If they walked they could improve their distance by about 700%. In 24 hours they could get about 70 miles further North.

HAHAHAHA, I can see it now, everyone abandons their cars and gets out and starts to walk......

Hey Buzz OT but there is a long white streak of light in the sky here in Socal..any idea how I can find out what it is? It's wild!

My son can see it in San Diego too. Looks like a rocket

This is so weird to be watching this on tv and writting about the storm. I am usually one of the people out there on the road. Now I know what everyone else was doing when I was riding and riding and riding at 10 miles an hour.

The only thing, barring a meteor, I can think of, would be a missile launch of some type, but I can't think of anything that flies that way. How is it oriented North to South???

The horse idea is starting to get tempting.

I bet many of these evacuees are mighty sick of this slow travel by now. Someone asked about how these travelers are going to go tp the bathroom on this exedus!

Remember Tylin? In honor of her memory as a poster here, I think she would say that every passenger in every car would have their own plastic quart bottle to go Pee. LOL

Other than that I don't know, but I know I wouldn't be able to walk a mile when I had to 'go', to get to the bathroom!

Part of the missile defense system occasionally flies out of Vandenburg, out into the Pacific, across the Marshall Islands where an intercept will be attempted. You might be able to read if it was a hit--they haven't been too successful lately, so they will probably publicize a hit. This would be a daylight intercept, which is a step in the right direction.

I wonder what the real speed is - I know some people have successfully evacuated who post here or know someone who posts here - how long did it really take to get out? I know about the people on the news - but people exaggerate for the cameras, or neglect to mention that they tried a shortcut and it failed and had to backtrack, or that they spent 2 hours at dinner, etc. Given the speeds people are quoting, no one would get out - but people are getting out.

Thanks .I'm hearing it is a missile out of edwards..it is incredible..sorry for the OT all.

eta; did look like it was heading for the ocean. I could see what looked like a rocket or something very clearly. kind of a north to south arc

I've never had a problem. Sometimes, being a guy, has its advantages. A folded 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper, and we're all ready to go.

It may be heading out over the Pacific heading towards the Marshall Islands. It would probably look North South to you, just because of the distance, and altitude--they fly much, much, higher than aircraft.

Category Five Hurricane:
Winds greater than 155 mph
(135 kt or 249 km/hr). Storm surge generally greater than 18 ft above normal. Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. All shrubs, trees, and signs blown down. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Severe and extensive window and door damage. Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of all structures located less than 15 ft above sea level and within 500 yards of the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas on low ground within 5-10 miles (8-16 km) of the shoreline may be required. Only 3 Category Five Hurricanes have made landfall in the United States since records began: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, Hurricane Camille (1969), and Hurricane Andrew in August, 1992. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane struck the Florida Keys with a minimum pressure of 892 mb--the lowest pressure ever observed in the United States. Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast causing a 25-foot storm surge, which inundated Pass Christian. Hurricane Andrew of 1992 made landfall over southern Miami-Dade County, Florida causing 26.5 billion dollars in losses--the costliest hurricane on record. In addition, Hurricane Gilbert of 1988 was a Category Five hurricane at peak intensity and is the strongest Atlantic tropical cyclone on record with a minimum pressure of 888 mb.

Size Comparison

KATRINA
Wind Speed at Landfall, 140mph-----Maiximum Wind Speed, 175mph
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND 105 MILES FROM THE CENTER...
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 230 MILES.
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...923 MB. (at landfall) 902 MB (at its lowest)

RITA

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND 60 MILES FROM THE CENTER
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 205 MILES.
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...917 MB. (presently) 897 MB (at its lowest)
This is the 3rd lowest pressure on record-- Gilbert 888 MB, 1935 LABOR DAY 892 MB

The record low central pressure ever, for a hurricane IN the U.S., is 892 MB (the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane).

OT:

(CBS 5 NEWS) - Vandenberg Air Force Base in California gave the valley quite a show Thursday night when they launched a test missile.

The base does frequent testing, but it is usally done during daylight, so it's not noticeable. The missile launched at 7:20 p.m.

This carries the REB which will be released over the Marshall Islands, to be intercepted by the interceptor missile launched, probably from Meck Island (one of the Marshall Islands)..

Rocket Carrying Military Satellite Launches

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE - A rocket carrying a military research satellite blasted off Thursday, dazzling spectators from California to Arizona with a rainbow of colors as it streaked across the sky at dusk

My best friends have been on the road for more than 24 hours. They still are not to Austin. We just taked to them about an hour ago. No exaggeration.

Weird is right, Beyond Belief! <LOL> I was just thinking those exact same thoughts when I saw your post.

Just a year ago (doesn't seem nearly that long!) we were hunkering down or evacuating in advance of Charlie, Frances & Jean. 3 brutal hurricanes in a 6 week period that each wreaked some punishing damage to our home, trees, property & so much of Central Florida. Being without *power* (air conditioning, especially!) was the worst part for me. Everything else I could handle as we were pretty well prepared.

Like you, BB - someone who has *been there, done that* and know how it feels to be in a hurricane's path .. my heart really goes out to everyone in Texas & Louisiana. This is another massive & dangerous one - unlike anything I've ever experienced in Florida.

I'm saying "big time prayers" for all you Texas folks!!! Please be smart n' Stay SAFE! :blowkiss:
