Dozens of blocks in the Ninth Ward (search) were under water as a waterfall at least 30 feet wide poured over and through a dike that had been used to patch breaks in the Industrial Canal (search) levee. On the street that runs parallel to the canal, the water ran waist-deep and was rising fast. Guidry said water was rising about three inches a minute

Rita Heads for Upper Texas-Louisiana Coast

HOUSTON - Hurricane Rita roared toward the Texas and Louisiana coast with 135 mph winds Friday, creating monumental traffic jams along evacuation routes and raising fears of a crippling blow to the nation's oil-refining industry. "We're going to get through this," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said. "Say a prayer for Texas."

The storm was expected to come ashore early Saturday along the upper Texas-Louisiana coast on a course that could spare Houston and Galveston a direct hit. But Rita could plow into the oil and chemical centers of Beaumont and Port Arthur, about 75 miles east of Houston.

My friend's family have a home outside of the Ville Platte area. There is a very large parcel of property nearby which FEMA wants to turn into a gigantic trailer park---200 FEMA trailers would be parked there--to house Katrina evacuees from New Orleans.

NOBODY is happy about it. Residents are protesting loudly, but I think it's a done deal.

What happened---everyone else must have decided to stay??? I think the Galveston/Houston areas are beginning to feel as if the worse will miss them. Can you imagine some of those people who spent 15 hours, or so, on the road getting out of that area, only to find out the major part of the storm will probably miss that area.

Surely FEMA is paying your friend's family for the use of their property. FEMA throws money around like water during these disasters. It will probably be a windfall for your friend's family.

When they brought them to Fl. they put the trailers right on the property next to the unlivable house. People lived in them until the houses were fixed which seems like it was June when the blue tarps started coming off.

I don't think they need to worry about people staying too long in those trailers. If HUD gets it act together, they'll help them get homes.

Category Three Hurricane:
Winds 111-130 mph
(96-113 kt or 178-209 km/hr). Storm surge generally 9-12 ft above normal. Some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings with a minor amount of curtainwall failures. Damage to shrubbery and trees with foliage blown off trees and large trees blown down. Mobile homes and poorly constructed signs are destroyed. Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Flooding near the coast destroys smaller structures with larger structures damaged by battering from floating debris. Terrain continuously lower than 5 ft above mean sea level may be flooded inland 8 miles (13 km) or more. Evacuation of low-lying residences with several blocks of the shoreline may be required. Hurricanes Jeanne and Ivan of 2004 were Category Three hurricanes when they made landfall in Florida and in Alabama, respectively.

NIMBY's drive me nuts. It's temporary, these people need somewhere to live for a fairly long time (especially with renewed flooding in NO) - yeesh!

In Texas, the storm would cause a "catastrophic flood" likely to inundate the city of Port Arthur under an 18- to 22-foot (6- to 7- meter) storm surge, said Jack Colley, the director of the Texas Division of Emergency Management. It would affect 5.2 million Texans, destroy 6,000 homes and have an initial economic impact of $8.2 billion, he said.

He predicted 16 hours of hurricane-force winds where the storm hits, as well as an onslaught of medium-sized tornadoes.

It still looks like the great big scary thing I saw the other day. I did see the eye zooming in and out and the red stuff not so prominent.

  • #675
It looks a lot better than 2 days ago. The eyewall is definitely breaking up. I think it has one more patch of warm water before it gets into the cooler water but I am not sure.

But, wasn't Katrina a 3 when she made landfall? I keep thinking about the quote, "Instead of feeling like you were hit by a freight train, you'll feel like you were hit by a semi-truck." (But, it has to be better than a 4 or 5.)

TM, I would be more worried about the tornados; they are the unknown in this whole equation. How is the food holding out?? The tequila??? Any winds yet???

Turkey is smelling GREAT, chicken n dumplings are done.....PLENTY of tequila!

The winds are picking up, probably 20mph right now and it's getting cloudy
Since Rita tracked right we are said to expect sustained 70-80mph winds for 12-16 hours....

That damn turkey better be finished by the time the power goes....or I'll be lighting the pit in 70mph winds!

The property is next door to my friend's family home.....different owner. And talk about a windfall, FEMA is paying way above market value for the property. Others in the area tried to purchase the property to stop this from happening, but no one can match FEMA's price.

I think concerns include moving a very large population of poverty stricken people into an area which already has a high percentage of poverty, how the local schools (none too high up on the performance scale) can deal with the large number of children, and the aquifer located nearby is one that delivers water to a large area in Louisiana--do we really need 200 septic tanks being built right over our drinking water?

Exactly!! Of course any decrease is good but it is still going to be devasting.

Rita Slowly Weakens to Category 3 Storm

HOUSTON - A slowly weakening Hurricane Rita steamed toward the Texas and Louisiana coast with 125 mph winds Friday, taking direct aim at the nation's oil-refining industry. "We're going to get through this," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said. "Say a prayer for Texas." Rita weakened during the day to a Category 3 hurricane, down from a fearsome Category 5 with 175 mph winds on Wednesday. It was expected to come ashore early Saturday along the upper Texas-Louisiana coast on a course that could spare Houston and nearby Galveston a direct hit. But it could plow instead into the oil and chemical centers of Beaumont and Port Arthur, about 75 miles east of Houston.

Texas' emergency management coordinator, Jack Colley, predicted Rita would destroy nearly 5,700 homes in the state and cause $8.2 billion in damage.
