Hurricane Nate - October 2017

Well this is weird. I think this should be peak storm for us here in Mercia. Not a lot of wind but the sky is a completly flat yellowish grey and the sun is the strangest vermillion-to-crimson red. I tried to take a photo but just can't capture the colour.

Can your Irish relatives evacuate?

Can your Irish relatives evacuate?

I suppose they could, but my partner's uncle is a retired Gard (cop) so I suspect he'll have stayed to help out his neighbours. SW Ireland is used to Atlantic storms, even if this one is worse than the others in recent years, so the locals are probably well used to battening down the hatches.

I looked for a thread on this Ophelia, but only found one for 2005.

Ophelia is affecting Ireland. Thousands without power. There is a good update here:
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-41627442
The Irish Republic's Met Eireann said the storm is forecast to travel north over western parts of Ireland, with "violent and destructive gusts" of 75mph to 93mph (120 km/h to 150km/h) expected countrywide.
The Met Office said there was a "good chance" Northern Ireland could be hit on Monday afternoon by power cuts, flying debris, large waves in coastal areas and disruption to all travel services.
In England, three flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected - have been issued in the South West, and there are 13 flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - across other parts of the country.

People on the south coast have been seemingly experiencing it most of this morning, although it has since spread up north.
The south west, including Devon, Cornwall, Bristol and Somerset seem to be the most affected by the weird weather phenomenon.

There are quite a lot of photos of this from around the country on the BBC news website.

:tears: If I am having trouble fathoming all of this, I cannot imagine being in the paths of this type of storm. This is really blowing my comprehension. So glad for updates and personal experiences here.

Your red sky, Melmoth, reminds me of our green sky just before we had a rare/unusual tornado years ago. You never forget it. Stay well, my friend.

Sorry to deliver this message....all the major models position another cat2 same path, next weekend 10/21. They are flowing with the jet stream.

Never a lack of tension around here. Egads, Henry .... either I have never paid enough attention before, or this year is entirely out of control. Just unbelievable to my frail mind.

Spell, I think it's the latter.....completely out of control. May surpass 2005....can't wait for December.

The flood maps were just redrawn for my area. I received a notice that I've gone from be ing assigned a "Special High Risk" for flood insurance to a much more reasonable "Preferred Risk".

Hurry up December

What does that mean for you? Are you required to carry flood insurance? The way this year has gone, we all may need it. Preferred or Special, either sounds worrisome to me. But I don’t live in a flood zone (though our small river has come to within a street from my home a couple times in my 20 years here, and it is down the street about 3 blocks.

Special high risk vs preferred risk is significant insurance terms. It means my flood insurance will be cut in half $$$

The reason for this is that although I could throw a seashell into the Atlantic Ocean from my house, they realize that the gulfstream currents combined with a deep, defensive ocean shelf make my home a reduced risk for flooding. The gulfstream being so close allows for water to continually move. Hurricane Irma & all those before it has proven it.
Wind risk is another story but I’ m not obligated to carry that.
