Hurricane Rita thread

some Evacuation times:

leave Seabrook Wednesday AM - 12 hours to Dallas

leave Friendswood Wednesday PM - 12 hours to Conroe

leave Texas City Wednesday PM - 13 hours to Jersey Village

you have to see it to believe it... the bumper to bumper rarely moving traffic, on the major freeways out of Houston, TX this afternoon and tonight...I've been thru 'canes and 'storms on the Gulf Coast for 35 years, never seen anything like this.

vehicles running out of gas on the road, service stations have no gas, vehicles overheating, it's a mess...we filmed/timed one pickup truck that moved 4 car lengths in an hour on Hwy290 @ Tidwell last hour.

The news is *guesstimating* $5.00 per gallon! Maybe $3.00 per doesn't look so bad after all. :waitasec:

Which in turn raises the price for all consumer goods. This is going to send our economy into a tailspin.

My family is safe in a nice hotel in Dallas. They even allowed the dog to stay! (Poor other occupants. "Sassy" barks at ANYTHING!)

Above all, I'm praying for the safety of our fellow Americans. This is soooo scary. I hope Rita loses her strength.

Stupid, stupid people!!!!!

Snipped from the AP:

Jennifer McDonald in Galveston planned to ride Rita out. She and her husband have enough food and water to last 10 days in their wooden house. If it gets really bad, the couple will take to the roof. "If it goes, it goes," the 42-year-old nurse said of the house. "We're completely prepared."

Yeah, good luck on the roof in 175-200 mph winds, babe, with a 25 foot storm surge beneath you.

They will almost certainly be among the dead. I just cannot comprehend their logic! They think it will be flooding like Katrina and they'll be partying on the roof, or something. Guess they didn't see the utter wind destruction from Katrina. And, like you said, a wooden house??? Mmmmm hmmmmm.

Just like Katrina, this is the equivalant of a 75-100 mile wide F3 tornado coming through.

  • #449
My thought and prayers are with Texas right now. Please leave now if you are on the TX coast, this is nothing to play around with . They say it will have a surge of 28 ft. I hate to even think about it, but I think Katrina will be outdone and that is scary.

Important question, HOW are we gonna be able to afford THIS recovery effort? People gave huge amounts for Katrina, and the feds are gonna try and foot to $200 billion bill, as well. Were will we get the money for the people devastated by THIS storm, now? Plus Iraq, etc.

At work, we talked like we're headed for a major recession or even depression. How can we afford all of this??????

You have to have faith DK. We'll get through this. I am just glad to see the Texans reacting with good sense.I think they need to re examine how much they were planning on spending on NO and spread those funds around. Those of us still safe in our homes with decent incomes are going to just have to keep contributing to help.

Be sure that you listen to the news...They are closing down some of the roads leading INTO Houston to make way for traffic going OUT of Houston.

Yeah...doesn't matter now....they aren't able to get out. Even at 4 am it wasn't possible.

Everyone just hunker down!!!!

They just talked to guy on the news who is driving out of Houston. He's gone 48 miles in 13 hours...OMG

Our swingset...all wood...we are going to put between the house and our fence.......any suggestions are great......
FWIW - Mr tipper was in FL a couple years ago when a hurricane was on its way and was interested to see the hotel people dropping all the outdoor chairs into the pool. Do you have a pool?

The food and water may last 10 days, but the house…it's gonna go, lady!!! .

"We're completely prepared." Prepared for what? To meet their maker?

Update: I'm watching CNN (Daryn Kagen) The MacDonalds have decided to evacuate. When asked what changed their mind, Jennifer said, "Death!"

Yea!   She grew a brain overnight! Hope it's not to late!

I can't imagine those 100's of thousands of people who are on the highways, stuck in traffic, trying to flee Rita. What a nightmare all the way around. I'm going to light a candle for everyone, especially our own WS'ers who are in the path of Rita. My prayers are with everyone.

Did you see the people pushing their cars to save gas? (It's going that slow.)

Theme song of the day should be: :boohoo: "Walking to New Orleans". :boohoo: :D (As if New Orleans were still there. )
