This case is very confusing. Drowning seems the most likely scenario, and yet there are no shoes left behind, and no one saw them swimming.
if they were abducted, then how did the perp get them away from the trail?
Probably on their own two feet. A perp would only need to have one girl, say by the arm, to control both girls. An onlooker would assume the trio were two children, possibly in trouble, with a parent.
Why didn't anyone see them? There may not have been any witnesses or a witness may have accepted the scene as normal and filtered it out of their memory.
Both girls had "stranger danger" training but research (and countless TV shows) indicate that such training is often ineffective. Even adults are known to freeze up when accosted, let alone children.
There is also no way to know in advance what a given victim will do. I've seen so many families say "my loved one would have fought and screamed and made a huge fuss" but it turns out not to be so.
