... Was just a report on WMT 1:00 news, saying 'tests are still being conducted in the case and wont be released to protect the confidentiality of the case' ... 'no word on when the tests will be finished' ...

Question: Liz' cell phone. Was it always not working? Did it work and did
she use any time on Jul 13th, especially during the morning? When they
asked to go out for a bike ride had they already been in contact with
someone ? Were they out looking for someone? Maybe someone they
were supposed to meet? All arranged on the cell phone?

IIRC, Elizabeth's cellphone was functional ONLY for playing games.

So...we may be waiting awhile?

Potential DNA from this case has probably been processed because it is so high profile. However, the perp may have committed other sexual assaults and hasn't been caught yet because the rape kits from the other assaults have not yet been processed.

Having DNA alone won't solve any crime because the DNA has to be matched to the owner of said DNA. If this perp did leave his DNA on other sexual assault victims, that would give LE so much more evidence (geographic, victim profiles, methodology, etc).

Need a memory boost! Did LE ever ask to talk to anyone that was at the lake that day...before 4PM? TIA

LE asked, in general, for anyone with information to come forward. I assume that would include anyone who had been at the lake that day, even if all they could provide is that they didn't see anything.

I don't know if LE ever issued a request specifically asking anyone who was at the lake that day to come forward.

ETA: Anyone having information on the whereabouts of these two missing girls or having seen these two girls after 12:15 p.m. Friday is asked to call the Evansdale Police Department at 319-232-6682.

The paddle boater...???? Other than that, I think they basically said "anyone who has any knowledge of anything that happened on July 13th" and that sort of thing.

But they did mention the paddle boater specifically in reference to the lake...the rest were areas outside of the immediate lake.

I'm uncomfortable with assuming this is a sexual crime, particularly in view of the "gender" reference by LE.

Not sure why, since I have no theory that I am married to, but I've never felt this was a sex crime either. I have nothing to base that on, no theory that makes me think that, but I just don't think it was a sex crime. I've always thought it was an execution.

I could be wrong, I'm wrong a lot.

Rape kits cost about $1,000 to process. I imagine some are not processed because the victim decides not to prosecute.

Does anyone recall or have any thoughts as to why LE, in the early stages, were asking for the man with the white van to come forward? I remember he DID come forward and was thought to have no involvement. But what was suspicious about the white van at the time? Is it possible that we didn't see the whole clip of the girls on their bikes? Perhaps it was snipped, only showing the girls as they rode by the camera, and not a white van tailing them?

Sorry if this has already been answered. I think it was because of the recent rash of "attempted abductions" where white vans were involved. So they scanned the local surveillance tapes for white vans.

Me too.

But usually 1 + 1 = 2.

There are certain aspects of this investigation that have made up my mind from the very beginning (almost) and nothing so far has been inconsistent with that.

I'm impatient by nature, but I can be patient for this.

I think there will be arrests, I think they will happen soon, and I think this will be a groundbreaking case in a lot of ways.

Or, I could be totally wrong, and it could all fade away to nothing and remain unsolved. :(

Groundbreaking in what way, Sapphire? Legally? New forensic techniques? New dimensions of depravity?

Just curious...

I'm thinking the latter...also the actual scope of the crime and how many accomplices there are.

I believe there is a lot of guilty knowledge out there.

Maybe (hopefully) forensics, but I also hope LE will be breaking new ground in the scope and complexity of the investigation they are running. The more accomplices, the more complicated the investigation gets and I feel that they are piecing evidence together slowly and deliberately.

Does anyone else share the feeling they are directly teasing someone with what they say publicly? :waitasec:

Of if any of persons LE was interested in talking to didn't have DNA on file they could arrange for a sample to be left..and/or picked up somewhere.

BBM

I feel it's possible LE is doing that. Teasing someone or more than one person, IMO.

If there are multiple perps they could be hoping the one will turn themselves in and give up the others. Bargaining could help their sentence, they could claim to only be the driver.

If a victim tells the prosecutor that they have re-considered testifying, the rape kit is taken out of the queue.

Also, in theory, it isn't up to the victim to prosecute. The state is party bringing the charges and the prosecutor is the representative of the state. In real life, many (not all) rape cases are impossible to prosecute without the victim's testimony. But all the victim is in control of is whether they testify or not; and even then, in theory, the prosecutor could subpoena the victim to force their testimony.

I know it happens, absolutely.

I just can't see it in this case, also because two girls were taken. Two tends to argue away from a random sexual perp...they may confront two kids but would almost always only take one. Statistically speaking, that is.

The email came after I went and personally talked to him about helping with all the accusations online about my dad. He was never short with me, he actually gave me all the time I needed to discuss it, he mentioned timing can be off for so many reasons, from a person remembering a tv show being on at that time, or a videos time being off, he says there could be many reasons.

Did you get the impresssion that police are also seeing problems with the timeline?

  • #1,179
Yup.

I don't think anything went horribly wrong though.

I think it all went perfectly according to plan.

I can see other motives too, like revenge, spite, convenience, and just plain meanness.

I agree, everything went horribly right for whomever did this. Definitely have been thinking about other motives. From reading here and following this case, is it possible someone overdosed and died from a batch of crank that Dan had manufactured and that person's relative was so angry they took the girls and killed them?

I agree about the just plain meanness too.

If there is more than one perp, I definitely think whoever turns himself/herself in first will be able to bargain for a lesser sentence, especially if they aren't the actual abductor/killer.
