I wonder if the detective dismissed you since you were supposedly 'given up' in California. I think it's still worth looking into.

Have you contacted The Charley Project? Surely they would DNA test you?

Obituary for Elizabeth Ann "Sissy" Turek Vasser has a newspaper clipping with the names of various relatives, all in Nashville.

When/if LEis not placing importance on your possible connection or not getting back to you for whatever reason, you need to be proactive . DNA is science, and you need to get your DNA into Ancestry and start looking for relatives there.

Please reachout to me Via DM if you ever see this - I sent you one. I think my comment was removed but I am Cheri's first cousin. I left all my contact info for you. Everyone in this obit minus my dad has passed already

My original suggestion to jusslikeme remains the same ... they need to register with one of the ancestry sites, i.e. AncestryDNA or 23andMe. Even if everyone in the obituary is deceased, surely one or more of them have offspring / relatives and that is how matches are made through DNA.

As a family member, please apply for verification so our members can be assured that they are receiving information from a legitimate relative of Cheri's.

For information on why Websleuths has this process in place, and how to apply, please click HERE.

Sadly to me it seems obvious that Cheri and Elizabeth were killed by Larry.

Missing But Not Forgotten 1980's
Cherie Nicole Barnes, 3, St Louis, 7 Jan 1987

go to Cherie's file; they were questioning DNA of remains found.
As a first cousin of Cherie's you can certainly prove who the child is or is not.

EDIT to add / from the article:
In a December 22, 2003 report addressed to Gerald Nance of NCMEC, Dr. Hunt stated that the analysis did not exclude the remains as being that of missing toddler Cherie Barnes. Although there was some lack of consistency between the photo of Cherie Barnes and the remains found, the inconsistency could easily be explained as a factor of possible photographic distortion based on the camera position to the child’s face in the photograph in contrast to the plane position of the skull for overlay.

Furthermore, horizontal lines were placed through the eyes to orient the position of the photograph to the skull. Horizontal lines were also used in the location of the mouth, occlusal line of the teeth, and the nasal aperture to correlate the features in the photograph of Cherie Barnes to that of the skull remains. All points of reference that were evaluated were within close proximity and were considered consistent.

In other words, the remains found in the blue suitcase at Skaggs Creek in Barren County are presumptively identified as missing toddler Cherie Barnes. However, without DNA confirmation at that time, it could not be determined without a doubt.
