Des Moines police seek help finding missing 6-year-old girl

Des Moines police are seeking the public's assistance in finding a child who went missing on Thursday.

Audrey Cooper is a 6-year-old black girl from Des Moines.

A missing Des Moines girl has been found safe in Michigan and her mother is in custody.

Audrey Cooper went missing on Feb. 23. Investigators thought the 6-year-old's mother, Tanya Kephart, picked her up from daycare, violating a court order.


The two were found in Menominee, Michigan. Police said Kephart came to a DHS office looking for financial aid. DHS called the police. After Kephart was taken into custody, she shared Cooper's location.


Cooper was found without incident. She is currently in foster care while arrangements are made to return her home.


Kephart is expected to be extradited to Iowa. She's expected to face charges of child endangerment and violation of a custodial order
