I think that a good start would be reform of existing laws, so that the people who get on the sex offender list for urination in public and other such offences are no longer there.

Weed out the RSO list so that it really means something.

Maybe we need a Registered Idiotic Conduct list instead?

I know that sex crimes, especially those in which children are the victims, are often "resolved" by allowing the perp to plead down to a lesser charge...something like indecent exposure or possibly public urination. This is a travesty of justice, but it happens a lot. A DA is going to look at a case of a pervert exposing himself or masturbating in public, or even if he observed getting naked with a child and think " how can I prove this and get a conviction?". If the perp claims he was simply urinating, even if this is a ridiculous excuse, a DA might chose to accept that plea instead of risking a jury not believing a victim or witness.

I would never trust a thing an RSO says. Someone who did plea down to public urination is always going to claim that's all he did to get on the list.

I say anyone who pulls it out in public for any reason isn't to be trusted. Let the men find a bathroom, just like the women do...they can wait!

I use to think my kids were better off riding their bikes then walking. But i see now this is not true. Any new info on the girls? Alot has changed around my house since i have been reading these cases. No toys allowed out front. Kids can't ride their bikes up and down our street , even in my eyes view and every bedroom has been painted white. No colours to indicate a girl or boys room. No colour curtains anymore. Sad but it has to be this way in this day and age.

First off, I'm not picking one you, I've seen lots of posts like this.

How do you let your children play outside if you are so consumed with fear that you paint your house white and don't have colored curtains for your children? Why do you let your fear control every aspect of your life? There are other ways to protect your children than trying to hide their existence. I can't imagine raising my children in such fear.

Wouldn't it be easier to buy an alarm system, take precautions to avoid being an easy target? If you are in a dangerous area, move?

We have a bunch of toys out front of our house. The kids rooms are painted pink and blue with beautiful curtains to match. But we are extremely vigilant in how we live. We knew before we started house shopping that we did not want a house with kids rooms on the main level, we knew we did not want kids rooms that would be first point of contact. We refuse to live somewhere that our kids can't play outside and be kids.

HI! I haven't posted much. (I'm shy!) Anyways, I'm ten pages behind but had to post. Last night was the 2nd night I've had dreams about these girls. Last night it was me going through the woods of Ohio with my mom. I live in Florida.

What a sad story. I've wanted to think positive but the more time that passes the more I question everything. I'm holding onto hope.

I also wanted to add that now I get the whole addiction/neglect thing. My other half already knows my routine and just chalks it up to..."are you sleuthing again?" It's a fine balance of paying attention to her and feedeing this fire inside.

By nature I am curious and by trade, in my industry had to "find people." Now it's carried over to this.

I hope we hear something BIG, DIRECT, & POSITIVE today. The little faces on these girls breaks my heart.

Oh gosh, I do! I remember this little booklet with drawings, entitled "Don't Go with Strangers", or something like that. I can't remember the story exactly, but it told about a couple of kids who were approached by a stranger. One child went with the stranger while the other refused. I don't recall all of the events, but it ended with the abducted child returning eventually with his nose bleeding. That scared the heck out of me!!!

35 or 40 years later, I can still see that drawing of the little kid with the bloody nose in my mind and it still gives me the same sick feeling it gave me when I was little. :(

Oh, I remember that book! That was also when McGruff the crime dog was introduced in schools.

I think the absolute best program was the DARE program to teach school aged children the cause and effect of drug use. Each school had an Officer Dare. Of course they cut that program a few years ago because of budget cuts. (this is all In Iowa).

Also, because of all the abduction attempts here this summer the schools should have LE come in and talk to the kids, at least the elementary and middle school level. I want my girls to be safe, informed and aware of what can happen, but at the same time I don't want to scare them half to death either. Such a fine line there between informed and scared.

Includes video.
"Children in the Story County towns of Colo and Slater reported last week that they were approached by a man in a van. As a result, parents began taking precautions.

