Center) as demonstrated from the large cone of uncertainty, Irma has not communicated her path. ANYONE in the cone should stay vigilant and prepared as we wait for more convincing data of her true intentions.

Can I ask why you have a fear? Dont go in hurricane season of course but otherwise the Islands are beautiful. Seems many will need to rebuild. Now.

Oh goodness, we have close family members in Savannah too. I think I will go call them now and ask them are they going to evacuate to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the update, Henry.
Hi Ocean- your welcome. Hope they are safe and prepared.

We are in south Georgia (Lee County) put our local officials have been advising us since Monday to be prepared for we will have some affects from this hurricane. We are about 150 miles away from the east coast and about 90 miles from the Florida Gulf. I am extremely worried for all of my family who lives here. We have suffered damage before from Hurricanes coming in from the Atlantic or Gulf when the swath of the hurricane was vast, like Irma. I have seen some of the string models showing it can hit around Jacksonville and then come right up into the area where we live.

Also, as you and I discussed previously, one of our daughters, hubby and two grandchildren live right outside of Charleston. They are watching the reports closely and told us they will most likely start trying to come to our area on Friday or even tomorrow to beat the traffic which is more inland since they live so close to the beach in SC. The last time they had to do this it took them hours and hours to get here due to the traffic being backed up for miles on end.

One of our other daughters and granddaughter both live in the Mexico Beach area of Florida. They have already boarded both of their homes up and are also coming to stay with family in Georgia.

I am praying for everyone who may be in Irma's path. Please be safe and heed the warnings of federal, state, and local officials. Irma is going to be very unforgiving once she hits us I am afraid. :(

Hi Ocean- I grew up in Valdosta....neighbor. [emoji3] no evacuation orders yet in South Carolina. I think they are having great difficulty figuring out where to issue it. Hope your family is safe and we get some good data soon for decisions to be made. I'm also hoping she takes a faster downgrade than the models show.

One of my fellow employees at work goes down to Bonaire every year in late November - long after hurricane season - to go scuba diving. He's been scuba diving since his early teens. He is also a native Floridian, born and raised here, went to college, etc.

Like Bravo said, there is nothing wrong with visiting the Caribbean islands - many are very beautiful though I've never been to them. You just need to go at the right time of the year.

My brother went to Saint Martin a few years ago on business - he loved it - I suspect he is pretty sad with the devastation Irma caused :(
