Tropical Tidbits

Hurricane #Isaias is nearing landfall in North Carolina, having gained some strength today. Dangerous winds, storm surge, and flash flooding are expected from the Carolinas northward into the Mid-Atlantic tonight and Tuesday.

Due to travel there will be no video update tonight, but at this point the best information you can get is from your local NWS offices and county officials regarding hazards in your local area. Stay safe all.

Radar velocities as Isaias nears landfall

A swath of ferocious winds, possibly gusting over 100 mph (purple colors) is nearing Wilmington, NC and the coastline surrounding Cape Fear very quickly. Do *not* be outside.

Right where my friend lives, in Elizabethtown. I still remember the results of Florence back in 2018...

“There is reported flooding in coastal Grand Strand communities as Hurricane Isaias passes over the area Monday night.

There are flooded roads in North Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Surfside Beach and Myrtle Beach from the rain dumped on the area from the storm. Areas of Cherry Grove were seeing some of the worst flooding. Raymond Dennis lives on 29th Avenue North and estimated the water is about 4 feet high.

“There’s waves of water. You got some trees down,” he said.

The flooding is some of the worst in the last 30 years and the most damaging since Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Dennis said.”

It is doing it’s thing all the way up the coast and inland. That upper right quadrant is powerful. My aunt and uncle left Sebastian, FL this morning to make their way back to NH. They said they feel like storm chasers! They are very cautious and will be fine I’m sure. They’re in a crossover type vehicle so they should be fine. They’ll probably stop somewhere in GA for the night.

Isaias hurled sustained winds of 85 mph and became a Category 1 hurricane before reaching land around 11:10 p.m. ET near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, the National Hurricane Center said.

Howling wind and water washing across in "one to two foot swells" closed a bridge Monday night in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, the Sunset Beach Police said on Facebook. Streets in Holden Beach became rivers as water quickly rose, Jessi Viox told CNN.

Brunswick County, North Carolina, reported "numerous calls" for water rescues, structural fires, structural collapses and people trapped in flooding houses," Oak Island Water Rescue said on Facebook.

The system could bring the strongest winds to New York City since Superstorm Sandy almost eight years ago, said Ross Dickman, the meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service office in New York.

So sad when it blows thru at night. No one can see anything and the sounds are horrible.

At least one person dead, more missing after tornado triggered by Isaias hits North Carolina trailer park

Bertie County Commissioner Ronald Wesson told ABC 11 another 20 people were injured in the tornado, which struck just after 1 a.m., and three more remained missing Tuesday morning.

At least 10 mobile homes were destroyed in the early morning weather. Trees were downed in the area, including one that smashed into a residence, and vehicles were flipped over in the streets in wake of the tornado, said Bertie County Sheriff John Holley, who described the scene as one of the worst he has ever seen.

WINDSOR, N.C. — Two people were killed and two children remain unaccounted for after a tornado hit a neighborhood in Bertie County early Tuesday.

Sheriff John Holley said the damage is the worst he's seen in the 38 years he has worked at the Bertie County Sheriff's Office.

"It's bad," Holley told WRAL News. "It doesn't look real. It looks like something on TV. Nothing is there."

The winds didn’t ruin us in Sandy, it was the full moon, high tide, and storm surge from her slamming onshore as a “superstorm” she wasn’t even a Hurricane when she made landfall in NJ. Winds in NYC high rises need to be aware.

A gust during Sandy was clocked at 90 mph near me in Seaside Park. I have the paperwork that I needed for when we filed a claim.
Hurricane Isaias made landfall at 85 mph in Ocean Isle Beach fifteen miles from my home and made its way up the east coast creating much damage and carnage. Storm surge was way more than expected due to a high tide and a full moon. I was lucky, tree debris and power loss. There were many tornadoes spun out of this storm as it approached. Much damage at the beaches and curfew is in place.
During the hurricane over seven homes burned to the ground at Ocean Isle beach and an apartment building burned as well resulting in First Responders rescuing people during the brunt of the storm.

I wonder what caused the fires. The article I read didn't say. Storm sparked fires, caused flooding as it came ashore at Ocean Isle Beach :: WRAL.com

You are fortunate that your home wasn't damaged. Hope you get power back soon.

Happy to hear you’re ok! I read somewhere that there were more tornadoes as a result of this hurricane. That means more lightening strikes which means more fires. High tide and a full moon just added to that I guess.
