LAKE CHARLES, La. (CNN) -- As Category-3 Hurricane Rita battered the Louisiana coast early Saturday, reports of damage were almost immediate in Lake Charles, La., a city of about 72,000 people about 50 miles northeast of the Sabine Pass, on the border of Texas and Louisiana, where the storm made landfall.

"What we're experiencing now is what people were afraid of," said CNN's Jason Carroll in a Lake Charles hospital, describing the conditions as "very intense. The debris flying in every direction, we've seen transformers blow, we've seen trees toppling over."

"The weather is deteriorating quickly," said Sgt. Joey Fontenot of the sheriff's office in Calcasieu Parish, which includes Lake Charles. "We've got a lot of damage. We're unable to get out of our building."

A woman, eight months pregnant, and her 4-year-old son were rescued Friday from their damaged Port Fourchon, La., home as Hurricane Rita approached.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it was their first Rita-related rescue. An air crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans lowered a rescue swimmer from a helicopter and hoisted the mother and son to safety.

In Dulac, La., an Army National Guard ground unit rescued a family after they were spotted by a Coast Guard air crew.

She is now inland..... we are seeing the outlying clouds and some light wind..constant ...

later today into tonight and tomorrow we will continue to experience the heavier winds, and begin to get rain and thunderstorms...

Gabs, you'll be lucky if you get rain! My family in Bryan/CS plan to water their yard!!!! The winds haven't been bad at all either....

All those people who evacuated to Lufkin/Tyler area :( What's going to happen when all the people attempt to get home?? Gas is a problem for sure! I'm so thankful Houston/Galveston was spared, but pray for the areas it hits.

Hubby called this morning and they are all ok! Cell lines cutting out so he will call me later after he gets back out to sea. Yes!

Some things about hurricane effects are becoming predictable:

Hospital pharmacies were broken into by looters, to steal the drugs.
Cars being stolen from Dealerships.

We can make a list.

Rita sends residents to the roof

'Hundreds' saved in coastal Lousiana; Lake Charles under curfew

Lake Charles,La. - Some residents in Louisiana towns near the Texas border who holed up at their homes as Hurrican Rita blew threw are sitting on their shingles, awaiting rides from boats plying city streets.

Rescuers have saved a couple of hundred people in Abbeville and parts of Vermillion Parish are under 8 to 10 feet of water after Rita pushed the Gulf of Mexico several miles inward.

Just heard on FOX news that there is a possibility that Rita might go back into the gulf. Can it rebuild again? They will be watching it.

I had just looked at that. Right now the prediction shows Rita stalling out over Northern Mississippi. The heavy rains could still cause lots of flooding.

OMG! Am I seeing this right? If Rita does that- she will be hitting on the same area that Katrina hit!

Buzz, do you know what storms have gone back over the water and rebuilt? I know that there have been some(several) that have crossed Florida, then entered the Gulf(like Katrina) and made landfall again but I wonder if there are any that have followed a path simular to what that picture show Rita maybe doing. If so, did they get strong enough to worry about again? Wow, that sounds like a homework assignment, sorry, I'm just curious.

Andrew did this over Florida and rebuilt to hit Louisiana in 1992.

Yeh, there have been several that have crossed Florida then went in the gulf and made a 2nd landfall. I was curious as to what storms have made a turn like they are thinking that Rita might. The forecaster just mentioned Ivan. Looking for that track now...

Rita will need to have steering currents to get back to the Gulf, so we will just need to keep watching the predictions. From the chart, Rita won't move much between Monday and Thursday. Let's see what develops. The links for the charts automatically update, so keep an eye on them.