"I hardly ever let him outside now alone," said parent Andrea Blythe. "He'll go out to the back yard, but I'm always on his tail."

The FBI is still searching for two missing cousins in Evansdale. Some parents said they don't let their children run as freely as before.

This is an old article which has been posted here before, but I wanted to revisit it. It was two weeks ago when the FBI said they 'had evidence'. I'd think most anything which was sent to be analyzed should be back by now.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/07/21/12878820-fbi-missing-iowa-girls-believed-to-be-alive?lite

Investigators said Saturday they have evidence that leads them to believe two cousins who vanished last week are still alive.
FBI spokeswoman Sandy Breault said that authorities strongly believe 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins have not been killed.
She refused to say what led authorities to that conclusion, but told reporters that investigators are expanding their search beyond Iowa.

I just want to qualify something. I have witnessed 2 maybe 3 experiences.

We were on bikes, back road.

I'm thinking of a third. Back road on bikes. My son lagged behind. He screamed out to me, neighbor came out. Thank you neighbor from the bottom of my heart.

8/9 year old was possibly abducted on a back road.

Again, thanks to my vigilant neighbor who heard my son screaming that day.

Crying my eyes out right now.

Thank you HOWEVER...

Actually, it is fairly easy to over ride an alarm system... Just saying.

We have in the last 3 months in this county and the neighboring county had 8 murders,

Each one had alarm systems and dogs and lived in a gated community.
And nosy neighbors who didn't hear a thing...

We need better laws..:banghead:

Am I missing something, or has the family become very quiet in the past few days?

I think this older video states that there is evidence girls are alive and that someone has info.

Evidence could be physical (ie something to be forensically analysed) or anecdotal (witness statements or other leads which do not need to be sent to a lab). I wish we knew what kind of evidence led them to believe the girls are still alive. I also wish I knew how strong that evidence is. Evidence being simply evidence and not proof, knowing how credible or strong that evidence is would sure go a long way in helping many continue to hold out hope.

I am the one in fear not my kids. They are aware but have no idea why i painted the rooms white and changed the curtains. I let them have their sticker decals but i placed them as a border halfway down the wall so perps can't see its a kids room. We have locks on all windows and if the kids do open them, they can't open all the way as we have set that to happen. As for an alarm we are looking into one. My neighbour has one and is getting us the info. It may sound like fear. But really it is protecting my kids. IMO

Tmo, it is not over protective to not leave a FOUR year old unattended! It is common sense.

They feel someone out there has pertinent information about the girls where abouts. Hmm they also said this about the guy in the store and pic of his van. Do they still believe this and that the girls are alive? Makes me think this guy in the store was one of their leads to finding the girls.

Trying to catch up on here and am sad to see nothing big has happened yet. My heart breaks for these little girls and their families. The family has gotten quiet ... I hope they are not losing hope. It seems, to me, LE is doing everything they can and the public is still reporting suspicious people/vehicles. That's a good thing and I hope it all pans out!

Just read the story about the leads that discusses MK. I feel so bad for that guy! I don't ever remember reading/seeing news that focused so much on someone who actually, turns out, to be nothing in regards to the case. I've seen times when they said they were questioning someone who may have info or was a witness, but do they usually release identifying info? All this could ruin this poor guy's life if you think about it.

Grainne,
I just want to say THANK YOU on behalf of all the mommies having a bad day. Parenting is HARD sometimes. Sometimes people have special needs kids who don't behave in the same way average children do. It must be horrible to be judged by other people on a day like that.

Being a parent to a difficult kid taught me to be a better person.

I manage a flower shop. My Boss is electrician. Guess what, we have a white van........

2 guys drive around every day in white van, no biggie. :fence:

Put some decals on it. It helps advertise and it won't scare kids and parents so much. JMO

How can an alarm system be overridden? I am asking because I am very dependent on my alarm and my dogs. Also what kind of laws would be better. Are you talking about longer sentences? making sure perps don't walk. I agree with that totally. jmo
